A while back it was Raccoons in my attic (The W). The one raccoon was caught. The hole was found and repaired. Now it's a Downy Breasted Woodpecker that has decided, ever since we painted our house, that our wood shingle siding makes for a good meal. The shingles around one of my bedroom windows are starting to look like swiss cheese. Spraying the shingles with bug repellent seems to keep him off until the next rainstorm. I have thrown rocks & acorns at him but I have an arm that only a mother could love so that ain't working for me either. Keeping the bird feeder filled has kept him off somewhat but he keeps coming back.

Any suggestions ?

I know in some cases, there are synthetics that smell like predator urine. I've heard of synthetic coyote urine being used to keep deer away. Maybe there's something similar for woodpeckers?

The other thought I've seen is airports as well as my church having carved owls strategically placed which deters nesting.

A good trick is to take an old CD (or a blank) and punch a hole through the top. Insert a string (fishing line works the best) and hang it either on a nearby tree or even directly on the house or window near the effected area. Scares em off...

and - as you found out - don't get into throwing things. It's like teasing - and only makes it worse...even the squirrels kick back and say "look at that asshole!"

I'll be there for a much needed break from the house after just finishing putting in the pool. Serena, sadly, can't come with since she started work with T-Mobile last month so I'll be all on my lonesome for three weeks.
