I've seen interviews with Benson throughout the offseason and he looked gung ho about the new season. He looked like a guy ready for have a monster season, but it looks like it'll be for Baltimore, who has themselves a new ace.

| #2 Posted on 21.1.06 1521.31 | Instant Rating: 5.42 | I don't think Benson is going to have an ace season. I could see maybe 12-14 wins with an ERA between 3.50 and 4.00 as the best case scenario. The ship has sailed on him being an ace.
Either way, I love this move for the O's. They only gave up a reliever who has been bad for three years now and was terrible last year plus a minor league pitcher who wasn't in the organization's top five and whose ceiling was probably as a four or five starter. Benson will solidify the rotation so Hayden Penn can spend time at AAA and could improve significantly working with Leo Mazzone (he was a former number one overall pick).
If the Mets thought this was anything more than a salary dump, they got fleeced big time.

It doesn't look like Benson's had that 'breakout' season after six years now, but definitely a solid starting candidate for most anyone's rotation. Even if $15.5 million for two more years of Benson isn't much better than market rate in this market. Miggy should like it though.
Without looking over the Mets roster, I imagine this is either opening up a spot in the rotation for Heilman, or you could believe the rumors that the Mets are picking up prospects that Billy Beane likes to swing a deal for Zito. Seems that the latter is more likely, under the 'bigger is better' rule of New York baseball. | redsoxnation

| #6 Posted on 23.1.06 1024.56 | Instant Rating: 4.09 | I agree. As a Mets fan, I say good ridance. Heilman needs a chance to consistetnly start so he should slide intot he #5 spot. They save a little money, but moeny never matters in NY so that is moot.
Julio will be a good 8th inning pitcher and spot closer to help Wagner. A bad 2005, as the Oriole closer from 2002-2004, he had a 1.99 ERA in 2002 and a career-high 36 saves in 2003. Moving to the National league and out of the AL East should help his numbers go back to where they were. And he is only 26.
Maine is good for the minors, but I do see him as trade bait for Oakland when the Mets make a run at Zito. And if that is the case, this becomes an even better deak for the Mets.
