1) She's hot.

2) This is the first confirmation that the project is moving forward with a writer and a script in the process of being written since the new film sans-Whedon was announced in spring of '09.

3) There's little actual info about the new Buffy script and concept to be had beyond this curious snippet: "While this is not your high-school Buffy, she’ll be just as witty, tough and sexy as we all remember her to be.”

Huh. Well, good luck to them. They have a tough road to hoe, succeeding without Saint Joss involved.

I hate myself for taking the internet fanboy overreaction stance, but...

I think the movie proved without Giles, Xander, Willow, Angel and a great supporting cast as well as great villains, Buffy is a one note character. I don't care what the cup size is of the new writer, its going to be terrible. The fanbase is not as big as Trek or Star Wars or others, but its vocal. It was vocal enough to help get a WB President thrown out, I think its vocal enough to stop this or get it to the point that it reeks of fail after the trailer.

I am not a giant fan of Joss in these latter years, but if you think that if Avengers does a quarter of the business we expect, it wouldn't surprise me if a certain rat buys these rights or said rat helps Joss gets the rights to do Avengers 2.

Buffy and Angel were great shows and I honestly wish they'd just retire the characters, period. This movie's such a cynical cash grab and the nerd outrage could get really ugly the closer this thing gets to completion.

On the other end of the spectrum, Joss Whedon is REALLY starting to go off the rails with the canonical Buffy Season 8 comic. You need a scorecard to keep track of who's on whose side. And really, when you're resurrecting The Master, it's time to pack it in.

The Buffy comic went off the rails with Warren coming back with nothing, but skin. They are have been good stories here and there, but its unmitigated disaster. Angel's comic After the Fall was very good until they decided to charge $3.00 for 15 pages worth of story. Even as bad as the comics are, I still will take that over someone trying to "Dark Knight" this property into something people will laugh at best and hate at worst.

I don't understand the "retire these characters" nerd outrage. Should Batman have been retired when Bob Kane stopped writing and drawing him? Why not? He was the creator. Who else should tell a Batman story but the guy who created him?

That's an extreme example, but take the recent Star Trek movie. Someone else play Kirk and Spock besides Shatner and Nimoy? Criminal! (Actually, I did react that way. I'm happy to say I was wrong. I fucking loved JJ ABrams' Star Trek.)

My greater point regarding Buffy is that even without Joss involved, if someone can successfully reinvent Buffy, and do a really good Buffy The Vampire Slayer theatrical movie (because such a creature doesn't exist), more power to them. I'm not saying I believe the current producers can or will; no evidence exists as of yet they can.

Is it a cash grab? Of course it is! What isn't?! What, people make movies for free?

All I'm saying is I'm interested in a new Buffy. I love the character of Buffy Summers and that universe to a large degree, but Buffy Summers as Joss Whedon depicted her on television is relic of the 1990s. I'm absolutely interested in a new take on the character. As long as it's good. If it sucks, then that's a different story.

I described the comic recently as "official fan fiction."

About the only arc now I think would be worth rereading is the BKV Faith/Giles arc.

Whedon's response was so tongue-in-cheek that I don't know what's what. Since he actually created the characters, he'd have to be consulted for royalty purposes, right?

Not that the man is perfect. BTVS wasn't the perfect series that it's retroactively become thanks to TV critics. It was an average show over the last four seasons, and frankly, it just completely went to pot after the musical.

Wait, so is the new Buffy project only going to feature Buffy herself and not the rest of the Scooby Gang? So, like, the basic 'teenage girl becomes a mythical slayer' concept except with all of the Whedonverse trappings? That seems like redoing Batman except a mugger didn't kill his parents, he isn't Bruce Wayne, he doesn't live in Gotham, etc.

Should Joss have a consultation role in the new movie, executive producer credit or something, even if he's not directly involved? To that, I say probably. His name linked to the project in some way would have been the smartest business move. His "blessing" would have eliminated a lot of the perception issues right off the bat. I don't know what the deal is between Joss Whedon and the producers who own the Buffy movie rights.

To the best of my understanding: 1) Joss Whedon does not own the rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a theatrical film property. Therefore, he is owed no realities for any new movie about Buffy.

What do the producers of the new Buffy movie actually have rights to? Buffy Summers, the character, who is a vampire slayer. They also have the right to create new vampire characters. And I'm extrapolating that because the idea of "Watchers" exists in the 1992 Buffy movie, which is what the rights for a new movie derive from, they can also have Watchers in the movie. And that's really it, I think. It doesn't even seem like the new Buffy will necessarily be a teenager in high school.

Look at it this way: Whatever Joss Whedon created for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series he wrote, directed and executive produced for the CW and UPN are most likely off the table for the new movie. This includes: Rupert Giles, Willow, Xander, Cordelia, Angel, Dawn, Spike, etc. Also, quite possibly Sunnydale, CA, the concept of the Hellmouth, the Master, Glory, all of the villainous characters and supporting ancillary characters of the television show.

Now, does that sound like a deal breaker? Well, it is and it isn't. Look at it this way, if you're OUTRAGED that there will be a new Buffy who isn't played by Sarah Michelle Gellar and overseen by Joss Whedon, why wouldn;t you be glad that at least someone else won't be playing Willow, Xander, etc. besides the actors from the TV show?

I don't know... If I were already pissed there's a new Buffy movie (and I'm not), seems to me other people playing those beloved supporting characters (most of whom are more beloved than Buffy is, honestly) would make things even worse.

I think the new Buffy movie would actually benefit from taking the character of Buffy Summers, the Slayer, and doing something new with her. They can't outdo what Joss Whedon did for seven seasons and the story he told, with all the richness and vivid details of that universe. I think the smarter bet (smartest is not doing it at all but that's not the reality of things) is to take Buffy in a new direction and see what else can be done with the character.

But what do I know?

It sounds like its going to be "Buffy Begins.." They have all the same guys working on it that did Batman or said they worked on Batman since we know how loosely that term means in Hollywood. If all they have is Buffy and a Watcher probably isn't Giles, they have the first movie. A first movie which bombed to the point the creator barely acknowledges it. You also can't go Dark Knight with Buffy since she is a light in a world of emo darkness. Making her dark is the exact opposite of what the character represent.

Again, Buffy is a one note character. She is a female super-hero who sans trendy things, but all heroes nowadays say trendy things hell Stan Lee invited the damn thing with Spiderman in the sixties. Sarah did a great job with that character giving her a wide birth, but as we saw in the movie it can go to shit real quick with a bad actress in the role. The supporting cast is the core to Buffy, hell even the writers know that and have on many occasions pointed out if she didn't have a great supporting cast, she would be dead in the series or probably canceled.

Its not a bad idea to reboot Buffy, but not seven to eight years after its done and not while Joss is still writing stories, granted they are terrible stories for the most part, but he is still writing them. I am also curious to see how Dark Horse is going to handle this situation since they own the publishing rights to Buffy and Angel. I also think throwing some hot chick as the writer to say look it may have even more Girl Power is pretty much pandering at this point. I also don't know which of the Twilight or Disney kids factory is going to get this role, but I expect to be fully sheltered from the hate mail that will sadly come their way. Again, the fanbase is very vocal and without Joss or someone to appease it, you will see things turn ugly quick.

I don't think The Wrath of Khan needs to be rebooted, because it's a fantastic movie in and of itself. Definitely the best of the Trek films. I'm perfectly cool with Star Trek Into Darkness having a villain we haven't seen before.
