So, Mrs. gater and I are having a son in July and I've been tasked with finding a nanny. I'm doing my due diligence and proper web searches, but thought I'd cover all bases. We'll be (hopefully) using a in-house nanny (our house) as we both work. We also have a dog, so this may be difficult.

I'm just wondering if there are any good information banks out there [my wife used theknot.com religiously in planning our wedding]. That any of you may have used.

Just a shot in the dark, because every once in a while a nugget of useful information slips free from these boards.

Thanks!

A good friend of mine has used au pair students, six months at a time, and has found it to be very economical.

Congrats and Good Luck with the new addition!

I would SERIOUSLY ask you to at least consider some sort of group daycare-type of thing, as opposed to a nanny, at least part-time. Izzy Jo is almost 2 1/2, and she's gone to KinderCare since she was 11 months old or so. The social development she shows compared to other kids of our friends who weren't put in with other like-aged kids is amazing. We've got one friend with a 3 1/2 year old boy who is drives us CRAZY, he barely talks, he's extremely shy, and still wears diapers (!), compared to Isabelle who's a whirling dervish by comparison. Izzy Jo has friends at "school" she talks about and they're all kind of going through potty-training together. It's awesome.

The only negative thing (which isn't really that big of a deal and has actually been useful for getting lessons across) is that when one kid develops a bad habit (like spitting) they all do it until they all stop. Most all of the kids in her class are have good vocabulary skills and seem to be able to deal with a group environment better than the stay-at-home kids we know, and even if Mrs. JJD could suddenly stay at home full-time we'd absolutely keep putting Izzy Jo into a daycare-type of thing a couple of days per week.

No worries, JJD - I feel the exact same way as you. Believe me - that's the plan. Probably around the same time: 10-12 months. But for the better part of the 1st year, there isn't *much* social interaction going on. Our kid will have plenty of people fawning all over him during those 10 months and planting 2 newborns next to each other doesn't really accomplish much.

This is just more of a convenience thing for 10 months. We get a little extra time (as opposed to getting up early packing up the kid, etc.) while it makes sense. Baby gater will certainly be heading to KinderCare at an early age, but at least through the winter, this will probably make more sense.

EDIT - by the way, JJD - just checked you avatar. Amazing, you managed a really cute kid! Must take after Mrs. JJD.

I would recommend using a local agency to find a nanny. They'll do background checks, require training/continuing education type stuff, get references, and you can interview prospective nannies (obviously). It'll require more cash than finding someone on your own, but I think it's best since they have the experience and resources to investigate prospective nannies more thoroughly. Besides, if someone isn't working out, you can just tell the agency, and they'll find someone else. Just be sure to do your homework on the agency.

As far as an au pair, I have heard very good things about Cultural Au Pair but have no personal experience with them.

If there is any sort of state regulation or examination procedure for child care providers or agencies, check that out (there is here in Texas, but I don't know about Illinois). And, obviously, ask around to see which agencies other people have used.

I second what JJD says. Even above the social skills, my daughter just loves going to 'school.' Doesn't reflect on me, does it? Right?!?

Lastly, when you do look for a day care center, consider local churches. The only drawback would be if you're not a religious person and have a problem with religion because the child will be reading Bible stories and receiving religious education. But, I think the benefits are numerous. Even though we're not Baptist, we use a local Baptist church and absolutely could not be happier, especially with the employees and the child:teacher ratio.

If a local college in your area has an ECE (Early Childhood Education) or nursing program, perhaps they could be of some benefit? You could talk to them about having a student help out or whatnot.

Load the little bugger up with some benadryl and leave him in the crib with a bottle of formula.

Just kidding. I would go with an Au Pair, if you can afford to house one. Every person I know who has had one was delighted with the experience, plus, every one I knew was usually a smoking hot chick from Sweden or Norway, so you have THAT going for you.

Give us a heads up if you are going to mention this as a solid reason to Mrs. Gater, who is in her third trimester. I'm guessing her reaction will make the evening news and will probably set some type of record for bloodiest and most painful homicide in history. And, no court in the world would convict her.

Thanks all for the advice. Everything has been thrown into the mixing pot. Au pair sounds great, but we barely have room for the little bugger himself much less a member of the Swedish bikini team.

Corajudo - I did mention StaggerLee's suggestion in my sue diligence report to Mrs. Gater. She continue's to amaze me as one of the coolest wives ever with her reply, "Well, there won't be much room in the bed for the dog with the three of us sleeping there." Although to be honest, I think it was more of a comment on how little room we have more than anything...
