I don't particularly care about anything NBC did except... THEY PULLED COMMUNITY from mid-season! Sure, they replaced it with 30 Rock, but still!

I've got to say, I'm not surprised. Community is a quality show, but it seems far too insular to draw a huge audience.

Having said that, I will miss it tremendously every week.

"Whitney"'s gonna last a full season?

NBC says all 22 episodes will be shot and eventually aired, so that's way better than no more show. But it ends the weekly enjoyment to look forward to and means Thursday is no longer a powerhouse of laughs.

I thought the best potential outcome for the show considering the lay of the land would be four seasons to follow their four year Greendale experience. Looking like more of a longshot at this point.

From what I've read from elsewhere, people who do stick around (don't laugh) like the two leads. I find the show too comedically weak and stopped watching.

Prime Suspect, NBC's "big" drama, is also shelved for the time being.

I didn't expect Community to get the fabled six seasons and a movie, but someone at Sony (owners of the show) must be a bit deflated.

ETA: The only realistic hope NBC has is Mondays w/The Voice and Smash.

I'm wondering when "Whitney" will pull a negative rating.

I guess thanks to NBC for freeing up my Thursday viewing. Office and Parks will be the only shows I'll bother to watch.

I'm not happy about the lack of Community. I feel like now's the time to start some sort of Jericho-style nuts campaign (although outside of people bombarding every NBC.com twitter address with videos of them singing Kiss from a Rose, I can't think of what would be appropriate), before we get too close to any real threat of cancellation. (Maybe if we all sent Britta filters and bagels to 30 Rock? Shop at the Gap and send our receipts???)

That said, Up All Night should be a welcome addition to Thursday nights. Admittedly, I haven't watched it since the pilot, but, well, I will have an extra half hour going forward the rest of the season...

Edit: Is it at all possible that NBC knows that the Office is running out of steam and next year's line up should be P&R, Community, 30 Rock, and Up All Night, and they are just buying time?

Not really, if only because Whitney isn't included in your lineup.

Community is one of my favourite shows on television right now, and I was was angry at this news, until I read an article on macleans.ca. Which made some really good points about the fact that NBC ordered 22 episodes that they will have to air at some point, and they figure that will be once one of the new shows bombs. So I'm holding out hope!

I've calmed down a bit. I realize now that one show was always going to have to take a seat when 30 Rock came back.

As much as I would like it to be Whitney or Up All Night (and I like Up All Night), I figured it would be Community.

I am horrifically upset at the upcoming shortage of Alison Brie on my TV. Booo-urns.

I don't want to be mean about this, because I love Community too, but I wish the internet would've stop having a coronary every time a well regarded but low rated show gets moved around or put on hiatus. That's what people who run TV networks have done and will continue to do, and it was inevitable it was coming for Community this year with how they were doing.

We are very fortunate the standards of NBC have fallen so fast to allow this show last thru one paintball game; maybe we'd be on season 9 of Firefly if the bar was so low back then, but this has been happening for a long time. (The internet is a poorer place for not existing in this form when the original Star Trek series was canceled.) I would much rather the shows trade being mainstream for being excellent when that decision has to be made. But also I understand that trade off means this is the much more likely outcome - and I thought everyone had figured that out by now, but here we are.

I'm not saying don't be disappointed, but I am saying handle your disappointment less like a spoiled child. (In general, not referring to anyone in this thread.)

We are certainly now in a culture full of entitlement where people constantly complain when they do get what they want.

Community getting three years puts it ahead of things like the aforemntioned Firefly or Terriers or Brisco County, which got one season or less.

I wonder if it could find a home with a smaller budget on another channel, which would probably mean the loss of a cast member or two to save money.

I think it was the low standard of NBC that had people taking for granted the idea that the whole season would air as ordered. Thursday comedy being about the only thing going for the network had people complacent if not confident. If it had been on the bubble for renewal at s3 or s4 there would've been the usual "!!!save the show!!!" internet shenanigans, but losing half of what everyone thought they had coming, immediately, was the real kick in the pants on this one. If NBC would've worded their shit in a more PR friendly way, I think the outrage might've just amounted to a groan of entitlement.

I think that's what bugged me too. At no time was anyone actually reporting the show was canceled. It was just not on the mid-season schedule. Everyone was leaping to the conclusion the show was canceled because they're well aware that these shows get canceled, but they're shocked that it might be canceled.

This Daily Beast article on Community's situation (thedailybeast.com) is the best overall commentary I've seen.

According to THR.com it won't get the typical back-nine order... will go directly to Season 2. That is good for me, if this show ends up being good I can catch up easily. And according to zap2it the second season will be 13 episodes, too.
