Adding Boise State and Colorado for football and Kansas for hoops would be a pretty nice coup for the MWC.

Which would make the MWC a BCS conference...which is something they've been driving at for a long time.

So it does look like this will all go down, with Nebraska and Colorado leaving and everyone following. The end of the Big 12 more or less. Shame, I'd rather they not blow it all up, but we'll see what happens. Missouri has to be nervous without that Big 10 invite right now.

Somewhat related, the word from folks at USC is 2 year bowl ban, 30 scholarships over three years and vacated wins. Something about the Bush situation not even being the real reason for the punishment. What an insane week.

The bowl ban hurts USC, but if they lose 30 scholarships that is long term damage. Only person who didn't realize that USC was screwed when Carroll jumped to USC was the half-wit who took the USC head coaching job.

Yeah that's a pretty harsh punishment, and well deserved. Kinda suprised if it's only three years of scholarship reductions though, even those that's a high number of 'ships. I'm guessing they want to really punish them, but not destroy them like they did to SMU.

Granted all this comes from USC fans who are hearing it from their insiders, so who knows how accurate it is. Basically they are being told basketball won't get hit much worse than the self imposed stuff, it's football the is going to be nailed hard.

According to the article Colorado already has the invite with Texas and five others getting a formal one at the end of the week or may already have it. I wonder who the Big 12 coach who said that Nebraska going was the beginning of the end of the Big 12? This weekend once Nebraska confirms they are leaving maybe the wildest weekend in NCAA football ever and its in June. Like I said earlier, I have no idea why you give Nebraska a choice much less an ultimatum to leave the Big 12. If its about money give them more or at least try to get a network deal. The Big 12's overconfidence seems to be their downfall, because I refuse to believe they are broke.

I've heard some people express the opinion that Texas is the one pulling strings behind the scenes. Texas gets the board to issue the ultimatum to Missouri and Nebraska, while at the same time Texas has been fielding their own calls from the Pac-10 and Big Ten. Nebraska gets blamed for the fall of the Big 12, and Texas orchestrates a sweetheart deal moving them and their traditional rivalries into the Pac-10.

What shocks me is how Chip Brown and the idiots at Orangebloods are the ones breaking all this. They just make crap up half the time in my experience with them.

Yeah, reminds me of when the fake Mitchell Report names came out two days before the real names. I guess we'll all know in a little while, and hopefully anyone who was wrong can be blacklisted. :-)

I don't have a link but just now on the Sportscenter between World Cup matches, they said that coming across the wire is breaking news that Boise State will be joining the Mountain West.

Is there that big of an upgrade from the WAC to the MWC?

I think it will be, assuming the Big 12 goes bye-bye, because the MWC supposedly steps in as a BCS conference. (But damned if I can find the thread on The-W when the methodology of determining BCS conferences was discussed; it was when there was talk that the Big East was going to be ranked too low to qualify.)

I agree ... MWC picks up the Big 12 scraps like Kansas, K St., etc ... before you know it, they'll be at 16 teams themselves.

And even if this is the only move the MWC makes, it is still a big upgrade for Boise.

Boise's (now ex-) WAC brethren: Fresno State, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Utah State.

Boise's (new) MWC brethren: Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV, Utah, Wyoming.

Just curious because I heard some talk about it on the radio yesterday... how does a school like Kansas with a perennial powerhouse program in basketball and pretty good football program end up as one of the "scraps" from the Big 12?

I mean, Texas would obviously influence other schools to join them in a move, Nebraska is obviously coveted by the Big 10 (and their b'ball program blows), but a school like Kansas, which would presumably bring a great athletic reputation, is left sucking wind on this whole deal. Anyone have an explanation? Just not a rabid fanbase that would travel to schools in other conferences?

EDIT: Nebraska to Big 10 official

It's been summarized as "football makes money, basketball doesn't".

Which is ironic because the MWC was formed because most of the WAC members bolted when they thought the WAC was too bloated when they expanded to 16.

Oh yes. Boise State Football has been the outright champions of the WAC for every year they've been in it, since 2001, except for 2005 when they shared it with Nevada and 2007 when Hawaii was the champ.

They have pretty much zero competition and I would compare it to Miami, FL or Florida State today slumming it in the Sun Belt. They are a very big fish in a small pond.

The MWC in football, since 2004, has been dominated by Utah, TCU, and BYU with each winning the conference three, two, and two times respectively.

Orangebloods.com is now reporting Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State are headed for the Pac-10.

If somehow Texas A&M talks their way out of the Pac-10, I would be thrilled with Kansas as the 16th Pac-10 team. They are a decent match-up with Colorado for football rivalry weekend and they would make the hoops league ridiculous.

EDIT:

Which is ironic because the MWC was formed because most of the WAC members bolted when they thought the WAC was too bloated when they expanded to 16.

It is, but that was due to the locations of the teams (the 16-team WAC spread from Lousiana to Hawaii), not really the number of teams.
