Arizona brushes up image of outdated bird
    Bob Baum / Associated Press

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - The Arizona Cardinals have given their old bird a makeover.

The Cardinal head that has served as the team's logo since 1960 - when the franchise moved from Chicago to St. Louis - has been subtly transformed into a sleeker, meaner creature. The updated version was unveiled with great fanfare at Cardinals headquarters on Thursday.

"A tough bird," team owner Bill Bidwill said. "Hopefully it will be worn by tougher and faster and meaner players."

Yet to come is what Cardinals vice president Michael Bidwill called "a revolutionary" change in the team's uniforms, to be shown this spring.

Defensive end Bertrand Berry will wear the new logo on his helmet in next month's Pro Bowl.

The old Cardinal logo was a roundhead bird derisively referred to as a "parakeet." The new version has decidedly more evil eyes and a menacing expression.

"The outline is in black," Michael Bidwill said. "We've made the beak much more predatory and much more aggressive. The face is much more streamlined. It's faster looking. The eye has been described as mean, we'll say tough. We've taken tail feathers and given them speed, as well."

The new beak is gold, while the old one was yellow.

"As they say, it's not the size of the bird in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the bird," coach Dennis Green said. "The cardinal is a small bird, but it can be a very aggressive bird. That's the idea."

Several prominent Cardinals - including Josh McCown, Larry Fitzgerald and Leonard Davis - modeled apparel with the new logo.

With his rural Texas background, McCown was asked if he was something of an expert on birds.

"The only birds I know about are the duck and the dove and the quail, birds that you shoot," the Cardinals quarterback said. "You're not really supposed to shoot cardinals. I don't know if I'd shoot this bird. It looks pretty mean. This bird might pull a gun out and shoot right back at you."

The changes are part of the team's preparation for its move into a new stadium, set for completion by the 2006 season opener.
"See, BEFORE it was YELLOW ... but NOW, it's GOLD!"

Maybe now it speaks JAPANESE ANIME SPEAK, too

I love how they slanted its eyes. I know it was made to look meaner, but now it looks kind of drowsy. "Wake me on draft day."

But wouldn't that mean that the family Bidwell would actually have to spend money on tougher and faster and meaner players? The family history says they won't, and the new merchandise won't fly off the shelf unless they do.

Hey, it's the Arizona Cardinals! New look, same piss poor football!

In all fairness, though, I really hope the Cardinals start kicking major ass. The NFC West isn't all that tough a division, and as long as I can remember, they've sucked.

Not only was the logo change mocked locally, they stole the Coyote's slogan from last year when they changed their uniforms: "A New Breed", except now it is a Cardinal rather than a Coyote.

Why they decided to change the logo this year is also a mystery, since they don't move into their new stadium until NEXT year!

Another Bidwell marketing masterstroke!

When I read the headline for that story at ESPN, I thought to myself "wow, maybe they have some evil-looking cardinal with the wingspan of a hawk or something." ...

Hey, at least they're trying, I guess. Curious to see if they go the Bengals route with the new uniforms.

Could've been worse. They could've gone with Todd McFarlane's design...

Because this allows them to put the new logo in their under-construction stadium, without giving away the "secret" of it being the new logo.

I think that looks cool, in a USFL kind of way. But, I would think the black helmet would be a bit hot in the Arizona sun.

Well I guess that makes the Cards my early pick for the Superbowl next year

I'm really not getting the 'mean' vibe at all from that logo. Disgruntled possibly, and puzzled definately, but not mean.

They wouldn't be the first animal-based team to butch up their logo, though. Flipper just got meaner as the years went on. Still hasn't helped, though.

I'm kind of wondering if I should keep picking the Thursday game. I'm on a roll.
