Mutombo to the Nets for Van Horn and MacCulloch.

My take: The Sixers get another slow center in MacCulloch but at least he has soft hands and an upside (even though it is limited) whereas Mutombo is clearly on the downside of his career. Van Horn will provide depth at the power forward position and may very well steal the starting job from Coleman. If not, then he will be trade bait but at least the hangman’s noose that was Mutombo’s contract has been removed from the Sixers heads.

All true. But you gotta do that deal if you're Jersey though. I would NOT want to face them now.

I just turned to NBA.com for the hell of it, and... holy shit.

To me, this shows that New Jersey is definitely going with a “win now” mentality, because they just got rid of two young up-and-comers in exchange for one aging superstar. They picked a good one in Mutombo, don't get me wrong, but I don't believe this deal was designed to pay long-term dividends for the Nets.

For the Sixers? Well... this is interesting. Van Horn will take some of the scoring load off of Allen Iverson, and the Sixers are finally no longer a one-man offensive team.

This is... interesting, and unexpected to me, to say the least. The question foremost in my mind is, how much longer can Mutombo continue to defend as well as he has his entire career? I have no doubt that half of the shots he blocks this year will go into the Hudson River, but I don't think he has much time left.

Now, compare that to Blockbuster; you are two days late with a video and those people are all over you. Let's put Blockbuster in charge of immigration.”

Mutumbo and Childs aren't spring chickens and Kidd only has one year left on his deal - Nets need to win it all this year to keep Jason from crossing the Hudson and playing at MSG

Kidd has said that he would prefer to return to the Western Conference.

The Nets have to be the favorite in the East this year.
With Mutombo and Kidd they have the best center and point guard in the East. Kidd isn't going anywhere. The Nets will give him whatever he wants.

Van Horn has potential but is soft and inconsistent.

The concept of Van Horn and Coleman on the same team seems like a really really bad idea. Two underacheivers competing for time at PF? RIP, 76ers.

No offense, but how do Keith Van Horn and Todd MacCulloch qualify as "up-and-comers"? Van Horn has been around long enough to qualify as "Charmin Soft", and MacCulloch is going to turn 27 mid-season. 27, while not old, is older compared to the 18-year-old rookies.

They are up-and-comers when compared to Mutumbo, though!!!

MacCulloch may be 27, but he is still learning. He has only played 3 years in the league. (he actually went to college first, what a novel idea) He has improved his PPG and RPG every year, so I think that qualifies as "up-and-coming".

As for Van Horn, he has only played 5 years. He has never reached what people expected, but perhaps the people should be blamed for having too high expectations. I mean there are not a lot of people who can say they average >18 points and >7 rebounds per gamne over the last 5 years. Up-and-coming, probably not, but certainly moreso than Dikembe.

Those Sixer fans should look at Van Horn's contract maxed out for many years. He hasn't shown any improvement in his five years.

ESPN has just reported that the Knicks, Scott Layden, has turned down a deal. It would have sent Kurt Thomas, Travis Knight, and Charlie Ward to Philadelphia for Mutombo.
Now either Layden is an idiot, or this is just a bogus rumor. Or Both.

Now the Knicks are looking at a new trade offer of Sprewell and Thomas for Mourning. Great, just trade your two best players for a guy with a bad kidney. :(

I wonder if they could throw in Eisley, Houston, Travis Knight, Shandon Anderson, a years supply of hair gel, and 10 or 15 Armani suits instead of Thomas...
