I've finally decided to get an Mp3 player/iPod thingie. I'm a relatively late arrival to the portable Mp3 player market, but I'm sure some W's out there have some Valuable Advice and Insight to add to my purchasing decision.

Some questions and points you can help me out with:

-I just want a portable, USB device that I can load MP3 files on. Plus, be able to carry the occassional Big Ass Graphic File that I'll shuttle between work and home. Program installation is very strict in the office, so installing something like iTunes might get me in trouble. I'd be cool if it could connect like those little 512MB flash drives. No wacky management program, just a "Detachable Media Drive" that I can access.

-I'm thinking at least 30GB is a good size...around 300 bucks. Reasonable?

-I'm not into making "playlists" -- just want about 1,000 of my crappy songs in one place. I'll hit "shuffle" or "random" and let 'em play.

-I'm a big anti-Apple person (long story) and would prefer to not go with an iPod or have to install iTunes.

-Doesn't have to synch with Rhapsody, Napster, iTunes or any of those online music services. In your opinion, are these essential to having an MP3 player? I'm old fashioned, in that most of my digital music files are made from CD's.

-I was looking at a Phillips GoGear 30 GB player, since it also contains a radio receiver. That'd be a cool feature, but has anyone had any experience with this brand?

-I'll definitely need an adapter or FM radio transmitter, so I can play stuff on my car's system.

-No jogging or anything like that. It'll primarily be played in my car or through a set of speakers in my office.

Any other recommendations, words of advice, or harsh criticism would be welcome. Thanks.

I have the 20 GB Dell DJ. I've had it for about a year and a half & have been really pleased with it. Sure, it's not compatible with iTunes, but I've used the Real Player music store when I want to download some tracks.

Not that this is gonna help, but I have a Rio Nitrus player, it retails for about 100 bucks, but picked it up for about 25 bucks at a pawnshop. It charges pretty quick and holds about 300 songs.
