It would be career suicide by Estrada. Even with the controversy, he probably still has very little name recognition among the average voter.
However, Chucky is vulnerable against the right opponent. Unfortunately, that right opponent is Rudy, and I doubt Rudy would want to become 1 of 100 Senators when he can still make money off the private sector. Pataki, if he were to run against Chucky, might give him a very tough race though.

Schumer is as close to unbeatable as it gets in New York. The GOP would be wise to give him a pass and start working on Hillary.

Remember, Schumer is the guy who managed to make his opponent calling him a "putzhead" seem he called his grandmother a maggot-ridden dimestore floozy. Imagine what Rudy will give him to work with.

The GOP is thinking Estrada because he's Hispanic, and they're the group the GOP is currently salivating over. This could work if they nominate a socially moderate-conservative, economically moderate-liberal Puerto Rican or Dominican candidate from New York City. There's actually a couple of people who fit this bill (State Sen. Olga Mendez comes to mind). A arch-conservative Honduran who hasn't lived in New York for 10 years is not the ticket.

Although I have absolutely no faith in polls 18 months plus prior to an election, the New York Post last week had a poll whereby Rudy was beating Schumer 49-44 (border of margin of error). Schumer had about an 18 percentage advantage within New York City, but Rudy was strong upstate and in the suburbs. Now, that Rudy is under 50 percent with the good publicity he's had the past two years means that he would have a difficult time winning, but still, an incumbent in the low to mid 40's means that their is some vulnerability.

Schumer is beatable, but I agree that Estrada is not the guy to do it. Hell, they'd be better off trotting Lazio out there again for another try than to send Estrada out there because that politicizes his nomination to the bench even more than it alreasy is, which is highly impressive.

I think Sox is right on Rudy not wanting to be a senator - he did drop out of the last race, and didn't seem to be too broken up about it. The man's personality is really more cut out for cabinet or the governorship, rather than the senate anyhow. He has good and bad qualities, but I don't think that anyone has accused him of playing nice with others.

How do you know he's an arch-conservative?

And, most importantly, since when does somehow have to live in New York to become a Senator from the state?

Maybe so, but the case is pointless. There is little or no money to be sucked out of these two guys and the thing has already been on the net for a month, which is virtual eons. Pretty much everyone who is going to see it has seen it.
