| #2 Posted on 27.8.08 1116.10 | Instant Rating: 10.00 | That was one of a number of songs I had playing in my head this morning.
This is all very strange timing, what with him signing a contract extension in June. He's claiming he decided to leave the paper when he realized most of the people covering the Olympics were writing for websites. Which may actually be right, but most of those people were writing for websites in addition to newspapers - just like Jay was for the Sun-Times - and they weren't being flown to Beijing by a dot com alone.
Which kinda gives me my guess at what happened here - Jay has a deal in hand with a website, figures the Sun Times is a sinking ship (which it is) and he's a big enough star to get a columnist gig if the web thing doesn't work out (which, maybe not) and sticks around with the Sun Times just long enough to get one more Olympics trip before skedaddling. No way he doesn't already have a deal done with someone before leaving the paper, but no way can he admit it for contractual and critical considerations.
Edit: OMG, I take back every bad word I've ever said about the SunTimes. Greatness.

Amazing how many people have used that phrase today.
Anyone watch ATH today to see if he was on?
Edit: This is too great not to post. From the actual Sun-Times Press Release about Mariotti leaving.

The Chicago Sun-Times and suntimes.com will continue to have the scores and the stories before anyone else, anywhere, and the deepest and most comprehensive stats and standings. We wish Jay well and will miss him -- not personally, of course -- but in the sense of noticing he is no longer here, at least for a few days.

Someone needs to make a batch of "Just Another Victim" shirts that are Ebertized and hand them out to Gallo, Schneider, and Mariotti... though I have a feeling Jay won't make nice like the other guys and find the shirt funny some day.
Just J, not Johnny.
And not so Angry.

1. There was success of either the FB or BKB teams, then he would write some fanboy columns for a couple days before going back to the schtick, or...
2. He would actually be caught by the Illinois radio crew AT A GAME, when he would practically bubble up with enthusiasm and love for all things Illini.
In the end he's the typical semi-untouchable bully-coward every major city media has for some reason. Soon, he'll be one of the internet versions of same.

This is why I find it odd that *anyone* liked reading his stuff because he would do this for every team that he covered. He was always on top of what was going on, but he always did so with a preconceived I-told-you-so and that-doesn't-impress-Jay-Mariotti attitude that was always so formulaic and repetitive that he could have used the same template and did a CTRL+ and replaced *whatever* with Bears/Cubs/Sox/Illini/Bulls/etc.

You should see his exchange with robber baron Lord Conrad Black, the former CEO of the Sun-Times parent company who got 78 months from the Feds for diverting funds and obstructing the investigation.
