Be forewarned, fans of McDonald's fast food and/or nostalgia:

The "Shrek 3" tie-in green milkshake is **NOT** the same thing as the beloved Shamrock Shake from my youth.

It's mint chocolate. It's fine on its own merit, but it's a bit of a surprise if you expected a mouthful of your childhood.

I've never had a Shamrock Shake, what flavor is it? I always assumed it was mint-ish.

From your youth? Don't they still do the Shamrock Shake every year?

I haven't seen it since I was probably 12. Wikipedia claims you can get it in the Northeast U.S. in March but I haven't had any luck.

But yes, it was a tasty minty flavor.

Shamrock shake is mint vanilla, while the Shrek tie in is mint chocolate.

The Shamrock Shake is still available throughout Maine for the two or three weeks leading up to St. Patrick's Day. Two of my kids love it. The other one throws up at the hint of mint. They tried out the Shrek Shake this weekend and were forewarded by me that it was NOT a Shamrock Shake. They still devoured it and gave it a thumbs up.

We still get it here in good ol' Ohio. The wife loves 'em.

I'm pretty sure we in Chicago have had the Shamrock Shake recently.

Strangely, we in Hawaii still get the Shamrock shake. Or at least we did last year.

Ditto Southern California. We're still getting Shamrock Shakes around St. Patty's Day.

I asked about this two years ago in San Diego when one McDonald's had the Shamrock Shake and the other did not.

The guy that I talked with told me that it was at the store manager's (he may have meant owner's though) discretion whether they were going to run they were going to participate in a special or run a food item. This explained why one McDonalds in San Diego always had the McRib year-round, and this particular McD never had the Shamrock Shake.

Ask your local McDonald's employee what's up.

//edit: We had the Shamrock shake here in March until the shake machine broke, so I only got one. The Shrek shake is OK but its more of a "Thin-mint" than a Shamrock shake.

Of course you could always ask for a shamrock shake instead of the Shrek, and they'll give it to you. (the mint is a mix-in, at least at my McDonalds)

Could you explain how that works? In my experience it comes from the nozzle as the flavor - no mixing in.
