Ok, did anyone else catch this last night? After hearing what happened, I just HAD to catch this through the magic of TiVo!

HIGHLIGHTS (or LOWLIGHTS, depending on your view)
-Britney Spears opens the show...and proceeds to bomb BIG TIME! I watched this more than once and YEESH! Think of her scintillating "Slave 4 U" performance from a few years ago...and then think of the complete opposite of that! She was horribly out-of-shape and she could barely move along to her own song. Somewhere along the way, the lip-syncing stopped and the camera could only cut to the confused expressions of Diddy and 50 Cent. Yikes! Her career's now officially on life support and the plug will likely get pulled when her new album inevitably bombs.
-Sarah Silverman getting the unenviable task of having to follow that trainwreck. Though she gave it her best shot. "Just a few years ago on this very show, she was this sweet, innocent girl in slutty clothes...writhing around with a python. Aw, that's not nice...calling Madonna a python." Good stuff.
-Justin Timberlake's wins, which would NORMALLY be a mere footnote. But then Justin proceeds to BITE THE HAND THAT FEEDS HIM and bash MTV for not playing more music videos. It was awesome the first time, but then he proceeds to do it AGAIN later and points out that no one cares about Jessica and Ashlee Simpson reality shows. Ouch! Very ballsy display from Justin and I applaud anything involving demands for MTV to go back to their old format.
-Chris Brown's performance. I'm not big into his music, but I can appreciate his performance, which included a Michael Jackson homage. Nice!
-Alicia Keys' performance, which actually has me somewhat excited for her new album. Note to the former Mrs. K-Fed: THIS is how you make a comeback from a long hiatus.
-Cee-Lo doing his Prince cover. Very good stuff.
-The new format. It was definitely different and actually had a must-see feel to it, as opposed to previous years, in which they stuck to the Same Old Formula. And any show in which Dave Grohl gets wasted on-camera is definitely worth watching.

Oh, and there was some off-camera stuff involving Tommy Lee and Kid Rock. Apparently, Tommy Lee felt he was being snubbed by Rock and attempted to make jabs at him. When he started to get more physical, Rock slugged him. Security removed both guys, but AP reports show people in the surrounding vicinity being more amused than anything. Including Jamie Foxx (who could have had Line of the Night honors had it been caught on camera) who quipped "Stop all this white-on-white violence!"

If you didn't see it, catch one of the millions of replays that will inevitably ensue on MTV. I think MTV just might have stumbled onto a winning new format for the VMA's.

Now if only they'd listen to Justin...

Buy Kanye West's "Graduation" (The W at Amazon) and YOU can help send 50 Cent into retirement (and put some money into The W while you're at it)!

The Spears trainwreck was sad, even painful to watch. You can tell she just had no idea what to do out there.

The Tommy Lee vs Kid Rock "fight" wasnt much. But, Kid did get cited for the altercation. The video I saw made Lee look like a bitch. I guess when the person you want to hit isnt a 120lb woman, things are a bit different.

I hear Kanye West was complaining again about not being able to perform, and not winning any awards and vowed to never show up again (thank you MTV)

It was showing on CTV, and I had no idea if it had aired already (like 2 months ago) and they were just reairing it, or if it was live. I started watching halfway through the Britney performance. Calling her "horribly out of shape" is an exaggeration, as it's not like she's overweight, but she definitely was not in the phenomenal shape we are accustomed to, so maybe the bikini was a bad idea. I thought the song was bad, but I'm not the target audience, so I didn't think it was too terrible for Britney. The lip-synching was amusing, though.

I stuck around for Sarah Silverman's monologue; the python joke was my favorite as well; second was the Cee-Lo/Kanye joke. Then I realized that there were probably 20 other things that I could be doing with my time, and never gave it another thought until I started seeing headlines about Britney bombing.

Aside from Chris Brown's awesomeness, this was probably the worst show they have EVER done. It was more A.D.D.-riddled than I thought was possible, even from MTV.

And let's not give them too much credit for the new format. I heard on the radio this morning that ALL of the performances in the suites were pretaped on Friday night. So much for the live, anything-can-happen mentality.

The format was sort of similar to the MuchMusic Video Awards, where the awards are given out and performances take place in various locations around the Much building at Queen/John in Toronto. The difference is that Much doesn't cut away from the performances after a minute. WTF was up with that? It was like, "Oh wow, the Foo Fighters are performing with Cee-Lo! Well, enough of that, let's get back to the shitty awards show!"

The best part about Timberlake's "cut out the reality shows" spiel is that his second award was given to him by the girls from the Hills. Ah, sweet irony.

"The Mexican rebels aren't running it back for touchdowns, so it's close." (thecubsfan)

A room full of people who'd rather be anywhere else, no fans, and two of the objectively worst efforts at entertainment in recent history? TASTE the excitement!

