I was arriving back on Long Island last night from three days of hell in Chicago (due to work, not the city)and I was waiting for my bags to come through when I noticed a rather shabbily dressed man sitting on a bench on the conrer of the baggage area with his head down reading a magazine. I couldn't help but look as something really familiar was drawing me to him. I took a walk over towards him and I realized it was none other than Long Island's own Mick Foley! I am not one for being star struck, but I have been a fan of Mick's for a long time and always thought of him as one of the good guys and meeting him was something I did not want to pass up. I didn't say anything and waited for him to lift his head. When he did and caught my eye, for a split second he looked like he was wishing he was somewhere else beside being ready to deal with a crazed fan (which at 36 those days are long behind me). In a low voice I asked him if I could shake his hand. He offered his hand and I just said it was apleasure to meet him and I would like to thank him for entertaining me on Monday nights for so many years and that I appreciate all he does for the fans. At that point he realized I was not going to draw attention to him or bombard him with questions and he eased up and smiledn told me he appreciated the sentiment and that he loves making the fans happy. With that I said thanks gain Mick and walked away. A few minutes later I was leaving with my bag when he looked up and said "have a good evening buddy" to which I sadi "same to you Mick" and walked out of the airport.

It struck me as I was leaving as to how much he appreciated not only my thanks and praise but also the fact that I kept it short and did not draw attention to him. He was able to get back to his magazine and not have to worry about either being rude and telling me to leave or having to put up with the same questions like "How did it feel when the Undertaker threw you off the cage?". There is a time and place to be that excited fan and there are other times when we should give them their privacy. And when you adhere to those rules, things usually go well.

All in all, Mick came across as a really down to earth guy who Vince should hire as the WWE ambassador and have him at house shows talking with fans and doing PR work. That is how he can be used best.

Inigo Montoya: Who are you?

Westley: No one of consequence.

Inigo Montoya: I must know...

Westley: Get used to disappointment.

Inigo Montoya: 'kay.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mick at the Capitol Combat PPV, as well as just about every other WCW wrestler. He was polite and talkative. I thanked him for his time then, and he seemed very happy to oblige.

I got a chance to meet Mick right after Vince gave him the Hardcore Title. He was at Vista Ridge mall in Lewisville, TX.

Funny thing, my friend got to hold the belt, and since it was all jagged it cut his finger. Mick laughed and said that he had also cut his finger on the belt the night before (the day it was given to him).

That belt is Hardcore.

But Mick is a very down to earth guy. He smiled and talked to each person in line for a bit and never lost his pleasant demeanor.

My brother got to meet Mick Foley on a flight from Philly to L.A. a few years ago, during the summer of the "Who Ran Over Austin" angle. He had asked the flight attendant to get a signature, but she said Mick wanted to sign it for my brother in person. He went up into First Class; the guy sitting next to Mick was nice enough to move for about 15 minutes to give my brother his seat. From what I hear, they talked about how my brother was doing in school, our hometown, what Mick was heading to L.A. for, why we were going, things like that. Brother dearest, who didn't bother waking me up for any of this, came back with an autograph that he's still got framed in his room.

I agree, he sounds like a very down to earth guy. He could have just signed the paper and sent it back to coach, but he took the 15 minutes out of his peaceful flight to talk with the kid.

I agree - it's so weird seeing him not as the Undertaker, though, since he's been with that persona for so long (and went to great lengths to not break character in public).
