This goes out to Guru Zim, or any others who wish to respond.
My Dell with Windows ME is just about finished. I'd like to know what you'd recommend as a replacement. A while ago I had posted about upgrading, and you(Guru) had suggested a tower from Dell that was pretty cheap. I appreciate any input,.

Monsoon: Ted Arcidi's gonna drop by.

Sterling, if you're in the States, you could try one of Dell's N-Series desktops. Usually for business and coperations, they don't come with an OS, thus you can knock off at least 100 bucks off the price. A great idea if you have access to a legal copy of an OS (such as MSDN) or if you're using Linux.

Otherwise, you can pick up a Dimension C521 for $359 or a Dimension E520 for $389. I'd get the E520, because it has a larger chassis plus you get the Celeron D, which is a very good processer for a low end version. So essentially for 389, you get;

PROCESSOR: Celeron D® Processor 336 (2.80, 533 FSB)
OPERATING SYSTEM: Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Basic edit
MEMORY: 512MB Single Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz - 1DIMM
HARD DRIVE 80GB: Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16X DVD ROM Drive
VIDEO CARD: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3000
SOUND: Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio (likely Sigmatel).

El Nastio is employed by Dell as far as I recall, so he probablyl knows his stuff.

I usually go through a Deal site to get these - I'll double post if I can find something.

Try here:

http://www.gotapex.com/

The special today has a Pentium D processor and a 22" widescreen LCD deal for under $700. Read through the site, there are all sorts of deals there.

You're right Guru, I do work for Dell (tech support). Goes without saying I know a lot about Dell's products and services, but I know a bit more about computers in general than I used to,

At dell.com, you can land a E520. You get;

PROCESSOR Pentium® D Processor 915 with Dual Core Technology (2.8GHz, 800FSB).....same as the one on the site.

OPERATING SYSTEM FREE Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium w/1GB memory. Better than the one at the site.

MEMORY 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz- 2DIMMs. Twice as much.

HARD DRIVE 160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM). Also twice as much.

OPTICAL DRIVE 48X CD-RW/ DVD Combo Drive. Same.

MONITOR 19 inch E197FP Analog Flat Panel. Worse than the one the site is offering.

VIDEO CARD Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3000. Also worse.

SOUND Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio (once again, likely sigmatel). Probably about the same.

For $679 you get a smaller monitor and worse video card....but a hard drive twice as big, a better version of Vista, and 1 gig of RAM. They're both pretty good deals.

Be careful with their warranty though....find out if it's through the website or through Dell directly. Through Dell directly is probably perfered, as you can cut out the middle man.

That's a nice site Guru. I'll have to go through there more often.

Those are all coupon deals through Dell. You are buying from Dell but with a coupon special.

I'd go widescreen over the 19" and the Vista difference - you'd have to really sell on how that's an upgrade

I wouldn't buy a Pentium D again - I have an E510 w/ and 820 Pentium D and it is loud and power hungry. Core2 Duo chips are a better deal all around.

Anyway the deals at Got Apex change daily so shop for a bit. You will almost always see the best deal on GotApex from the home or small business site, sometimes with coupons as well. I usually get better prices through that than I do from my Dell EPP deal.

Check at work to see if you do have an EPP deal - they vary from employer to employer based on the volume your company does with Dell. I'm the administrator for my plan at work and I'm usually not too impressed with the deals but sometimes you can get a steal.

It's too bad you couldn't have gotten a new PC before Vista came out.

I'm starting to be thankful I did, my Vista disc is somewhere in the mail, and I'm still debating on how soon I wanna even think about upgrading to it.

Actually I don't even know how to type it into the header manually if I wanted to do that. When I try, it types the same thing into every page and I can't edit individual page headers.
