I know there's rarely any discussion about Japanese or Mexican wrestling here (TheCubsFan not included). In the last year or so since the WWE has been subpar, I've been looking for wrestling alternatives like watching CMLL on Galavision (Shocker is awesome, in case you haven't ever tuned in).

But my greatest discovery has been Pro Wrestling Noah and All Japan. Since I vowed only to buy Wrestlemania on PPV this past year (unless a certain match-up really intrigues me), I've been spending my money on Japanese videos from www.wrestleholicsvideos.com instead of WWE PPV's.

This company has done a great job with lightning fast turnaround, great prices and most importantly high quality copies.

With all of the year end polls now in the books I'd like to recommend what was the match of the year in many of them from the 3/1/03 Budokan Hall Pro Wrestling NOAH show.

Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi for the GHC title

This match was incredible on many levels. Two fantastic wrestlers capping off what Dave Meltzer described (paraphrased) as the greatest feud with the highest match quality in the history of pro wrestling. Watching these two work is jaw dropping. The high level of psychology, technical mat work, the stiff strong style and the aerial moves make this thrilling to watch. The intensity is high at the beginning of the match and continues to build throughout to a fever pitch. The crowds in Japan are often polite and respectful, but by the end of this match the crowd was insane.

These two have had an incredible series of matches over the years dating back to the mid-nineties in All Japan and continuing on into the NOAH promotion which was founded by Misawa. Their matches in 1997 and 1998 in All Japan were also Match of the Year winners. I find it hard to make comparisons, but if you enjoyed the physical and mental intensity of the Flair/Steamboat, Flair/Funk or Angle/Benoit feuds then these Misawa/Kobashi matches are for you.

I've only been watching Japanese tapes for about a year, so I'm not that well versed with all of the other promotions and histories, but if you find the WWE product lacking in quality I'd recommend starting with this match.

I was also wondering if there are any other NOAH/All Japan/New Japan fans here and if you have any match recommendations?

Hey, if you dug that match, wait till you see their stuff before they broke down. PM me and I'll send you to some places with comps of the older heavyweight stuff that blows that NOAH match out of the water.

Its interesting that you write about this match i remember reading about it in Power Slam saying match of year these two are the best of any generation.

I then downloaded one of there matches from Kazaa in 95 i think. One word Stellar. The chemistry is incredible.

I love Kobashi comeback and that crab like walk he's got as his knees are completely f***ed.

I'm ordering that video of their match from that site.

Incidently Kobashi won the GHC championship on March 1 and guess what he's still champ (better then Triple H) althrough his title defenses have been amazing and he won the tag title as well for a bit.

Hw was voted No1 in Power Slam this year in top wrestlers in the world long may his reign continue

Too true. Their series of All Japan matches are the best I've ever seen in wrestling... period. Even liked them more than the Misawa/Kawada matches (which are also amazing).

It's impossible to watch them and not look at professional wrestling as an art form.

What exactly are the major titles in Japan now? I lost track after all the interpromotional battles.

Wait…if it’s MLK Jr. Day AND Pat Patterson’s Birthday…who gets the token win here?-- Matt "Excalibur05" Hocking on a match between Mark Henry and Rico

MH: What’s a clever way to say that I have a penis?
CJ: Uh…Mark, nobody’s going to buy that shirt.
MH: How about if I say that I’ve got…a…uh…?
CJ: Coming up with T-Shirt ideas is hard Mark, why not leave it to the WWE marketing department.
MH: I know! I’ve got it!
CJ: Got what?
MH: Stank! That’s Mah Stank! I’m gonna make a fortune!!
CJ: “That’s Mah Stank”?
MH: On the front it’ll say “Can You Smell It?” and on the back it’ll say “That’s Mah Stank”. Everybody’ll buy it because they’ll think it’s a Rock shirt.
CJ: You know…you might be on to something there, sad to say.
MH: I can’t wait to show mah stank to Trish.

You know, I have a feeling that Spanky didn’t quit, he was fired. Why? So they could repackage Mark Henry as “Stanky.” Think about THAT!

So it's the All Japan world title, New Japan world title, and this GHC belt (which I've never heard of) acting as the major three championships? Is this the 'Triple Crown,' or is that a separate title?

The Triple Crown is All-Japan's world title. The IWGP Title is New Japan's and the GHC is NOAH's.

The Triple Crown is indeed three different titles, but they aren't defended seperately or anything. They have become, in essence, one title. They were unified a long time ago. The champion just carried three belts around with him. Kind of like when the WWF first unified its and WCW's titles.

The IWGP has been New Japan's title for some time now, as well. I think it has a few titles unified in its past, but it is only one belt. When Takayama was champ last year, he also had his NWF(I think. I've suddenly completely blanked on the name.) title, which he never unified with the IWGP, and he retired it recently, I think.

NOAH created the GHC title a few years back.

They also have their tag titles, and cruiserweight titles.

And does Zero-One not get any respect? It has a championship, too.

One of the greatest. The only way it could be better is if Shelton Benjamin won the Money in the Bank ladder match and cashed in his shot ON THE VERY SAME NIGHT to challenge Michelle for the motorcycle.
