Wow. What a 48 hours. Where do I begin?

Joe Johnson to the Nets for several expiring contracts + 2013 first round draft pick

The free agency period officially started Sunday, July 1 at midnight. Within minutes news broke that the Hawks were in serious discussions with the Nets to trade Joe Johnson. I nearly had a heart attack just reading the news. For the uninitiated, Joe Johnson has perhaps one of the worst contracts in all of professional sports: approximately $90mil over 4 years for a 31-year-old SG on the decline. He had been, heretofore, universally deemed untradeable and almost a lock for being amnesty'd somewhere down the line.

Marvin Williams to the Jazz for Devin Harris

Within minutes of the JJ trade going final, we find out that Danny Ferry was also working on trading Marvin Williams to the Jazz. Within an hour or so, that deal also went final. Marvin's contract was nowhere near as bad as JJ's, but $8.5mil for an average SF and a 6th man at best was a bit much for a team struggling with salary caps and luxury tax.

And just like that, within, the Hawks sent out over $100mil in contracts and took back less than a quarter of that. The new-look Hawks may or may not make the playoffs this year as constituted, but they now have enough flexibility NEXT summer to sign two max contract players in a very loaded free agency period. They're currently considered one of the front runners to sign Chris Paul... AND Dwight Howard.

Be still my beating heart. I hate Duke basketball and all it represents, but by the end of the week I'll be wearing my Danny Ferry #35 Duke jersey proudly.

DANNY FERRY FOR TIME MAN OF THE YEAR

So who's the biggest dope in the Joe Johnson trade? Is it our old buddy Billy King, for letting him get talked into the single-worst contract in the league? Is it Mikhail Prokerov for buying this sorry team to begin with? Or is it Deron Williams for turning down Dirk and Mavs upon hearing he'd be playing with Joe Johnson. Seriously, who picks Joe Johnson over Dirk Nowitski?

I have to agree, Danny Ferry is a genius. If he winds up with Dwight Howard, it'd only be a bonus.

This is right up there with the Jays somehow unloading Vernon Wells' contract to the Angels a couple of years ago. Man, for those expecting the Nets would be the next big league power with the Brooklyn move and the crazy Russian billionaire owner, they really underestimated the 'crazy' part of that equation.

Since when are Chris Paul or Dwight Howard interested in going to Atlanta? Even after the clever cap-cutting moves by the Hawks?

Since now. Pay attention!

Longer answer: Both players wanted to go to Atlanta coming into the draft. They changed their minds since then mostly due to the ineptitude displayed by previous GMs. Now? Now it may be different. Or it may not, who knows, but at least there's hope. (FWIW, Dwight Howard's two best friends now play for the Hawks.)

All of this may be invalidated, however, if the Nets pull off the most recent trade they're rumored to be a part of.

The Hawks are banking on the fact that Atlanta is D12's home town. And as StingArmy mentioned, he's very good friends with Josh Smith.

IMHO, that's only the beginning of it.

I don't know if any reasonable Hawks fan would hang his hat on just those facts alone. A month ago that's all we would have had, and it really wasn't much. Since then, we've gotten a new GM, the owners have made it publicly known they aren't selling the team, we added Dwight Howard's OTHER best friend (Anthony Morrow, go figure), we created enough cap room to sign TWO max players, and last but not least Josh Smith went from very vocally demanding to be traded to being the lead recruiter for getting Howard to sign with the Hawks.

That's a pretty big change in circumstances. I no longer think it's completely unreasonable to think Howard might end up in Atlanta.

Didn't the Pacers just put their fans through a whole offseason of drama regarding whether or not they'd sign Al Harrington. And now, here we are, three months later and they TRADE him?
