Sounds like this was done at the last second, and the Pirates ended up with a truck load of prospects.

Pirates and Red Sox were close to a deal earlier in the day with the Marlins and may have thought they had a pretty solid deal, but the Marlins decided to hold the deal up for some extra millions of dollars. And so they end up with nothing.

Luckily for all us hoping for a frantic deadline deal, the Dodgers are here to be silly - how many outfielders do they have now? How many millions of money are they investing in their 4th and 5th guys?

Way to go, ESPN! I have to link to USA Today (usatoday.com) instead!

EDIT: NOW they have a scrap of a story (sports.espn.go.com). I think "ESPN.com has learned" means "by visiting the USA Today website"

Actually si.com seemed to be the very first on this story, breaking it right about 3PM.

In that shitty division this certainly gives the Dodgers a fighting chance.

I think SI had it first, but I was waiting around for a list of who was officially involved - here's one - since only Manny and Bay were mentioned at first.

BOS gets:
PIT OF Bay

LAA gets
BOS OF Ramirez (and team agrees to decline '09 and '10 options)

PIT gets:
BOS SP Craig Hansen
BOS OF Brandon Moss
LAD 3B Andy LaRoche
LAD RP Bryan Morris

The Dodgers now have OFs
Juan Pierre
Andruw Jones
Matt Kemp
Andre Ethier
Delwyn Young (DL)
Manny Ramirez

Joe Torre managing Manny Ramirez....seems odd.

Anyway, LA's outfield problem really isn't a problem given that Jones and Pierre suck. Manny, Kemp, Ethier every day, keep the other two as backups and there's no problem. The Dodgers needed a big bat and now they have to be considered the favorites in the weak NL West.

As a Jays fan, it is going to hurt seeing Canadian Bay on the Red Sox.

How is it that I am a good actor? What I do is I... pretend to be the person Im portraying. Youre confused. Case in point: in Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson comes to me and says I would like you to be Gandalf the Wizard, and I said You are aware that I am not really a wizard? and Peter Jackson said I would like you to use your acting skills to portray a wizard for the duration of the show. So I said Okay and then I said to myself Mmm.. How do I do that? And this is what I did: I imagined that I was a wizard, and then I pretended, and acted, in that way on the stage. How did I know what to say? The words were written down for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? People told me where to stand." -- Sir Ian McKellen, Extras

According to ESPN, a story doesn't happen until they break the news.

They are more centric than Ptolemic scholars.

Wow, thanks Pittsburgh for allowing the Yankees, Red Sox and Dodgers to get whoever they want. I mean those teams were struggling to get anybody, they hardly ever get anybody they want.

What is the word on the younger Laroche these days? I know he was a highly touted prospect but it seems he hasn't been that impressive during his short time in the Majors.

Whaaaaa? Well...that was unexpected. And very pleasing. After years of getting guys like Old Greg Maddux, Injury-Prone Jason Schmidt, Useless Andruw Jones, "Superstar" Casey Blake, this is the most high-profile acquisition the Dodgers have had in YEARS! And it's one that counts, because Manny can put this team over the top in the NL.

And here's the best part. Manny can screw around in the outfield. He can leisurely stroll to first base. He can only hit five home runs the rest of the season. But the thing is...all of that would STILL make him a vast improvement over Andruw Jones. There IS no downside to this deal for the Dodgers!

Screw Cubs/White Sox! Dodgers/Angels World Series now, baby!

Theo trades a 36-year old headache who can rake (2008 OPS+ = 140) for a soon-to-be 30-year old who can also rake (2008 OPS+ = 135), for the cost of two spare parts. ("Spare parts" to Boston - Moss and Hansen were entirely expendable.) I can't imagine Bay costing 75% of Manny's contract, either.

If Jason Bay can handle playing in Boston, this is an incredible move for the Red Sox, I think.

At least now the Dodgers can say they spent $36 million on Andruw Jones AND a half year of Manny Ramirez.

This trade is the best thing to ever happen to the Diamondbacks postseason chances.

I can't wait until Vin Scully has to explain Manny being Manny.
The Red Sox never won without Ramirez, they won 2 World Series with him, so I'll appreciate that. But, if he was going to pull another Operation ShutDown, then they might as well get someone to play left field for '09. Bullpen still sucks; but at least Hansen is gone, the bottom of the order still sucks, and the first at bat that Jason Bay has for the Red Sox will be the biggest at bat of his career. I think they passed the over/under on when they'd dump Manny a few years ago.
Also, sources have told ESPN that Japan has bombed Pearl Harbor.
Could the Pirates at least pretend to try one of these years. I mean, even Tampa has made a run this year. And, does anyone on the face of the Earth understand what the Astros are trying to do?

Actually, the best part of this deal is that the Red Sox are supposedly picking up the tab on Manny for the rest of this season and the options for the next two years are scrapped. So even if Manny turns out to be a huge pain in the ass for the rest of the year, the Dodgers can just let him wander to Free Agency Land after 2008 with a minimal loss.

If only getting rid of Andruw Jones could be that easy.

I was at the Dodger game today. The "Manny! Manny!" chants were THUNDEROUS. It's just a matter of time before Dodger caps with fake dreadlocks go on sale.

Now Manny is saying he wants to finish his career in L.A. PLEASE let this happen, even if it means I have to pay 20 bucks for a Dodger Dog next season.

I'm already paying more money for parking than I am for a pair of tickets. Let's not encourage them to hike up prices even more.

I just don't want Manny to wear out his welcome like he did in Boston, because he's got a good thing out here in L.A. And I haven't seen this much fan-interest in the Dodgers in a long time. Who knows? Maybe Dodger fans will stop leaving in the 7th inning. Maybe.

Unfortunately you are absolutely right.

I realized the Pirates were forever doomed when they built PNC Park, then had record attendance for 3 years straight, and then Pirate management came out and said the team lost 30 million dollars over that time period.
