This thread is started because the Pieman was wondering what he would lose in switching from Netflix to Prime, but I thought a discussion of the various streaming services might be helpful
I have Prime and Netflix. Prime I got because I order a crapload of stuff from Amazon and that's two day shipping for free. Plus you get Prime. Netflix, at least originally because, well, it was Netflix.
I watch 'em both, but there is a lot of similar content - most movies are on both as a rule. There are a few differences but not major. House of Cards and Orange is the new Black and Lilyhammer are only on Netflix.
But then again, Prime has a million old westerns, which I love, all the HBO stuff (currently) and cycles stuff in and out all the time. I think it is better right now.
Hulu's more of a TV shows right now thing.
Help the Pieman
We'll be back right after order has been restored here in the Omni Center.

We are paying for all of them AND WWE Network AND Warner Archive. At this point, I have no idea why I'm still even paying for cable except it gets me a bundle price for the broadband delivering all these services to us. If ANYBODY would offer fiber to my home, I'd drop Comcast in a microsecond.
Except for WWE Network, I personally don't actually use any of these things although I get to take advantage of the Amazon Prime shipping deal. I think the only thing I've ever WATCHED on Amazon Prime was the Zombieland pilot.
Some day I'll watch that season of "Arrested Development" - it's only been a year, right? I'd also like to watch "House of Cards" but only after I've watched the ORIGINAL "House of Cards" and God knows when that'll ever happen.
Hulu Plus has selections from The Criterion Collection; I reckon that's probably why we haven't dropped it. I would never watch a TV show on Hulu because I have a strong aversion to them showing me ads.
I usually can't get on Netflix at home when I want to watch it because two of the kids are already using the service. I haven't watched any of their original series but it is the first place we look for Family movie night.
I get Amazon Prime because we order a ton of stuff from Amazon and Instant Video came with it. I am slowly going through JUSTIFIED on it right now and it will be my go to this summer for my workouts since Prime comes in better on the basement TV.
I forgot we had Hulu Plus. I think I should go cancel that one. I don't think the kids will notice.
Netflix/Hulu is what we have. Its what came with the Blu Ray. Hulu's next day service is nice to keep current and Netflix is good for watching new and old movies and TV. We dumped cable.
We also have all three (plus MLB.TV and HBO Go) - and of those, we use Hulu the least. And I always tell myself I'm going to watch films from the Criterion Collection on Hulu Plus - but I don't.
I would also cut the cord in a heartbeat, but like CRZ, I think the bundle price with Fios is just enough to keep us paying for the TV. And if Aereo wins their Supreme Court case, we just might out of spite (although we probably watch HBO more than any other channel, so I'm beginning to realize I might not be the one to ask...).
Personally, I wouldn't drop Netflix. Pick up Prime for a year and see how it goes (it's not *THAT* much, and the free shipping is REALLY nice).
We use all three as well. If you purchase a lot from Amazon, the Prime membership is worth it for free 2-day shipping alone, without getting into Instant Video offerings.
For TV shows alone, I'd call it a wash between Netflix and Amazon, but the movies for Netflix give me a lot more of what I'd watch (and browsing is easier on Netflix).
I can't even tell you the last time I've used our Hulu Plus account. I REALLY don't like it unless I have to find something for NBC that I can't find anywhere else. And usually it's old SNL clips they either don't have or their search feature sucks so bad, it's impossible to find. Yes, I have a little bitterness towards Hulu.
If you had to choose one, I'd choose Netflix. But if you REALLY use Amazon to shop (and we do... A LOT), I'd go with a Prime membership.
I use Hulu Plus for the streaming to my phone, mostly to watch Colbert and the Daily Show all over the house. (That said, they now have that Comedy Central app, making this an unnecessary expense.) I also like the Parks and Rec directors cuts and I don't think any other service has Modern Family on demand.
We have Amazon Prime and have used it maybe three times.
Most of what we watch is available On Demand through Comcast. If we're stuck (over)paying for their services, we might as well use them.
So after writing the above, it looks like we're dropping Hulu for Netflix so we can get Orange is the New Black season 2. Maybe we'll switch back once the tv season picks up again in the fall.
I have both and prefer Netflix more for content and service, but Amazon Prime has a deep library also and I agree that if you use Amazon for shipping a lot, it's a great deal.
But, I'm really starting to get into House of Cards and am a fan of what Netflix is doing as far as creating original content. That's really making it worth my while.
We only have Netflix. Use it all the time. Was home with a sick kid yesterday and got to mess around with the new Roku I got a couple weeks ago, and was surprised at how much was available on that thing. I use Hulu occasionally, ( I really like the next day availability of some shows), but REALLY don't like watching their ads. I did the one week free Hulu Plus thingy a year ago and wasn't impressed with a lot of what I saw. Thanks to http://us.whatsnewonnetflix.com/ , I am constantly updating our streaming que. The last couple of weeks, they hadve added quite a few new movies that are REALLY interesting. (PLEASE watch Rapture-Palooza when you get a chance!) My wife even mentioned that to me last night. Between the two Roku's, Xbox 360 and Wii, we have almost every room covered for Netflix. I can't wait for them to up the amount of devices that can be used at one time on your account.
I'm just rambling. This wasn't for pie's benefit. He never listens to me.
I'm a Netflix only user here. Other than sporting events (and wrestling if that isn't a "sporting event") I pretty much only watch Netflix. I don't even watch current TV shows. I just wait until they are on Netflix and if they never make it to Netflix I probably never see it.
I know there are a lot of Netflix haters out there because they don't have new releases. I can understand that and there's nothing wrong with prefering that type of movie but I like lots of other stuff. Old movies, foreign movies, etc. So I never have a problem finding anything to watch. Sometimes I even use the Netflix Roulette app to pick a random movie.
I do like big budget new releases but I usually see the ones I want to see at the theater.
Ooooh, that's good. I've been using Instantwatcher which tracks the most popular 100 streamable titles in the past 24 hours.
Yeah, I had been using instantwatch until I found this one. I still check in occasionally to see what's being streamed by others and every once in a while find something I missed.
I have Netflix and am using it to binge watch old shows or to just watch stuff I've never seen. I do like their feature where you can rate things you've seen and they recommend films/tv shows for you. It's much better than "Since you watched Parks n Rec, you should watch ___________" line of shows they put in your browse feature.
I only watch Hulu in the unpaid format. I don't have the desire to get a DVR to watch the shows that I enjoy on my own schedule, so I'll catch them on here.
I want to get Amazon, if only for the FX shows and the HBO shows that are coming online soon, but I'm too cheap to pop a hundred bucks at once.

all the ones marked Prime are. One of my favorite features of Amazon is after all the prime stuff, I can also rent a just released movie, which is usually 5 bucks or less for 24 hours and it gets charged to my cash back credit card. And I don't have to leave the house and go down to the Redbox to get it.
so, like, if I have "just netflix" then I have to have either my cable's on demand, or go down to the redbox for a new movie, but with Amazon I don't.

Hulu+ is fantastic for WWE content and anime, and the Criterion collection is nothing to sneeze at. The ads on TV can get annoying, especially around election season, but since we dropped cable I consider it a fair trade-off to be able to watch current episodes of TV shows we like.
We only do Hulu Plus (half of "we" also do WWE Network, but I digress...). Primarily we watch TV shows - many of them "Hulu Originals" or whatever they call them. The movies aren't very impressive, but are better than nothing.
