This is with the benefit of hindsight, but was it a mistake to put HHH/Jericho in the main event? Couldn't they have wrestled a little bit earlier and had Hogan/Rock in the finale? I'm thinking somethign like a "double main event" akin to Mania 8. Hogan/Rock was just so emotional and so much fun that the crowd was spent by the time the main event rolled around. And neither HHH nor Jericho has the star power to compete with those two. Is the belt alone enough of an attraction? In this case, I'd say no (especially with the awful booking leading up to the match).

Would everyone have bitched less if they did that? Are Rock and Hogan more important than a title that unified the lineage of the (W)WWF and NWA/WCW? If the Undisputed Championship weren't the main focus of the biggest show of the year, many people (smarks leading them) would have seen it as the utter destruction of any credibility that the belt held. After all, wrestling is supposed to be about the belts, right?

I think horrible booking was the problem, not the order of the card. Stephanie's participation RUINED that angle. Now, I think that Stephanie has helped along a few angles in her past, and I don't hate her, but that fued was useless.

I think a lot of us had figured that out about two seconds after the PPV ended.

I think it was a mistake to automatically assume that, after HHH returned at Beautiful Day, they should automatically enter him into a WrestleMania program for the title. Especially since this is the organization that changes its longerm planning on a weekly basis. They cant decide what to do with Brock vs Angle except turn both between face/heel until something works when the story could have told if they just kept them as they were three months ago would have done just fine.

When HHH returned earlier this year, they were trying to recreate what happend when Austin returned the previous year. They immediately rushed to judgment and didn't care how mobile or rusty HHH was, and frankly, how popular he was. Admittedly, they somehow sparked fan interest at Beautiful Day, but that interest was based on the mystery surrounding HHH's return rather than HHH's character itself.

The subsequent buildup to the match served to ruin things in WWE as a whole as well. On Jericho's side, they had him beating Rock and Austin all over the place to make him look strong against HHH. On HHH's side, he was spending more of his time being concerned with the Stephanie feud than the larger scale things that were going on in WWE at the time (nWo, the belt). This did no one any good, not even Jericho as he was brought into the Stephanie/HHH feud and not building one of his own (which was already THERE) with HHH.

After looking at everything that was going on at the time, it's obvious that the WWF had tunnel vision geared solely at putting HHH over at Wrestlemania and that they completely ignored any other possibilities.

But, hey, here we are a year later and they've learned from all of their mistakes.

Hindsight being 20/20, they should have had Flair/Savage as the Main Event at Mania XIII instead of the Sid/Hogan everyone blow a run in fiasco for a main event.

A good point. But I would have laughed had Warrior run in to save Hogan when Hall and Nash were beating him down at the match's end.

See, it always irks me when people bitch about Triple H being put in the Mania topliner immediately upon his return. Go back and watch the tape of his Raw comeback. Listen to the crowd. I've spoken to people who were there. Nearly all have said that it was the loudest, most prolonged ovation they had ever heard. With that sort of reaction, could you blame them for pushing the guy to the Moon?

Yeah, but that was one night. He couldn't sustain that, especially after he opened his mouth and tried to cut a face promo. I'll bet Hogan got louder pops on his little retirement tour. And that didn't draw, either.

Hogan/Rock should have been the main event because they spent the entire two months before the show promoting it as the main event. Period. And if you put Rock/Hogan on last, where the crowd (in retrospect) wouldn't have cared about the outcome, they could have done the smart thing and kept the belt on Jericho to make up for the crap of the previous month, then given it to Teo at Backlash to fill his ego.

All right! Time machine fantasy booking! Not only that but this brilliant idea wants to rewrite history so two guys who haven't been a blip on the screen since their "historic" match should have been pushed harder on the company's biggest night of the year. Yeah that's the ticket. This idea could have fixed everything!

Don't worry. Keep up the good work. Apparently the WWE loves these cutting edge ideas. I have it on good authority that Rocky/Goldberg will be the main at the next Wrestlemainia. That should make everyone forget the rest of those losers that bother to wrestle in that bullshit period in between WMs. Bravo.

That's my main gripe with Rocky, and why I think he was booed against guys like Hogan and Lesnar (both of whom were supposed to be heels). I'm sick of Rock running off to make movies and leaving everyone else to keep WWE exciting in his absence... and then when Rock does return, he's still got his spot, he gets WrestleMania main-events and World Titles. I think it's a crock of shit, and I don't care how damned over the man is. He's making money for WWE by making movies, I understand that. But if he really wants to help WWE, maybe he should stick around for an extended period of time instead of making movies and coming back for his token pushes.

The Rock's last return and title reign wasn't some ego stroke or power play. It was to put over Brock Lesnar and try to get him to the next level.

Rock understands his role better then anyone. He uses his status to elevate others, the ones that have to stay around during his time off.

The bottom line for most people is money. The Rock's a young guy, he's making lots of money doing movies and saving his health. It'd be stupid of him not to strike the movie money while he's hot right now. Maybe once he's established himself in Hollywood, he'll come back for longer stays. If not, then I can't really blame him.

I think I heard or read HHH saying it was a sorta last minute decision to put the title match -the most important match in the federation- as the final match.
Both he and Jericho were happy they did and so am I.

It didn't work out like that, but I don't think they could have expected the Rock/Hogan match to be such an emotional match..

The correct answer is that the title match should be the main event and Rock/Hogan should be the main event. So, since we are doing time machine fantasy booking, lets have Rock beat Jericho at the Rumble for the belt and defend it against Hogan at Mania. Then the Triple H vs. Stephanie (w/jericho) Grudge match could be next to last, since fewer people care about it.

At Summerslam Triple H could get his main event back by defending the Raw Title against Shawn Michaels and the Rock/Lesnar could be second.

My bad. But funny, the main events with Sid in them both sucked and shouldn't have been main events. Coincidence?

No way did Chris Jericho belong in the main event of the biggest show of the year. Not with all of the more talented, believable, and entertaining guys on the roster.

I think the funniest part of this thread is that in the week prior to the actual event, this place was FULL of people SCREAMING that Hogan/Rock should not be the main event and what an incredible mistake they were making by planning it that way, because the World Title had to be in the main event, and because Jericho had earned his spot to finally headline Wrestlemania.

So this is what happens when it's a slow news day of backstage decisions to complain about. I guess Triple H is taking the week off.

You're all wrong. The X8 main event should have been Angle vs. Benoit. They should have had main event rematches at 2002's Backlash, Judgment Day, King of the Ring, Vengeance, SummerSlam, Unforgiven, No Mercy & Armageddon as well as 2003's Royal Rumble and No Way Out followed by their best 2 out of 3 60 Minute Iron Man Submission matches at Wrestlemania X9 at which time Benoit would finally win the title and then type into the chyron (rather than speaking, so as to keep it as exciting as possible) that he was now retiring.
