I think the NBA is dead wrong to allow those who haven't won the trophy (or will NEVER win it, cough*Vlade*cough) to touch it and pose with it. Perhaps I'm too much of a purist, but the trophy belongs to the champions. Typical cheesy NBA marketing.

Kobe Bryant to the rescue.

The ORIGINAL song, "Let's Get Retarded" is available on their latest CD, Elephunk. I can't find this NBA-ized version of the song anywhere.
edit: If you have iTunes, here's the link to the original song (phobos.apple.com)
(link will probably only work if you've got iTunes installed)

I was gonna say the same thing...I've even heard retired players doing broadcasts (intermission studio guys, for example) say that they would refuse to touch the Cup since they'd never won it. I guess it's different for non-players, such as the Black Eyed Peas guy that someone talked about, since there was never an expectation that they could win it and thus it's not really sacred in the same way.
Then again, it's not really comparing the same things here...the Stanley Cup (not just winning the NHL) is the most prestigious, best known trophy in sports. In the NBA, the trophy itself doesn't carry the same influence or heritage. Does it even have a name?

From NBA.com:
The Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy
The Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy, hand-crafted in sterling silver with a 24 karat gold overlay, was designed and manufactured by Tiffany & Co.
The trophy, comprised of nearly sixteen pounds of sterling silver and vermeil (sterling silver with 24 karat gold overlay) and standing about two feet tall, is etched to resemble a basketball net. A single rod extends from the base to the ball, giving the appearance of a play in motion. The regulation size sterling silver and vermeil basketball rests along the rim of the net. The trophy is created each year in the Tiffany & Co. Silver Shop.
The NBA Championship Trophy was created in 1978 for the National Basketball Association and renamed in 1984 in honor of the late former NBA Commissioner Larry O'Brien. Larry O'Brien was commissioner of the league from 1975 to 1984 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in May 1991.

By "sports", I assume you mean "Canada". I'd bet you could find plenty of people here that would be able to identify the Vince Lombardi Trophy (and worldwide who could idenify the World Cup trophy) over Lord Stanley's Cup.

Unlike the Stanley Cup, the LOB Trophy doesn't get passed from team to team. You just *get* one. So that's why you see pictures of say, Tim Duncan, holding up two trophies after winning a title. From where I sit, is seems like the players are more about the ring than the trophy anyway.

After Britney and Christina, that ship has sailed. Also, if I told her she had a beautiful body, would she hold it against me?
Re: the Stanley Cup. It's the most important TROPHY in sports, since as it was mentioned earlier in the thread, other sports are all about 'the ring' as the symbol of victory. There's no better celebration in sports than seeing the members of the Cup-winning team do laps around the rink holding aloft. Two sports memories indelibly etched into my brain are Mark Messier's half-hysterical laugh of joy after the Rangers won the Cup in 1994 and Joe Sakic instantly passing the Cup off to first-time winner Ray Bourque in 2001. The other sports don't quite hold up.
* NBA: Jordan hugging the trophy for dear life after one of the Bulls' wins. * NFL: Reggie White running around the field holding the trophy after Green Bay wins in 1996. * MLB: George Costanza drives around the Yankee Stadium parking lot with the Commissioners' Trophy attached to the back of his car.
