I've done pretty well in Blitzball, my first season i finished third, you're best strategy (or atleast mine) is to let the main character (whatever you named him) shoot EVERY TIME! The guys you start off aren't very good offensively, I think in my first season the main character scored 15 times, and one of my other guys scored once and that was it. And I don't even have the Jecht shot, that's just with the Sphere shot.
I'm now on my second season and i'm tied for first with the Ronso team, which surprised me cause they are the team i beat the easiest. But I started wondering around looking for people and talked to Wakka and he will join the team! I never tried signing him since he said he had retired and all that but if you try and sign him he WILL join the team. And his shooting starts at 11. Man if i'd have him this whole time and been leveling him up then I would be unstoppable with him and the main character.
My only problem with the game is that I don't like the two main characters (Tidus and Yuna) now normally this would be very bad, especially considering that one of the reasons I hated FFIX so much was because the main character sucked. But all the other supporting cast make up for it. It's the only FF game where I can say that I like every single one of the supporting cast. Even the little girl Rikku is cool and that's rare because in the past games the "little girl" character has been horrible.
The voice acting for Tidus isn't great at times, but as a whole I can't think of any games that are much better, although a friend tells me the voice acting in the new Soul Reaver game is really good.
Overall it's a great game. Great story, great graphics, and I especially like the new battle system also.
I also don't like the main villain (atleast who I assume is the main villian but i'm not sure yet) but it's still possibly the best FF game, although I still really like FFVI because of the great story and such a large choice of characters and what easily the best game at the time compared to all the SNES games.
It's not really fair to compare a PS2 to a SNES game so I'll just settle for saying FFVI is the best pre Playstation game, and FFX is the best post Playstation game.
I currently at about 27 hours in and am in the Moutains....just got my ass handed to me twice by the boss fight, so I'm bulding up my characters a bit more. Auron and Wakka kick ass right now, I'm trying get Lulu to her third level spells (ie. Firaga, Billzaga, Thundaga and Wateraga)
I haven't really played Blitzball, I won the intial tournment in DOUBLE OT, then I tied the first game of the season (which is vs. the Luca Goers), I've only sign one guy, Brohter (the pilot of the Airship) and man his Pass, Shoot and Block stats are insane!!! 14 for each on level 1!
Oh and I too didn't have enough cash for Yojimbo. I'll go back once I have the cash.
I'm in exactly the same spot as you, Loosie. Hopefully, third times a charm with this boss. I actually lasted 10 minutes with him on the second try, but just ran out of manpower. One reason for that is that my Kimahri character is just about useless, which is actually my own fault. I was a little indecisive about which direction to send him on the sphere grid, and now I'm paying for it. He's by far my weakest character. His Overdrives are nice, but he's just weak!
After bitching about how much blitzball sucks about a week ago, I actually now find it kind of addicting. I'm trying to get Wakka's next overdrive, Attack Reels, by winning this tournament I'm in. Dammit I love this game!

Chuck, I have the exact same problem with Kihmari. I sent him down Rikku's sphere grid, and his strength paid the price. He's pretty fast and has some useful abilities, but still. Recently I warped him to Aurons grid, which should help his strength a good deal.
If the boss you are having trouble with is Seymour, when it gives you the message about the mortibody getting ready to annihilite, use a summon (with a full overdrive, of course) to take the blow.
On blitzball, once you find the right players, it is very easy. I've won about 30 times in a row and have given up a grand total of 2 goals in that time.
Oh, and that boss ain't got nothing on what is to come.
My Kimarhi is gonna rock ass...I sent him down Tidus' grid until I got to a junction with Auron's! So not only is his HP gonna soar, but so is his Strength.
UPDATE: Well I kicked the crap out the boss and now just finished beating Yunaleasca. I'm at 34 hours. So now it build-up time again and go get all the hidden Aeons. I got enough money for Yojimbo and have him now.
I must say I have enjoyed ALL of Cloister of Trials, and even though I have the guidebook and have been using it for secrets and stuff....I have not touched it for the Trials. THe Zanarkand Dome was fun, but time-consuming. The most challenging over all was the Thunder temple. It took me forever to realize how to get past the lightning pit. The most visually appealing had to be the 'futuristic' looking Bevelle Temple.
I finally finished over the weekend at somewhere around 75 hours.
Why so high?
I spent a good solid week jacking up my stats by killing assorted monsters and playing blitzball. This allowed me to get serious padding for Rikku, Yuna and Lulu, which enabled me to breeze through the battles inside Sin. I was able to doublecast and copycat Ultima and Holy and smoke the bosses. Oh yeah, and if you get the Magus Sisters, it's a cakewalk.
Odessa...I'm at the final boss...and having problems
I'm only at about 47 hours, Wakka, Lulu, Tidua, Auron and Kimahri have reached the end of thier natural paths on the Spehere Grid...I do not have Ultima yet. Basically I don't have any Level 4 spheres yet...she's sitting outside that area waiting for some spheres.
I powered through the boss before the final boss by calling Anima in overdrive....one shot and he's gone!
I have a feeling I need to boost my characters a bit more....I have the One MP Cost on both Yuna and Lulu, but I don't have Ultima, or the Magus Sisters. The closet I got to beating him was having 40,000 HP left on him....but then he used a nasty move that killed EVERYONE!
I must say the final battle has to be the most annoying battle i have EVER played in a Final Fantasy series.
And to Chuck....I don't want to spoil to much for you so I'm not saying anything. But yes the game does lead you to believe that it ends in Zanarkand.
Oh and I haven't been playing much blitzball....will play more though.
The thing I like best about the final battle is the sudden change in music.
The easiest way, I think, to get level 4 speheres is to go to the monster arena and fight the chimera beast (which you catch in the Calm Lands). I believe you can get them either by defeating it or bribing it.
I defenitely would recommend getting the Magus Sisters. Their combined attack is super huge.
I finally sprang for a strategy guide last night. Damn I've missed a lot of stuff. I swore I wouldn't get one until I finished the game once, but you guys and your "Yojimbo" talk got my curiousity aroused!

