Carol Moseley-Braun Joins Presidential Derby (Reuters) - Carol Moseley-Braun, the first black woman elected to the Senate, announced on Tuesday that she would enter the crowded field of Democrats seeking the White House. Moseley-Braun, 55, said she would emphasize her opposition to war with Iraq and campaign on domestic issues, including the struggling U.S. economy. Her campaign, she told an audience at the University of Chicago, could be summarized as one promising "peace, prosperity and progress."
I'm not voting for her this time. I voted for her for Senate, but she's had enough fiascos in the past that this is a bad idea for her, IMO, logistically.
True, she hasn't been a womanizer with bad taste or a coke-sniffing boozehound, but she's had some controversial moments in her past that could/"Will" haunt her.
That, and (not saying that Peter Fitzgerald's been gracious to N. Illinois) I don't remember her really taking care of her constituants.

While I admired her stand against the useless and outdated cancer that is Jesse Helms, her record otherwise is too tainted.
Folks forget she only won the Dem. nomination for Senate in a three-way between Alan Dixon, a moderate Dem. caught in the "throw them all out" mess, and another guy whose name escapes me, a rich guy who targeted Dixon with attack ads.
Dixon responded harshly, and Braun even won Downstate here as the "none of the above" candidate.
Braun didn't spend a dime in advertising here in Champaign County, yet still won the three-way.

Hey, I'll get behind anything that further fractures the Democratic primary race and makes the mainstream candidates have to go even farther to the left to win the nomination.

You should add "MAXINE HARVEY IN '04" to your .sig. ;-)
They were that afraid of Sharpton that the Dems had to bring Moseley-Braun back from New Zeeland? This primary has car-wreck enjoyment written all over it.

That's what they said in '92.

But, to paraphrase Rick Pitino: Ross Perot's not walking through that door. And even if he was, he'd be a decade older, and have no credibility.

THAT will give me nightmares!

A LOT of factors are different in '04 then '92.
1. The aforementioned Ross Perot.
2. Cynthia McKinney; the Green Party is likely to nominate this loose cannon as their nominee. She makes most of the "credible" Democratic candidates look like Jesse Helms. She's black, she's a feminist, and she's a leftist. Mind you, she does not have the credibility of Ralph Nader(and I can't believe I just said that) but she could give the Dems fits in the general.
3. The economy was the only issue last time; this time it's the economy and the war. Combine that with the fact that the economy started to shit out during a Democratic administration will create problems for whoever surives this mess.

Cynthia McKinney couldn't even hold her own district in a Primary after 10 years of incumbancy. You really think she'll give the Dems "fits?" She won't pull 1%, and Pat Buchanan would outpoll her if he ran again.
Now, there are plenty of people the Greens could run that would give the Democrats fits. Their best bet, of course, is a crazy rich guy (George Soros maybe?).

She'll give them fits in the same way Nader did. She could pull just enough votes away from the Democratic candidate to possibly turn a tight election. Just saying...

Eddie Famous is thinking of Al Hofeld, who spent millions torpedoing Dixon, and thus opened up the door for Mosely-Braun to slip into the race. And since no one expected Dixon to lose, the GOP slated a total reject to be the sacrificial lamb. So Rich Williamson got beaten by the coattails of Clinton, and Moseley-Fraud got into office. This of course led to the single worst Senate race in history, as CMB would lose to Peter Fitzgerald in 1998, giving Illinois voters perhaps the two worst possible choices in the entire state.
As for CMB, I would vote for Dubya in a 2 person race against her, and I voted for Nader last election. I am glad she is running though, as I REALLY don't want the spectre of Sharpton winning a couple of primaries hanging over the party.
And Grimis, if the economy is still crapping out in middle of 2004, I would not want to be the guy in the Bush campaign who is trying to blame it on Clinton. Even though it might be factually accurate, people are not going to give Bush 4 years of a free pass to not have gotten it fixed.

What I'm saying is that Cynthia McKinney will not get more votes than any other candidate the Green Party puts up. Ralph Nader got a couple points more. As for "just enough votes to turn a tight election" of course. So could any other 3rd party candidate, as we've seen, either way. Saying "She could pull just enough votes away from the Democratic candidate to possibly turn a tight election. Just saying..." is like saying "The Natural Law Party could pull just enough votes away from the Republican Candidate to possibly turn a tight election. Just saying..."

I think I actually like that spectre better than CMB winning a couple primaries. And I would rather vote for Al Sharpton's last Bowel Movement than Cynthia McKinney.

Yes. Exactly. Thank you. Perfectly explained.
