Right, he's not playing for LaRussa.

I'm still a fan, but I can no longer criticize other fan bases. McGwire was dirty, but we cheered Sosa in Chicago. At this point about the only big names I tend to think were clean are Griffey, Frank Thomas and Maddux. And they're *still not testing for HGH. I think this is going to open the Hall of Fame to users, because it's obviously been pervasive for the era.
Everyone who's ever been caught has an excuse. It's something in a supplement that wasn't labelled right, wasn't disclosed by my doctor...
Honest... I ran out of gas. I, I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts! IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!!!
And for all the heat MLB gets, the NFL is worse - it's just ignored there. Four game suspensions you read about in the agate type.
Obviously the penalties are not stiff enough to discourage juicing, and the potential rewards.

What a horrible columm. Am I really supposed to believe his 6-year-old son had that extensive of a conversation about baseball? And if it's not meant to be taken literally, why use the metaphor of a conversation with his son to make whatever stupid point he's trying to make this time? God, I wish I hadn't wasted my time reading that. | thecubsfan

No. The first line says it takes place in 2014, it's a what if.
That said, it's definitely a column which did not benefit from only having a few hours turnaround. Given some time to think about it, I would hope someone would've pointed out how forced the whole setting is, but I think he was desperate for a different way to say the same things that have been said by everyone for a while. It's a miss.

I thought the same thing, but here's how it begins.

My son and I have flown from California to spend the week in Boston. He is a little more than 6½ at this point.
Wikipedia says the son was born November of 2007. I don't know why he didn't go farther into the future, because I agree it doesn't make any sense. | EddieBurkett

I personally enjoyed the column and was more than willing to overlook the plausibility of a 6 year old engaging in this debate. The point stands that as a Sox fan, he's going to revere Manny regardless of his cheating, and he's going to have to explain that to his son one day, possibly when his son is 6 or maybe 16 or some other age.

Yeah, I understand it's hypothetical, but my question remains. Being a hypothetical doesn't justify it being nonsensical and requiring suspension of disbelief on my part. | Whitebacon

2014 puts them conveniently in the middle of the 10th anniversary of the 2004 World Series championship season, the first one since 98. | | Pages: Prev 1 2