I don't think blitzball sucks, at all. Actually, I've gotten quite good at it, winning four consecutive championships (the last three with final records of 10-0). The key here is learning techinques and SHOOT, SHOOT, SHOOT! LOL... Be aggressive on offense. And get some defenders who know what they're doing.
Here's a suggestion for a great goalie. Miyu is sitting down on a bench just after the shoopuf sequence, right before you meet up with Rikku. She's dressed in a red Crusaders outfit. Sign her, and have her learn Super Goalie as quickly as possible. It's very hard for opposing players to score on her.
I won the initial tournament in TRIPLE-overtime, by the way. 1-0, finally scoring with Wakka. I was starting to think the damn thing would never end.
Wakka sucks, by the way. If you want a good second scorer to go with Tidus, see what you can do about signing Ronso Fangs forward Argai Ronso. For some reason, the Fangs released him, and I snatched him up before you could say “Bob's your uncle.”
Rin is a surprisingly great passer. Teach him a couple of passing techinques as well, and he makes a very good midfielder.
Mifurey from the agency in the Thunder Plains makes a decent second scorer. I eventually released her to get Argai Ronso, though.
About the rest of the game. It's beyond addictive, my friends. It's in-fucking-credible, perhaps the best game I've ever played in my entire life.
I sent Kimahri down Lulu's side of the sphere grid, enabling him to learn tons of magic. Now, he is my #1 black mage. Add the fact that he has Ultima and the One MP ability equipped on his weapon, and Lulu has literally become expendable.
I've got the One MP ability on one of Yuna's weapons, too. So both my primary white mage and my primary black mage have (for my purposes) virtually unlimited magic power.
Tidus, Yuna and Rikku all know how to Steal. Rikku and Kimahri both know how to Mug. But I've equipped Rikku's weapon with Deathstrike, so I like to use her in situations against opponents susceptible to Death.
Damn, guys. A hundred of us could play Final Fantasy X, and our characters could end up a hundred different ways. That's why the sphere grid and weapons customization feature FUCKING RULES! It adds sooooooo much to the replay value of the game.
BTW... I vote for the “lake sequence” between Tidus and Yuna for Most Romantic Moment EVER in a Video Game.
If you're down with all that, give me a hell yeah.
And that, as they say, is that.
“Bow-wow-wow, yippee-yo-yippee-yay, Oil of Olay all day, every day!”
My initial tournament win only came in double overtime.
Tidus has the Jecht Shot and can score and just about anybody. I also signed Brother (pilot of the airship)...man his stats are KILLER~! He's my secondary scorer, I also have Wakka, but I got him rather late so he's struggling a bit. I have Botta is my primary Defense and he rocks right now. Keppa is still the tender to.

You got my vote too!
And chuck...I too have a guide, but I didn't start using until I was pretty much down...basically I'm using it for the secret stuff...and man if anyone can figure out ALL of that stuff without using a guide book! (Ie getting EVERYONE'S best weapon and activated) all the power too ya!
And he was EVERYWHERE...even in the skit before the theme. A good job, though, even if too many skits relied on his normal tough guy image. One of the better shows of the season, though nothing special.
