The big rumor flyin' around here is that Packer president Bob Harlan, when he meets with head coach/GM Mike Sherman later today (Thursday Jan. 13), is that Harlan will strip Sherman of his general manager duties, leaving him just as the Packers' head coach.
The top candidate to replace Sherman as GM is Ted Thompson, the Seahawks' VP of football operations...who has some history with both Sherman and the Pack:

Thompson served as pro personnel director and director of player personnel under {ex-Packers GM Ron} Wolf from 1992-'99. He worked with all three of the Packers' top personnel men - personnel analyst John Schneider, pro personnel director Reggie McKenzie and college scouting director John Dorsey - while in Green Bay and still has a close relationship with them.
Schneider and Dorsey also worked with Thompson in Seattle.
Though they aren't considered close, Thompson was with the Packers when Sherman was an assistant coach in '97 and '98 and shares a close relationship with Sherman's mentor, Seattle coach Mike Holmgren. Both Thompson and Sherman are considered to be committed primarily to doing what's right for the organization, and they could be a good fit together.
Oh, and yes, my station reported this yesterday. (WBAY-TV)
Personally, I think it's a good move, considering the only draft choice of Sherman's that's amounted to anything is WR Javon Walker, and Carroll may be the franchise's biggest bust in years. Although, I'm tempted to lynch Sherman as coach, too. Anybody who gives the franchise its first 2 playoff losses at home, especially within 3 years, is kinda on my sh*t list.

I don't understand why they even hired him in the dual role. We've seen this again and again in the NHL as well as in football: the coach and GM for a given team need to be two different people. It's too much job for one man.
The names people bring up when they talk about success in dual roles are Mike Shanahan, Tom Coughlin, and Bill Parcells. None of the three has done anything useful since Shanahan won a Superbowl.
I don't think Sherman's that great a coach, but I think he'd have a better record and one less home playoff loss if he was just the coach and not the GM as well.

As does Joe Banner in Philly but I think both Reid and Belicheck have the final say.
The total control makes sense since the coach is going to be the one using the players so picking your own guys is logical its just the workload that is too much for some to handle. | pieman

While it may be pronounced "Bell-a-chek," it is spelled Belichick. I know everybody in this thread and probably on this whole internet spells it incorrectly, but damn. It's Belichick. He's won two freaking Super Bowls and we can't spell his name correctly?

I don't think I've ever typed his name. However, I must confess to having gone to the Patriots website, because I was convinced that there was an "e" in the third syllable, not an "i".

When they're doing a draft board, they'll go over a name, and if either says no, they throw the name out and only keep the guys they both like.
