The referee not being told the finish would have tipped the hat anyway, wouldn't it have? Why not just tell him so he can assist and make it go as planned? Not sure if I buy it, but saying nothing is saying everything pretty much.

But I guess only 3/4 people really knew. 5/6 if you count the HHH/Steph.

That's what I read. Though I bet they don't generally know any more than what's on the format sheet (or less!)

I wonder if this was done to avoid it getting spoiled, even if only implicitly by the betting odds changing. But, even though only 5-6 people knew (Meltzer guessing the same number you are), the odds still started to shift before the match.

I just rewatched Taker vs Lesnar. It's really obvious Taker got his bell rung and maybe started pulling some of it together in the final third of the match.

Brock really tried to hold the match together, exposing himself numerous times and Taker just never clued in. The match really needed a Terry Funk saving run in, but who runs in to save Undertaker? The announcers could tell something was up too. Funny how you can miss it when it's live, but Taker's face and eyes make it plain as day.

Brock's final F-5 really got lost in all of this. The way he reversed the Tombstone and muscled Taker into an F-5 was very impressive.

The crowd reaction at the end is still great, it's just too bad Taker got hurt early, but that has been the biggest fear going into these matches for years.

Heyman had to know. He dives into the ring the second the count is done, which I can't imagine he'd do if he was completely taken off guard by the finish. He's also the one guy out of the people who I would have assumed had to know (Heyman, Cole, Patton, Dunn) who wouldn't have an earpiece in and would have had to be told before they came out for the match.

I can buy Patton not knowing before the match, but I can't imagine either he or Cole not getting the call from Vince in their ear with at least some warning to make sure they didn't try to cover up thinking Taker missed his spot. I don't know, I guess we'd have to go back and watch other Chad Patton matches to see what his normal call for the bell is (he immediately pops up and throws both hands up and does kind of a wave for this finish, where I know other refs sometimes do the umpire punchout move), but if I'm a referee and don't know the one guy who never loses is going to lose the one match he can't lose, my first reaction after he doesn't get the shoulder up would be complete panic, not "Well, I guess that was it, then!"

There's something heartwarming, though, if they really did "work the boys" about the most important finish of any match on the most important card of the rest of the company's history. To quote a great man, "THIS BUSINESS!"

What would impress me even more would be if they kept it a secret from Brock.

Only two booking things I'd change about the show to make it absolutely perfect: Wyatt doesn't get Sister Abigail meaning Cena's doesn't have to kick out of it; and Cena wins on a roll-up rather than the AA. On this particular card I don't have a problem with him going over, but those two changes would have preserved the program in much better fashion.

Allegedly, Lawler sort of gave away the outcome, so it seems likely the announcers knew.

The editor added a note that it was "I do not envy the official in the this match" and I remember hearing that when I watched it on the Network.

I also rewatched it last night. My internet went out during this match on the live broadcast, and quite frankly, I wasn't really paying attention to the slow-paced match to begin with.

From the looks of things, Taker got knocked out on either the bump to the floor or the bump into the barricade. There wasn't anything before that that had any real impact on his head, and after that he was VERY slow and loopy. This obviously impacted the story they were trying to tell with the match. (I think there was one sequence where Brock was dealing shots to the body and Taker's arms are just hanging at his sides, not even trying to block.)

What I'm left wondering is whether or not that third F5 was supposed to be the finish. Yes, Brock was supposed to win, but it looked like no one was ready for it to happen right then. Maybe he was supposed to deliver four or five F5s and Taker just didn't (or couldn't) kick out at that moment.

The eeriest part for me was Taker lying there lifeless for several minutes after the pin.

It is kinda sad how, after all these years of making improbable comebacks, racking up a 21-0 WrestleMania streak, that Undertaker's first loss comes during a match in which he looked like a slow, plodding, old man.

It was the Rocky V of wrestling matches.

I believe the point of these shows is (or was) that it was catered toward the younger crowd who can't stay up late enough for RAW. Since it's on Saturday Morning's (at least where I am), it is around the time that kids watch their cartoons and whatnot.
