Pretty much every big gun minus Punisher has been an Avenger for some stretch of time. I want to see Vision and Black Panther. I hate the Pyms and I hope Joss pulls one of his famous kill the lovers plot devices if they are in a sequel. I'd like to see Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver, but if they can't use the words mutant or bring up their origin then I'll pass. I really could careless about Ms.Marvel, Black Knight, Hercules and so on. There is a reason for a lot of years, the title Earth's Mightiest Heroes for Avengers was considered a pun.

Punisher
Scarlet Spider
Gorilla Man
Ghost Rider
Beta Ray Bill
Adam Warlock
Cloak & Dagger (this is two people)
Cyclops
Silver Surfer
Nick Fury

Note that Jean Grey, currently dead in Marvel Continuity, has also never been an Avenger. Nor have Charles Xavier or Magneto. Speaking of whom...

What does this mean? If Wanda and Pietro are in A2 but aren't acknowledged as mutant children of Magneto, you won't see the movie?

Maybe. Ok, probably not. Witch and Quicksilver being mutants and on top of being Magneto's kids is a giant deal on why they are Avengers. Its seen as a big step between human and mutants relations. If they just show up like they did in Ultimates with no real backstory then it devalues the character. If they can't be called mutants then don't use them. And if they do use the Ultimate versions, they are a little too Jamie and Cersie Lannister for my taste.

Honestly, I would have been ten times happier had the Big Bad behind Loki been revealed to be The Red Skull. I was hoping he would appear, somehow also surviving in the cosmos as Loki did.

The conversation about who has not been an Avenger reminds me of the bit from Patton Oswalt about Jesus not really having much in the way of super powers:

“Try the Avengers, they’ll take anyone. Hey, they have a guy with a bow and arrow, I’m not kiddding. What, are they recruiting at sporting goods stores?
‘Hey, you jump rope really fast, how would you like to be an Avenger?’
‘I like the way you tether ball, sir. How would you like to take on ULTRON?’”

Bringing in Pym is a natural way of then bringing in Ultron as the villain for the following movie. Though, you could just simplify by having Ultron be a Stark reaction that gets out of control. Isn't Marvel making an Ant-Man film anyway, or is that another hero as Ant-Man and not Pym?

Even if Henry Pym isn't a character, Wasp is a must. Talk about a character that's right in Joss Whedon's wheelhouse. Imagine basically Cordelia (Angel-era, or S3 of Buffy-era) except with superpowers.

In the past year or so, Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan have been retconned into putting together the first 50s/60s team of "Avengers". Along with Dominic Fortune, Bloodstone, Namora, Sabretooth and umm... one or two others whom I forget. Happened in "New Avengers".

During the wide "Avengers: Initiative" arc, there were three "Scarlet Spiders" on the team, who used the "Iron Spidey" suits. So, technically, 3 guys named Scarlet Spider were Avengers via the Initiative.

"The Initiative" makes it tough to score everyone who has or hasn't been an Avenger. There was a core cast in that title, but there were also a lot of off-screen players.

Maybe take Fury and Scarlet Spider off the list and swap in "Colossus" and "Bucky"?

The Official Marvel Movie Timeline (bitcast-a-sm.bitgravity.com) leading up to The Avengers - and it's a doozy.

Apparently, according to movie continuity, Iron Man 2, Thor and The Incredible Hulk all took place IN THE SAME WEEK.

WHAT?

I've recently read the first 21 issues of The Avengers from the 1960s. Around issue 15, Iron Man, Thor, Giant Man and Wasp all decide being an Avenger is tiring work and they all decide to take a leave of absence. Captain America was the last to find out that all of a sudden, his buddies were all leaving the team until further notice and he was suddenly in charge of a new, much, much less powerful team comprised of Hawkeye, Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver. Basically, the bar was lowered then and that low bar has been a staple of Avengers recruiting ever since.

I think the problem with the Avenger and JLA books is when they try to use them to put over the C and D listers. Avengers is much more guilty of this though.

Um...movie forum. They need to make Hank Pym work cause with him you get Ultron and Vision.

Now that you mention it, that makes sense.
at the end if IM2, Coulson spots the hammer and then you have the Thor events happening in 2-3 days time.
So those two can easily happen in the same week.

And from there it's only a small step to assume that if they had access to Thor to help out, SHIELD would've asked him to assist with the Hulk situation.
Or even Widow for that matter (who was occupied in IM2) or Hawkeye (busy with Thor)

I assume more of this is explained in the 'Fury's big week' comic which is out now (tho I'm waiting for the TPB)

Interestingly enough, I was under the impression that they found Cap before any of the other heroes popped up. I guess not (or maybe they changed that?)

Yeah, Fury's big week covers all of this, and has some interesting behind the scenes stuff at shield. Also, there's one of those post credit sequences (IM2?) where Fury has a TV screen and it shows all the stuff going on.

Marvel's "One shot" series with Agent Coulsen gives a lead in to the Ross/Stark conversation. Check out "The Consultant" for that but also be sure to check out "A funny thing happened on the way to New Mexico"

They tried to explain this on an Agent Coulson one-shot "The Consultant" but it was kind of dumb. Basically they sent Tony Stark to do the opposite of recruiting Gen Ross since Tony Stark is annoying.

Any takers on the Marvel 2014 mystery movie? Would it be off base to maybe think it's a Hulk sequel? ... I just can't see Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, etc.

From a merchandise standpoint, another Hulk film makes a ton of sense ... case in point, I had to call/visit several Targets, Toys R Us, etc. to find an Avengers Hulk action figure for my son ... one employee told me that since the film came out, they can't keep Hulk merchandise in stock.

I would guess its Hulk or Ant Man. Dr. Strange would be a good option with Thanos considering he is a bit of a bridge character for Infinity Gauntlet, but they pretty much asserted magic = Really Amazing OMG Tech in the Marvel films.

I hear the same thing about the Hulk, too. Disney stores are selling the figures and the Hulk is a giant scale to the other figures and he is tough to find.

Avengers XXX: A Porn Parody (newsarama.com) already. Vivid wasted no time. Haven't seen it but Newsarama has, and they approve!

Pros: They thankfully added a ton of female Avengers like Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Woman, and She-Hulk.

Cons: Chyna is She-Hulk. I mean, of course she would be. But still. Yeech.

They signed Ruffalo to a six picture deal and Hulk merch is second only to Spider-Man in Marvel sales.

Really aren't any top tier characters left. Especially not someone that could carry their own movie.