Sarah Silverman's only funny bit was the Cee-Lo/Kanye West joke. Nothing else really raised so much as a "that ain't right" chortle from the audience, nor did it on my end.

Sleeper lowlight of the evening: John Norris looking like he did a faceplant into a bucket of eyeshadow, then tried to wash it off with hydrogen peroxide. Apparently he believes in mirrors like Carl Everett in dinosaurs.

And maybe it's just me, but if you're advertising something as the biggest night of the year, it shouldn't be an ad for your website. Nor should all the excitement be taking place somewhere besides where you're actually holding the awards. And "one night only" does not mean "re-aired immediately following the conclusion".

I am glad that I am not the only one who thought Silverman bombed nearly as bad as Britney. The Britney/Silverman segment was the worst bit of television that I have seen in a long time. I didn't stick around to see the rest of this show.

That seems to be the general consensus among all of the reviews I've ready today, but I actually liked the show. And I didnt expect to either. I always think award show performances drag on too long, so the "cut-back/cut-away" format worked for me. And you cant argue with them cutting the whole show down to 2 hours either.

I turned it on during Jamie Foxx & Jennifer Garner's award presentation to the Gym Class Heroes, who Garner renamed the "GYM CLASS ... FALLOUT!!" They didnt seem to mind though. Jamie mentioned the white-on-white violence (and P. Diddy went there too) so I looked for footage of it on YouTube, but it wasnt up yet. My buddy suggested TMZ.com, but it wasnt up yet there either. What WAS up though was a clip of Britney's "performance". Mrs. Freeze said it looked like she was falling asleep the whole time and the more I watched it, it looks like every back-up dancer that touched her was actually trying to hold her up/make sure she didnt collapse. Also, she wasnt fat or anything, but she certainly had no business wearing that outfit on TV.

I'm too lazy to look for it now, but I'm pretty sure I predicted Britney's trainwreck-ness several months ago RIGHT HERE On This Very Messageboard.

Other random notes from the show:

  • Rihanna got a big ole butt. I know I told you I'd be true. But Rihanna got a big ole butt. So I'm leaving you.

  • HOW TO TELL YOU'RE OFFICIALLY OLD #637: When you have no idea the VMA's are on and only stumble across the show by accident.

  • Justin Timberlake = GANGSTA.

  • So footage actually exists of the white-on-white violence? Take THAT, Source Awards!

  • Forget about Batista and Barry Bonds, Dr. Dre is the one congress needs to investigate! Holy crap, when did that happen??

  • If someone had told me that Kevin Federline would come away from that divorce looking better than Britney, I never would've believed it. Did she recently change management companies or something? Her whole downfall reminds me of what happened to Mike Tyson after Cus D'Amato died.

  • You know who else got a big ole butt? Alicia Keys. I still like Rihanna's better though. That thing was sticking out so far you could use it like an umbrella! Ella. Ella. Hey. Hey. Hey.

  • I dont see the appeal of Sarah Silverman at all. She almost reminds me of Jenny McCarthy the way she milks the "OMG lookit this pretty girl being offensive! That always = teh funny!" thing. Except she's not that pretty.

Hmmm...looks like I didn't miss anything. I stopped watching MTv years ago when rock/heavy metal was pretty much wiped off of the station. Even then, I only watched Jackass on occasion.

Didn't see the show, just the clip online of Sarah Silverman.

I know she says things to shock, but I think calling innocent children "mistakes" crossed the line.

    Less shock, more funny please.

Yes, but that's all Sarah Silverman can do. She doesn't have any actual talent, so she depends on cheap shortcuts. She would be the Britney of comedy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one in the Sarah Silverman Sucks club. I've never understood what all the hype was about with her. "Ohh, I just told an offensive joke. Look how cute I am!!!" She's a bottom feeder in the pool of women comedians. Give me Wanda Sykes any day of the week.

I'm anti-Sarah myself, but I will point out that she's a very good comedic actress. It's her smugness and her shitty jokes and her self that I hate.

I think Sarah is funny as hell, but never understand why people think she is cute. I suppose both points are a matter of tastes.

Not to crush It's False, but it appears Kanye and 50 Cent are on the same page with their hatred of MTV, which will lead to a collaboration on 50s next CD and a likely built in excuse to keep making them after Kanye outsells him this week.

Between Kanye, 50, and Justin, the cool thing to do nowadays is publicly hate on MTV. I'm definitely ok with that.

EDIT: And at this point, I'm just happy to have a decent hip-hop CD, whether the purchase helps result in 50 Cent's retirement or not. The Kanye West album definitely gets a thumbs-up from me.
