From Variety:

Variety.com - NBC pumps up for 'Gladiators' redo

NBC is getting into the ring with "American Gladiators," which has been revived by the Peacock for midseason.

The competition skein -- which featured players with names like Nitro, Turbo and Laser in its campy, early '90s syndie incarnation -- will be updated for the 21st century with new technology and twists. MGM TV, which was behind the original hit, is producing along with Reveille.

Peacock's interest in the revival actually predates the arrival of NBC Entertainment/Universal Media Studios co-chairman Ben Silverman, who began developing the project while still in charge of Reveille. Net confirmed last month that "Gladiator" was a priority at the net (Daily Variety, July 16).

I'm a HUGE Gladiators mark and if they can stay faithful to the spirit of the old shows, then I am all over it.

Of course, it'll be just weird to watch these shows without the presence of Mike Adamle. Maybe they can dust him out of mothballs.

Buy Kanye West's "Graduation" (The W at Amazon) and YOU can help send 50 Cent into retirement (and put some money into The W while you're at it)!

That was my line! -_-

But seeing as the last things he's done are Battle of the Network Reality Stars and bull riding, both of which NBC has stakes in, that's a distinct possibility.

I don't think Congress will subpoena their Wellness policy.

Or did you mean YOU were on steroids when you were watching the show? That's a lot better image, let's go with that.

He's not on staff, but he works as fill-in sports anchor for NBC in Chicago, doing Bears stuff if recall. He's definitely available.

I saw the thread title, and said to myself that the first post would start:

... as a reality show.

Because the original was as much a game show as any genre you could classify it into, no? Just because a repetitive pile of crap like "Deal or No Deal" could get decent ratings, I don't see this remotely working as a prime-time network show.

I was a fan of the original myself, but I just can't imagine what they could come up with to enough hook viewers from week to week to justify a network slot..

So long as it leads to an al-celebrity edition where Dane Cook blows out a knee in Breakthrough & Conquer, I'm for it.

Is Larry Czonka too old to do this? Maybe they can have Adamle and Rico Costantino in the booth.

Just for old time's sake, I hope Rico Constantino is part of this. Lace too. She was HOT. Probably not so much now.

Like TheOldMan said, it would really work as a reality but I would like a reality/competition like The Ultimate Fighter.

I would watch a build-up of 10 men and 10 women as they compete for the right to Challenge the gladiators on the show. Every week 2 men and 2 women would be eliminated after a series of competitions until the final 2 would battle it out.

I want to see Wesley "Two Scoops" Berry compete again just to have the crowd chant "TWO SCOOPS TWO SCOOPS TWO SCOOPS" constantly.

My two big memories of "American Gladiators" was that Nitro was my favorite gladiator and that he totally ruled......and that Malibu sucked so bad that I almost felt sorry for him.

Better yet, make HIM a Gladiator.

Cosigned on Malibu. I remember he got taken out during Human Cannonball and never appeared again.

The popular rumor on the internets about Wesley Berry is that he's in prison for armed robbery/conspiracy to commit/accomplice to/something lame like that. Of course, no one can really corroborate this with anything more than, "Yeah I want to high school with him and talk to him all the time, he's innocent y'all!!"

I loved this show, and I'd give any new iteration at least a tryout. However, there are only two episodes of American Gladiators I remember distinctly. And really, it was just two discrete events. One was when Wesley Berry jumped over a car The other was potentially the coolest thing I have ever seen done on live/live-to-tape television. I won't ruin the surprise for those unlucky few that have never seen it, just clicky the linky. It still gives me chills watching it. Kyler Storm, where are you now??

Oh, man...I'm all over this. I can't wait to see what comes of it. As long as it's not a "Become the next American Gladiator!!!" reality show...I mean, when was that show last on?

I caught a couple of episodes on ESPN Classic while on a road trip into Montana/Idaho this past weekend. Man, I loved that show. I remember really wanting to compete on it, just to go through The Eliminator at the end. Of course, now I think I'd probably break something trying to run up the downward conveyor belt.

I think what NBC will do with the show is highlight inspirational people and bring out the "human drama" rather than the athletic competition. Still, I hope the new wave of gladiators have the same competitive spirit that the originals did.

I remember going to see it person when they had local try-outs. A female body builder I worked with tried out and did an awesome job in the competition.

I also love the watching the old ones and anticipate enjoying the new ones, too.

Oh, hey everyone. Now comes word that Hulk Hogan is going to host.
http://www.tvweek.com/blogs/james-hibberd/2007/10/hulk_hogan_finalizing_deal_to.php

The article says that NBC thinks Hogan is the perfect fit.

On the bad side,
"The remake will add special effects, water skills and high-tech stunts."

Special effects? Boo! Hiss!

It looks somewhat underwhelming and dare I say...fetishistic. The S-shield should be more prominent. Routh just does not look impressive or like Superman should in costume.
