Because I'm a geek (and have Wikipedia at my disposal, making me a geek with power,)

The 1969 Celtics/Lakers series was won 4-3 by Boston despite L.A. winning the first two games, both at home.

In 1977, the Philadelphia 76ers won Games 1 and 2 at home against the Portland Trail Blazers, only to lose the next four games.

    Honorable Mention:

The New York Knicks lost the first three games of the 1951 NBA Finals to the Rochester Royals before winning Games 4, 5 and 6 to tie the series. The Knicks were denied the championship in Game 7 by a 79-75 loss in Rochester.

And those series were before David Stern changed the rules from 2-2-1-1-1 to 2-3-2. If the Heat win their home games they do force Dallas to have to win twice while facing elimination.
Now, this might be a game early, but Shaq's legacy might be on the line now. He has his 3 titles, but, if the Heat go out with a whimper, this could be the 3rd time he's been swept in the Finals.

Second time, actually-- though it was called by many, including me, a "five-game sweep", the Lakers did manage to win one game against the Pistons in '04.

I think it does when the opposing team hasn't looked like winning and when for 1 of those games the home teams best player gave them squat. To me, that says the Heat have a LOT of work to do. I'd much rather see the Heat win, but I really think the Mavs should be almost unbackable favourites after those 2 games.

More than anything, returning to Miami should light a fire under Shaq. It should. It SHOULD! Because if it doesn't and he has another horrific performance like he did in Game 2, then the writing really will be on the wall. Everyone will remember the '06 Finals more for "The Fall of Shaq" than "The Rise of Dirk".

OK, I'll play the part of the Dallas Blowhard. For the Heat to win, they have to win 4 out of the next 5 games. That is just not going to happen. The Mavs did lose 4 out of 5 once during the regular season. But it is not, I repeat, not going to happen at this point in the finals.

I can see the Heat pulling out all of the stops and winning tonight (Tue), and maybe even get lucky in one two other games in Miami. But that is it.

Dallas, plan the parade for the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks. And be sure to catch the trophy presentation where David Stern gives the trophy to Mark Cuban. Should be gold. Cuban has stated that he will get naked to receive the trophy. Later he amended this to wearing a speedo. I doubt that either of these will happen, but there should be some good tension given their history.

OK, I had to look it up. And I still don't think Miami can win 4 out of 5.

Ironically, on a local sports talk radio station right now, they are lambasting the Dallas city council for already acknowledging the championship parade schedule. Thus jinxing the series.

Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow.

The Heat's season was dead with 7 minutes left in this game. Gone. Dead. Deceased. Muerte. Bagged and tagged. And then comes Dwyane Wade on one good leg to lead the charge and Gary Payton to make what I hope was a Dave Roberts-type play at the clutchiest of clutch moments to allow Miami to get back in this series.

I realize that in the end it's just a case of holding serve in a 7-game series, but Dallas was already celebrating in the 4th quarter and now rather than an impending sweep after taking the last bit of resolve from Miami, now they're very much alive again.

And now we go into a pivotal Game 5 with the series knotted, 2-2. Looks like the Mavs announcing their championship parade schedule was damn premature!

Don't think that this hasn't been a prime discussion point on talk radio today in Dallas. But I and JoshMann know that it is really all my fault.

Game 5 has just ended.

Josh Howard is an idiot. Welcome to Bill Buckner-ville, pal. You'll be joining Chris Webber (circa 1992) on a very elite and infamous list.

Can someone explain exactly what happened in that OT? From the telecast that I saw (ABC) it looked to me like the Mavs' coach was also throwing up the timeout sign from the bench area.

From what I could gather at the moment it happened, ABC showed Avery signalling timeout and then holding up two fingers, which I took to mean "call time out after the second shot", but apparantly Josh Howard didn't get the second part of the signal and called timeout immediately, meaning they lost their abilty to move the ball to halfcourt and get an actual last shot as opposed to Harris having to heave it from 60 feet in desparation.

And oh my holy God. In both the case of the free throw at the end of Game 5 and for the series itself, I'm like the part in Hoosiers where Coach Dale is yelling "ONE MORE! JUST....ONE...MORE!" at Ollie at the foul line.

As I'm watching game 6 I will give David Stern some credit. Even if Stern did rigg the series it has been exciting. I wonder who gave the NBA all these ideas?NASCAR? Why does not the WWE book like this?

Anyway Wade looks like he is totally owning Dallas now, Payton may finally get his ring, and Shaq can say I won a ring without Kobe.

It is late in the 3rd if Dallas can't start making some shots they are history.

Let us see what stern has booked in the 4th.

Well, Shaq made good on his promise - even though he was really pretty average throughout the playoffs.

That Dwyane Wade is a pretty good basketball player.

As I predicted HEAT WIN!

Cuban seems to be taken it okay not going Bret Hart.

ShaQ just gave Dale Brown a shout out.

This is now the funniest post on The W.

I gave up on basketball a long time ago once my Knicks quit trying, but I will always have deep hatred for the Heat. So uh...fuck this! Dallas deserved every bit of this loss for announcing a parade schedule. Over 100 years of sports jinxes and you would think somebody would take notes NOT to do things like that. Have fun with the Cubs in therapy. Jeeeez.

Because REAL champions win at the FREE THROW LINE!

But seriously, I hope someone in the Los Angeles Lakers front office watched this whole series, because this needs to come as a wake-up call to someone. Someone thought it was a good idea to trade Shaq for nowhere near his trade value. Not only that, but someone decided to take the best player the Lakers got in said trade and trade him off to Washington for Kwame Fuckin' Brown!

Well, look who's holding up a championship trophy? Hint: It's not Kobe.

If this doesn't cost Mitch Kupchak his job, I don't know what will, because the Lakers franchise has been embarrassed on this day.
