I went to an advanced screening myself with my son, so seeing this in the morning made me think for a while.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/20/us/colorado-theater-shooting/index.html

They've since apprehended a 24-year old male suspect.

I think this could have (and has in the past) happened anywhere, but his outfit sounds eerily similar to Bane. I sincerely hope that's just a coincidence.

Meanwhile my thoughts are with the victims and families, some of whom are children.

The suspect's mother was told of what happened and she immediately realized that it had to be him. That screams "mental instability", which begs the question of how he acquired this caliber of weaponry in the first place. It's just a horrific situation all around.

If you want a firearm anyone can get one in a number of ways. I support the second amendment but I do think it is reasonable for background checks and reasonable to know who owns what.

Reasonable in terms of ethics, yes. Totally unreasonable in terms of practicality. If any person (with few exceptions) is going to be able to buy a gun, then there are going to be plenty of ways to get them legally or illegally. And how would knowing this guy owned this gun have prevented this incident, anyway?

I remember an episode of All in the Family where Gloria is telling Archie the statistics on murders with guns in the US and Archie replies, "Would you rather they be pushed outta windows?"

No disrespect to Dr. Bunker, but statistics would disagree with this assessment.

Among European countries, only Russia has a higher murder rate than the U.S., according to Wikipedia's collection of intentional homicide rates by country. I guess that doesn't prove conclusively that it's because of guns that Americans murder each other so much, but it does seem, to me, to discredit your implied assumption that murder's gonna happen, so it may as well be with guns.

Murder rates are determined by a lot more than just availability of guns. Culture is a big contributing factor and America has a very violent culture. And America has a lot more variety of culture.

Not saying some degree of gun control doesn't help, but nuts like this guy are gonna do horrible things either way.

I disagree with that statement. Yes, they are going to do horrible things, but if we limit them to hand guns, they won't do as much damage as they do with assault rifles. We also need to start red flagging people who buy a shit ton of bullets, too. It won't happen, because that would interfere with the NRA's agenda which is crying about the 2nd Amendment while not giving a shit about who gets guns and the consequences of giving military grade weapons to a populace with a cowboy complex.

Just because laws are on the books does not mean criminals won't get them The Columbine kids did not obtain their weapons in a legal matter.

In general, I'm pro-gun. I've fired an AR-15 and AK47 in the last 60 days. I'm not against guns, ok?

I still think we need to figure out something here. This is a really screwed up situation. Clearly that particular guy didn't need to have the firepower he did.

I don't have an answer. I just understand what both sides are thinking here. (Edit: Both sides being gun-control responses, and gun-freedom responses. I don't get the crazy, homicidal maniac side at all)

Normally the gunman kills himself or runs from the scene.

This guy did neither. So bizarre how he so quickly surrendered.

Republican or Democrat, the NRA will hound you out of office if you fail to toe the 'absolute gun freedom' line, so it's no longer a political issue. The Dems gave up on gun control because it was too easy to get demonized over being "soft on crime". So the next time we have a thread-worthy event, nothing will happen then either.

Just like nothing happened after Columbine, Va Tech, Tucson, DeKalb, Ft. Hood and probably another dozen mass shootings in the US over the last decade.

Probably the best thing we (as a society) might be able to do, is get the TV media to downplay these stories, like they stopped putting the fools who run onto the field on TV. You'd hope this won't lead to making a trip to the movies like a trip to the airport/courthouse.

90,000,000 people who legally own about 250,000,000 guns between them, DIDN'T go on a shooting spree Thursday night.

One jackass out of 90,000,000 doesn't necessitate limiting peoples right to own a firearm if they so choose.

Chicago and Washington have gun bans, anybody want to venture a guess if those bans have stopped gun violence?

Guns are used far more, by responsible gun owners, than are used in a criminal capacity.

It sure is a good thing that no one in this thread or anywhere on the entire planet wants to ban your guns then.

Ban, limit access, restrict quantities, those are very real wants for those who oppose peoples rights to own fire arms.

That was the goal of Fast and Furious. Drum up enough violence and use it as an excuse to introduce gun control laws.
