Obviously, "Batman: The Animated Series" is a tough act to follow and even "The Batman" got pretty damn good towards the end. So a third animated interpretation within a 20-year span would be a little much.

Luckily, the team behind "Legion of Superheroes" apparently feels the same way, because a new Batman animated series has been announced and it looks to be something different.

Cartoon Network has announced Batman: The Brave and The Bold, a new animated series slated to debut in 2008.

The series will be set in a new continuity. Here's how the show is described:

"Batman isn't going at it alone this time! From Warner Bros. Animation comes the latest interpretation of the classic Batman franchise. Our caped crusader is teamed up with heroes from across the DC Universe, delivering nonstop action and adventure with a touch of comic relief. Blue Beetle, Green Arrow, Aquaman and countless others will get a chance to uphold justice alongside Batman. Though still based in Gotham, Batman will frequently find himself outside city limits, facing situations that are both unfamiliar and exhilarating. With formidable foes around every corner, Batman will still rely on his stealth, resourcefulness and limitless supply of cool gadgets to bring justice home."

The images within the link seem to indicate a somewhat campier tone and the animation style looks more like something out of "New Frontier".

The niece and nephew will definitely get a kick out of this one, so I'm looking forward to it on that end. In terms of more personal enjoyment, this could be INCREDIBLY cool depending on who they get as guest stars. Using the new Blue Beetle is a shocker, considering the character is so new and because the Blue Beetle license proved so elusive in the past (previous interviews revealed that the JLU team originally wanted Beetle for the Booster Gold episode to make it a team-up, but couldn't score the license). If that's any indication, this will be one to watch. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for an eventual Plastic Man guest spot.

Coming later this year. Huzzah!

I'm guessing that they're using the new Blue Beetle because there was some kind of problem with the Ted Kord version specifically that kept them from using the license. Good news for fans of the book though, because a tv spot can only raise the profile of the character. I'm not 100% on the art style based off those images, but I can totally get behind a Batman team-up show.

I hope we get new Four Horseman action figures from this show. Mattel is actually doing a really great job with DCU figures at the moment.

Seconded. I don't care much for cartoons, but made sure to watch BATMAN BEYOND whenever it was on.

I just wish it lasted longer than it did.

I never warmed to the new Batman show, mainly due to the character designs.

(Sort of the same with the LSH show, but it's the Legion!)

Brave and the Bold is a good idea for the premise of the show. It's also toyetic.

Speaking of toys, that new Super Powers esque line that Mattel showed off at Toy Fair looks fantastic.

DC Direct is now useless and pointless.

I think they're using the new one because he's completely awesome.

(and something about needing a gateway character the young kids can identify with.)

Batman The Animated Series is my favorite cartoon, ever. However, I think JLU is the best cartoon ever, if that makes sense. I also took a few seasons to warm up to The Batman, but really dug the last 3 seasons. That being said, I never truly warmed up to Beyond, but did like the Return of the Joker movie.
Can't wait for the new show, and will not rush to judgment before I see more of the art. The premise is great, though.

A Batman has been named. It's...Diedrich Bader?

Somehow, Oswald from the "Drew Carey Show" doesn't strike me as the type to voice Batman. But then again, he did voice a kick ass barbarian not too long ago, so it could be cool.

Does this mean there will also be a character named Peter-Man?

He did play Korgoth the barbarian in Korgoth of Barbaria. He used a very low, deep voice for that character.
