I grew up in the Northwest for most of my life and people just didn't seem to care for the cars that go round and round in a circle, and neither did I. I later moved to the North East, to a state with no pro-sports team and found that the people here really liked the NASCAR. I however did not and blew them all off. I could not help but notice all the advertising everywhere though. NASCAR guys on bags of chips, cereal, cleaners, and tools. Then there was the clothes, the hideous hideous clothes that these people, these fans would dress themselves in. Couples in matching Dupont outfits, fat guys in Home Depot orange jackets and hats, good ole' boys in Budweiser garb, or god forbid the air brushed Dale Sr. shirts. Fuck them and their stupid rituals I said then.

Three years have passed. I still live on the eastcoast. I still consider myself the same person, slightly older and with a little more weight, but I'm still *keepin' it real* Only now I watch the fucking NASCAR. It started so innocently. First, I wanted to see why the people I worked with liked it so much, then I found it a way to take a nap on Sundays, and now I look forward to it. I don't have a favorite driver and I don't watch full races, not yet anyway. I may one day, but God forbid if I ever dress in the colors of a driver or fly the flag of one of those cars.

NASCAR has become my third favorite sport ousting basketball ... which I used to love with a passion. I feel like the NBA has left me. It's all about the glitz, glamour and gold. It's gotten sloppy with kids that should still be honing their trade at lower levels. NASCAR however has such great technology now that we can ride with the driver, on the rear bumper with panning cameras or see one of the endless views in what seems to be a thousand cameras around the track. I think that's probably what drew me in. The ability to bring the action into my home the way that they do. That and maybe the fact that I can't drive down the lane like I used to, but I can still drive a car goddamnit!

I guess a lot of people don't like to admit they like NASCAR for the same reason they don't like to admit they like wrestling. There's an image. There's an image that you are a beer drinking hillbilly dressed head to toe in some kind of corporate gear flying a #17 flag with a bumper sticker remembering Dale Sr.. Well, goddamnit I'm here to say that I'm a closet NASCAR fan and while we may not have our own folder here at the W we, or I at least won't hang my head in shame.

I don't really know where I'm going with this. It turned out a little more long-winded than I might have hoped, so I'll end this with a "Where is the NASCAR folder?".

The thing about NASCAR is that if you only watch the Sportscenter hilights, all you see is a wreck or two, somebody getting passed, and the finish. But, if you watch it on FOX (whose coverage is about 100 times better than NBC) and listen to "DW" you can actually UNDERSTAND the fact that thier is real strategy involved, and just how much mechical tweeking goes into those cars, before, and during a race.

Thank you for your irrelevant opinion.

With all due respect I don't like NASCAR but not for the reason you described. I'm tired of watching 5 laps of racing then a yellow flag going up for the next three for a variety of reasons. Yet when I watch Formula 1 and WRC (two motorsport leagues that aren't as popular but are more intense IMO), it takes an act of God to bring out a full-course yellow or race stoppage.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

My mom always says that the last 5 laps are the only ones worth watching.

For the record, I do enjoy watching it, that is, until Football season comes around. By then, it's NFL on Sundays and NASCAR is an afterthought. And the NASCAR Nextel Cup is the only series I watch.

I would say FOX absolutely blows any other live sports coverage on any other channel out of the water. Their NASCAR coverage is AMAZING.

NASCAR? I don't get it. Much in the same way that I don't watch Seinfeld, for lack of a better example. I'm neither compelled to watch cars drive in circles (or crash) than I am to watch a show about nothing.

No, I don't rubberneck at crash sites, either.

Funny - "NASCAR" isn't in the spell checker!

The finish to the Busch race Saturday was pretty awesome.

Amen to these sentiments. I also don't like NASCAR because the strategy is weak and predictable and they are constantly tweaking aerodynamic regulations (in the interest of 'fairness') plus there is the restrictor plate nonsense. It has turned into spec racing, and I like variety in car racing. Still, it's fun to go to a NASCAR race because there is no sound like 42 700+HP V8 engines getting on the throttle at the same time. But, that's the same reason that drag racing is so awesome in person but, like NASCAR, boring on tv. It's what the Indy Racing League is trying to create; close racing with cars that are very similar. Instead, they have killed open wheel racing in the U.S. As a motor sports fan, I think it's damn near criminal.

Lastly, a big second to the WRC love. Those guys have the biggest stones in the motor sports world. They run balls out on any surface (sand, mud, ice, pavement); in mountains, the desert, the forest or wherever (in Africa, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, South America, etc.).

I'm a pretty devoted Cup watcher - Harvick's my driver - but there seems to be little love for the sport here. These guys pretty much prefer to obscure here. WRC (a racing series I, thankfully, cannot identify), and obscure japanese jobbers are discussed and loved here before Triple H and Nextel Cup.

Popular things can only be hated.

Raw and Nextel Cup - these are my favorite shows every week.

(and Cautions? They are to races what Test matches are to wrestling - bathroom breaks)

WRC=World Rally Championship; Speed channel will be showing highlights of the New Zealand rally from 8:30-10:00pm CST this Sunday. They have a lot of in-car shots--drivers' view, rooftop view, under the car view, etc. They also do some overhead/helicopter shots.

Popular things can only be hated.

This sounds like the Yogi Berra quote--'No one goes there anymore. It's too crowded.' Still, it's definitely true that a number of motor sports fans hate on Nascar because it is popular, and there's definitely an elitist attitude among F1 and WRC fans. Like I said--there's nothing like Nascar live (or NHRA live for that matter). Pure testosterone and a great time. I don't watch them on tv but love it in person.

Because commercials are for channel surfing?
