When I lived in Tampa, he seemed to be at every single fandom convention that was held there. He was always super nice and would happily draw you something without even charging, unlike most artists today. I have a Alan Scott picture he did for me that I had colored by Ethan Van Sciver, of all people. This was in 2003 I think when Van Sciver was doing fill in issues of NEW X-MEN. I really hated his work on that book, but the two of them were sitting at the same table next to each other and I didn't want to embarass the guy by telling him I thought his work sucked.

This is kinda funny now because Van Sciver's work on GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH is fucking great.

It seems odd that someone so familiar with the DC SIlver Age characters hadn't read New Frontier until now. There's also a New Frontier one-shot solicited this month that will come out at the same time as the DVD.
