Originally posted by John OrquiolaThen there was the fun angle of John Cena being Wade Barrett's slave. I enjoyed some of that. Wade as Megatron, David Otunga as Starscream, we all remember that analogy. I loved Wade ordering Cena: "Go get me a glass of water!" But WWE bungled that as well; the devil was all in the details. How John Cena was allowed to keep his colors and never wore the black and yellow N shirt.
I was there live for the water incident! Sadly didn't chant "wa-ter boy" as I never even heard that chat being said. I did love that analogy, vintage The W!
Say what you will about WCW, but they would have Cena wearing that yellow N shirt on day ONE. They were all about the t-shirt, brother.
For 3 months the feud was red hot. They clearly had momentum and some sort of (mysterious) direction and people couldn't stop talking about it.
Things stayed interesting up until the 'Cena joins Nexus' moment. Then it went downhill very fast. And I still believe that they rushed through that part because they wanted to free up Cena for another storyline. I just have no clue what story that was.
Everyone agreed that as a group they were strong, but with 1-2 exceptions the individuals were clearly green.
At this point Barrett is adrift but still has lots of potential. He's like many midcarders right now. If they could just write a decent feud, he'll be fine.
Slater & Gabriel are doing alright. A solid tag team in a world where tag teams don't matter. People know who they are, and they could be used as either a tag team or a decent midcarder.
Daniel Bryan, though he was only part of the story for 2 nights (the first one and then Summerslam) is doing okay. Used in a position where he gets to have good matches almost weekly and people know that.
After that the drop off is huge. Otunga is worthless as they forgot about his original asshole-charisma. McGillicutty and such aren't even original nexus.
CM Punk in charge of nexus? Pointless. So in the end they had a superhot story for 3 months, a terrible feud that probably did sell tickets for another 3 months. And in the end WWE ends up with 4 guys that are roster mainstays. I'm sure that's not so bad for a bunch of rookies that people rolled their eyes at during NXT.

That was the major red sign of WWE after becoming a monopoly. If something like a full blown WCW vs. WWE vs. ECW war can't break records then you probably can't hold the big storylines.
If that's what you consider "full blown", I'd advise you purchase a new dictionary.

I don't consider it full blown, but thats what Invasion's premise was and got screwed up, because of Vince and the backstage politics of the wrestlers not wanting to put over most of those new hires.

And the fact that it's hard to take the invading company seriously when their top stars are Booker T. and....Chavo Guerrero, I guess. I mean yeah, WCW hardly ever went over, but with the guys WWE brought over, I'm not real surprised.
They also brought in RVD and DDP. Plus, they had the Dudley Boyz turn which was one of their few legit tag teams. Rhyno was turned as well other guys who could have been made threats. Even with what they had they could have done big box office, they just shot themselves in the foot with the writing. They had Jericho who was also former WCW and ECW who could have joined them, but they turned Austin so many times in no longer made sense. Should they have waited for Flair and the NWO maybe, but the focus would be all about the fans wanting red and yellow Hogan and not the Invasion much like what happened with the NWO later that year.

What? They only turned Austin twice, once to lead the Alliance, and back when the Alliance dissolved. And it made perfect sense: "My name is Stone Cold Steve Austin, I am the World Wrestling Federation Champion, and I don't deserve to be treated like this!" Vince McMahon acted like he liked Kurt Angle more than Stone Cold. When the Invasion started, Vince McMahon took Stone Cold for granted and insulted him; he said he wanted the "old" Stone Cold to lead the WWF against the Invasion! The "old" Stone Cold, implying there was something wrong with him the way he was. Stone Cold Steve Austin is the World Wrestling Federation Champion, he didn't deserve to be treated like this! (Plus the whole summer, Debra was trying to poison him with her cookies.) So Stone Cold did what he had to do - he joined the Alliance and became their leader, and they showed him the love and the appreciation he deserved.
THIS is what the Invasion was to me. I was so goddamned entertained by Stone Cold's comedy every week, I really didn't care how horribly the Invasion storyline was going.
What?

Skip Sheffield, who has been out of action since breaking his ankle several months ago, announced he would be undergoing yet another surgery this Tuesday via his Twitter account. "Will be having a third surgery this Tuesday and it will be the last," Sheffield wrote. "There are a lot of people who are far worse off and this is all happening for a good reason. I wish I was back right now and doing what I love, but things are not right and they have to be fixed. I will be 100 percent very soon and back on WWE TV and I thank all of you for your support. I have kept my head held high and I cannot thank WWE enough for their support in this time. I have worked too hard too long to just give up and while it has been difficult it has only made me a stronger better person so please be patient and I will be back I promise."
Fuck. Three ankle surgeries. Heal well because the world needs you.

One tag match against the Hart Dynasty leads to three ankle surgeries? No wonder David Hart Smith dropped off the face of the planet. He must have destroyed poor Sheffield's career and it looked like the E was really high on him. And if D-Lo Brown and Kennedy has taught us anything, it's that you DON'T injure one of the E's stars or pet projects because of one of YOUR botched moves without paying heavy consequences!
First thing that comes to mind when I read this news is Grant "10 ankle surgeries later and 10 years too late" Hill. Hopefully 3rd time is really the charm for Skip.
Here's the bottom line (pardon the pun) ... The original Nexus message: "WWE management sucks."
It's certainly an idea that the internet can latch onto, but considering that the company is run by (you guessed it) WWE management, perhaps the suits aren't too comfortable pushing an angle where they (basically) admit that their product sucks.
Call it "insecurity" or whatever, but I think WWE just couldn't fully get behind an angle which introduced any kind of criticism whatsoever towards the way they do business ...
"All RAW is these days is a cheap version of Saturday Night Live, so if you wanna tune in to watch the amazing star power of Al Sharpton and Nancy O'Dell, go ahead! Who's gonna host next week, Big Bird? Wow, that's must-see TV!" - John Morrison (10/16/09 Smackdown!)

That was hardly ever brought up by them and never seemed their prime message. It was just a regular "we are demanding our spot" kinda angle, not unlike R-Truth wants now for being overlooked/conspired against, Alberto and his destiny and so on.
It might have been mentioned once or twice but that's it. Or maybe that's because management didn't want to put focus on it *shrug*
Im guessing Bischoff is winning Sunday..The RAW faces have been getting the upper hand on just about every show. Bischoff will have sole control and proably punish the faces and make things miserable for everyone.
