Marvel's MMO "Marvel Universe" got some details released today. And those details are that the game will NOT carry a monthly fee! Score!

Marvel Universe details revealed

The first official details about Marvel Universe were revealed at Gazillion-held event in San Francisco. (via PC Gamer)

Developed by Secret Identity, a team assembled specifically to make the MMO, Marvel Universe will be free-to-play. The game's primary antagonist (at least at launch) will be Dr. Doom, and players will be able to play as famous Marvel heroes, including "Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Hulk, Thor, Spiderman, Nova, and Squirrel Girl."

Marvel fans will also be pleased to note that veteran comic writer Brian Michael Bendis is doing some writing for the game, and that some of the game's story missions are taken from the comics themselves.

My head just exploded! So much awesome here!

-I can play as the heroes!
-I don't have to pay a monthly fee. I'd imagine there's a $50 retail price tag, but nothing beyond that.
-Bendis is writing! I'm hoping we get Good Bendis (Ultimate Spider-Man; Daredevil) and not Bad Bendis (Secret Invasion; Anything he did with The Hood).
-Holy crap, I CAN PLAY AS SQUIRREL GIRL!!!

I wanted in on DCU Online badly, but ultimately got turned off by the monthly fee (there's bills to be paid!), so I'm definitely in on Marvel Universe! Can't wait for...uh...no release date yet, but I can't wait!

All it needs now is some more Cosmic Marvel, but I'm sure that'll come later. Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet NEEDS to become playable!

If they are forgoing the monthly fee, it could be microtransactional, which means you could be spending just as much (if not more) for stuff than you would if there was a subscription.

That's my guess. Web shooter fluid isn't free you know. Neither are Hawkeye's arrows. You'll prpbably end up having to buy new costumes as well.

Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.

Or;

- Pay for bonus mission packs.
- Pay for certain upgrades that will take much longer in-game.
- Unlock novelty powers and costumes.
- Purchase certain characters, especially popular ones.
- XP boost items.

Runes of Magic did this thing where they ramped up the difficulty so you HAD to use the cash shop to play anything near the end-game.

Sorry, unless they use the same approach of Guild Wars I'm not too thrilled with this.

How would this even work?? Everyone is gonna want to be Spider-Man and Wolverine. So are there gonna be 500 Spideys running around? If not, then you are gonna log on and get stuck playing as Dazzler because everyone else is taken.

How would hero selection work? Is it first come frist serve or will they have 100 Wolverines running around?

Dont say its not worth it, when you can sleep with no fear, that kind of time is worth any thing.- FFX

I'd imagine there's going to be a quota set, as in "One Spider-Man or Wolverine per mission" type of deal. It'll be first-come, first-serve amongst your party.

Personally, this won't be a problem for me, since I'll probably be running around as Doctor Strange.

Yeah, but even characters like Doctor Strange will get taken with thousands of players in the mix. Unless they have hundreds of games going at once that only allow like 10 or so players.
