A lot of the offseason talk (aside from the obvious) has been about the Lakers adding Payton and Malone and the ensuing roster upgrades that the Spurs, Kings, Mavs, and Wolves countered with. What about the Nets? Do they have a case by re-signing Kidd and adding Zo to an already loaded roster? Granted that they come from the JV Conference, but it seems like they're making moves with a championship in mind while the rest of their conference rivals seem to be aiming lower. Assuming the Nets widen the gap, post a respectable regular season record, and make it to the Finals again, how do you think they would fare in a potential matchup with any one of the Big 5?

I live halfway between Bawstin and Wustah and bleed Celtic green (once the Sox red and Pats blue run out), but I cannot fathom any team from the east coast winning the NBA Championship. It's great that New Jersey is making moves that will keep them on top of the east for quite some time, and they might even take the Finals to a Game 6 or 7, but they won't win. Lakers over Nets in 5, Nets don't even get to 90 points in LA.
Sometimes I ask myself why I watch WWE after all the crap it's given me. HLA, necro, HHH, and so on. And then it hits me. That one simple phrase that can be modified and used for anything that gets you down, yet makes you keep coming back.

Kenyon Martin is already bitching about his contract, Kidd and Jefferson are on the Olympic qualifying team; meaning they have to play extra minutes in a shortened summer, Mourning hasn't proven he can stay healthy the past few years, and Dikembe Mutombo has less mobility than a statue. Throw in 'Lord' Byron Scott being in the last year of his contract, and this team that went 49-33 in the regular season last year will probably be bumped in the second round. My favorite in the East (provided they change head coach by the All-Star break) would be the Pacers. And no, I can't see them doing anything in the Finals either.

Speaking of Kenyon, he will also be playing on the qualifying team with Kidd and RJ. Malone backed out due to his mom's death. As for the Pacers, yeah if they had a real coach they would probably win the east but as of now NJ still has to be the favorite.

But it's likely they've lost it with K-Mart, they'll throw Byron Scott out for someone with a genius rep, Zo's kidneys are always a concern...
And heck, the West teams might just lose it facing each other, not likely, but still possible. |
