Personally, I really dislike the "Modern" style comics with the over-the-top violence and anti-heroes. I think Image Comics kicked off the violence trend. Call me nuts, but heroes should be heroes. They are meant to uphold a moral standard and be better than us. That's why they are heroes. I mentioned this over on the Authority thread a few months ago, but heroes don't kill, dismember or greiviously harm their opponents unless absolutely necessary. That's what makes the moment more dramatic. Superhumans who kill wantonly or are morally flawed in serious ways just ain't heroes to me. I like my heroes from the 60s and 70s vein I guess. Byrne's Fantastic Four for example...

In that same vein, do you want all your wrestlers to be Hogan-cut and dry Real American Heros? Or the Heelish-Cool Face ala Rock. There is a middle ground (RVD for example is far from a Hogan cartoony face, but isn't really heelish in his actions either).

I like my heros to be more human, have flaws and moral quandries. I think anything else is bordering on too unrealistic for me to really get deeply into. On the other hand, I've never bought uber-heel faces in comics. I've never liked guys who are good guys only because they fight the bad guys. There has to be a happy medium. Spiderman is a normal guy who just happens to have super powers which he uses to fight crime. He isn't any better than the Joe (or Jane) Cup of Coffee he's saving from the crooks, he's just more adept at doing it than they are. SuperMan's sickeningly sweet look at things is nice and provides a guidline for younger readers (Truth, Justice and the American Way!), but his "holier than thou" act wears a little thin. There's only so many times that Sups can save the day and uphold your freedom while being absolutely perfect thank you very much! before it becomes cliched. Batman is the perfect anti-hero hero. The man has some deep seeded issues and has trouble containing that, but in the end, he always comes through as the hero.

However, there IS still something about that campy 60s superhero that strikes a cord. Don't believe me? Play Freedom Force.

Until next time, Make Mine Marvel!

I agree with you. Continuity is good in some cases (we don't need a gay Peter Parker or something) but in others, it's just a ball and chain. For instance, when and if they introduce Venom to the Ultimate Spidey universe, many fans will scream and holler because they won't do the whole cosmic powers/black suit thingie. So what? Venom can be re-introduced another way. It looks like they are about to do something regarding the Phoenix Saga in Ultimate X-Men, but I'm sure it will play out differently.
But by the same token, I don't like some of the liberties that have been taken, such as Kraven as a Crocodile-Hunter-ish Australian reality show host. Ugh.

I don't care about continuity to the original stories here. If you notice, most people's back stories are subtly different from the 'norm' in the Marvel Universe. And while I think having Kraven become the Croc-Hunter was a stupid move, as Kraven was actually a pretty cool character, I'll respect them (the writers) for doing what it is they want to do with the story. No, what I care about is the continutiy within the Marvel Ultimate Universe. If the Hulk manages to destroy half of New York, you may think that Spider-Man may have noticed eh? And while this may have been the norm for a while, when I was into comics it was never the norm. So this is what I like.

Captain America: "Don't worry Dr. Banner, we aren't going to hurt you. We're just going to get you some medical treatment for your injuries, like that gash on your cheek."

Bruce Banner: "I... I don't have a gash on my cheek...."

*WHAM!*

Captain America: "You do now, son."

Ultimate Venom will be introduced later this year (December-ish, I think) and apparently readers will be "shocked" by the connection between Venom and Peter's dad.

In related news, and in response to something posted earlier in this thread (I think), The Ultimate X-men vs. The Ultimates will be a 4 issue mini-series (By the regular UX-Men team) starting later this year as well.

Speaking to the whole continuity issue in the Ultimate universe vs. the normal Marvel universe... Wasn't Ultimate Marvel Team-Up in continuity? If so, how do you explain the two completely different Nick Furies, and the different Iron Men?

I just want to go on record as being for Kraven the Croc Hunter. Seeing as the Ultimate Universe is a modernized version of the Marvel Universe, it makes sense to make Sergei Kravinov a regular on Animal Planet.

Besides, the only time Kraven because even remotely cool to me was the Last Hunt storyline. And he killed himself after that! Now we have to deal with his good guy son and Chameloen going from morphing Russian super-spy to becoming Kraven's sniveling half brother. Not an even trade off in my opinion.

Morrison has made the X-Men unreadable. He does not deserve to write for any mainstream comic.

Come on, Hulk's testosterone overload would make him act like that. And certainly the winsome Wasp was always "distracting", maybe not as obvious as say, Black Widow or the Enchantress, but come on, this is comics.

I'd say Ultimate Cap's gung-ho yet slightly naive personality fits him perfectly.

Tony going from Shannon Elizabeth in zero gravity to probably the best Iron Man armor design in years is also great.

And I'll say that Morrison and Claremont's X-books have kept the franchise alive.

Have to agree with you on all points, darkdragoon. The Ultimates is bar-none my favorite book since McFarlane's Spider-man, and I was a huge fan of that series.
About Thor - would you rather have the old Thor, Skorpio? A muscled goof in a silver winged hat with fur panties?
The new Thor kicks all ass. When he debuted in Ultimates #6, I was literally cheering.

Yeah, at first I was really concerned about the new Thor until they showed him in action.

Also, what happened to Dr. Strange? Wasn't he going to be in Ultimate Team-Up or something like that?

Strange was in the late Ultimate Marvel Team- up with Spidey, in my LEAST favorite books of that series art-wise...
I love the Ultimate Universe, only because the normal Marvel-universe has become far too cluttered to be innovative, If you are not an X-Man, an Avenger, Spider-man, or one of the Fantastic 4, you are nothing. I am still pissed at the Deadpool cancellation. Now we get a fresh start with characters that are not so hopelessly ancient constantly outshining the "younger talent," so to speak. It ia all new! I am curiousl to see what they do with "Ultimate Adventures..."

Having the same problem at UT here. Got 7 or 8 e-mails being bounced back to me - both of which were headed to AOL accounts I hadn't heard of. Chances are someone I knew last year picked up a virus, as what's been said.
