Okay, here's the deal ... I've decided to catalog my entire collection of comic books by Library of Congress (LC) standards; why would I do such a thing? Consider it a combination of discovering Michigan State University's comics collection way back when, and an excuse to get some "practice" in case I ever decide to pursue a post-graduate degree in library studies.

Anyway, I think we'll start with the first 35 comics (in alphabetical order, of course) for now ... If anyone shows any interest in this thread (which they won't) then I'l lsubmit the rest of my collection in various parts at a later date. However, if CRZ deems this nothing more than a waste of his bandwidth (which it is) than I shall abandon the idea altogether and speak nary a word of it at The W again.

P.S. You can ignore all the numbers (600, 245, 710, etc.), that's just "library talk" ... of course, if you're REALLY curious than you can look up their meanings here.

Coincidentally, I've just started the process myself, after having put it off for the past 20 years. Yesterday I went and bought a bunch of bags and boards for the ones that didn't have them, and I went through that horrible process last night. My living room is currently covered with piles and piles of comics.

Out of curiosity, is there a program which helps catalogue the collection? Also, can anyone recommend a decent buyers' guide? I'm curious what the worth might be.

the MSU collection is freaking awesome. I did some research there for a conference paper and nothing makes a geek get wood than someone bringing the first ten issue of All-Flash comics.

The Overstreet comics price guide is definitive.

As for comics databases, sorry, can't really help you there -- I know there are some out there, but I don't use one myself.

Anyway, neat cataloging. And here I thought I was the only library-type guy at the W.

Back in the early 90s, I wrote my own DOS pascal program to catalogue them. After we got windown 95, I converted my database to Excel.

Excel just seemed a natural choice at the time. I could setup fields as I needed them. If I had MSAccess, I'd have used it instead.

I am now in the process of converting it to my SQL database on my website.

I adore the Spider-Man DVD-ROM collection. The books look great in Acrobat and are complete, including ads and letters pages. I used mine to read the complete JMS run and the death of Gwen Stacy storyline, but there's so much more in there I haven't read....
