What if they did this, NOT ONLY to make RAW look different from Smackdown....
but....
...and this is a stretch perhaps, though interesting enough to consider....
..What happens at Summerslam when Tazz & Cole come out to commentate? Are we going to have two teams competing to out-commentate the other? It's pretty ridiculous to think about, but why can't it happen? I can totally see it happening, if they keep up this rivalry between the shows until Summerslam (which can't be too hard). You just know that Tazz and Cole are going to be there.
It makes sense to me to have Cole/Tazz announce the Smackdown matches and JR/King announce the Raw matches. For JR/King to announce ALL the matches means they would've had to have been watching and keeping up with the "competition's" show and storylines. Seems like it would make perfect sense and go with the "competition" continuity to have them only announce the matches for "their" shows. That's actually what I thought they were going to do for Vengeance when Cole/Tazz came out. Maybe we'll eventually get to that point, or this will lead to seperate PPVs for just Raw or just Smackdown, which would also be a good idea. Raw and Smackdown alternate PPVs, which leads to more time between each show's PPVs and more build up. The shows should only come together for the "big 5" PPVs; Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, KOTR, SummerSlam, and Survivor Series. Again, that makes it more special when they actually do interact with each other and they can make it an even bigger deal when there's Raw v. Smackdown matches.
Well, there still is the plan to do more than 12 PPVs a year. This could all be a set up for that.

They tried something similar when they had "Crazy" JR setting up his own broadcast table when he was coming back from the Bell's Palsy. And one time Ross sat in the with Spanish Announcers.
First of all, that would only work if all the titles floated. Also, do Raw or SmackDown! have enough star power on their own to carry an entire 3 hour PPV?

This is the reason why they are forcing the roster split to become(be) successful. At the conference call that Linda McMahon held a few months back (before they lost the F), she said that if the split was 'successful', they would add one PPV per business quarter. (She also talked about Shane and Marissa Mazzola having a baby. That's why he's been gone for so long.)
But what you said made sense as it makes the split itself make sense.

If they wrote interesting TV and gave people reason to care about the mid-card then yes each show could support its own PPV. That was the initial purpose of the split.

The WWF/E hasn't written interesting mid-card feuds for years now. I can't see it happening anytime soon.
With the commentary table just off-ramp, it's too bad Nash isn't around...then Bischoff could get powerbombed off the entrance stage through a table again!
RAW is Great American Bash '96!
