So my three year old started playing with buttons on the monitor, keyboard, or both. Now, colors don't appear as they did before -- things look washed out, for the most part. Any tips on what to look for to fix what he did?

If he did it via the keyboard, it may be the "High Contrast" scheme in windows. I think you can turn this on with some combination on the keyboard. Generally this is black and white though, not washed out.
Odds are that your 3 year old hit the on screen display button on your monitor and turned either the contrast or brightness up. You can try altering those settings, or look for a "reset all" feature.
Generally you will have a button marked OSD or Menu on your monitor - look for this and work from there.
Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.
Again, I was using word 2003. But I just did the Header thing. Typed my name and then did insert page number (which in 2003 is the first button to the right of the insert auto text drop down) and it put my name and the page number in the header.
