You left out 1992: Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Give It Away"

And here's the list for its predecessor, the Most Experimental Video of the Year:

1985: Art of Noise - "Close (to the Edit)"
1986: a-ha - "Take on Me"
1987: Peter Gabriel - "Sledgehammer"

Boy, there's a real dropoff in quality of musicians, isn't there? I could stomach that if the winning videos were at least good, but over the last eight years or so it hasn't even been anything visually interesting.

It is interesting to try to figure out when the actual video stopped being the criteria, rather than whomever MTV wants to "push" at the moment (for lack of a better term). I'd say the switchover happens after Jamiroquai, although the Lauryn Hill video is pretty decent and she may have won even if she wasn't the Artist of the Moment.

Those last five, though, are all completely average videos that probably wouldn't have been in consideration ten years prior.
