No Halo for 2003 (gamespot.com)

Well, that about does it. I've been on the fence about getting rid of my 'box for a while now, but that seems to have clinched it.

For as powerful as this system is, it's starting to look more and more like unrealized potential. I'm starting to see fewer and fewer reasons why I should hang onto the thing.

Halo's pushed back until next year, EA's not supporting Xbox Live, Ninja Gaiden's been delayed again, there's no GTA love until at least 2005, and Lord knows when this Fable game will be released.

For all of the money Microsoft has, you'd think they'd be able to snatch up a exclusive or two, but they can't even seem to get that right.

So I need your advice Wieners: do I scratch the Xbox experiment, and pick up a PS2, or do I hold onto it with the hope that it will get better soon (and buy a PS2 anyway)?

Funny, I just got back from trading in my Xbox and I hadn't even heard this news. I definately recommend trading it in for either a PS2 or a GameCube. I used the money from mine to get a bunch of GBA and GameCube games. ^_^;;

Personally, I have a PS2 and have loved every minute of it.

And this is coming from a person who has played 16 man Halo.
I'm really not looking toward the online stuff, so I don't hold that against any of the systems. I think the next-gen consoles will definitely be weighed by their online capabilities, but not these.

PS2 has a greater library, more third party developers, and a larger installed fan base. X-Box is a powerful machine, but I've always thought that if I wanted to play shooter games with real people, I'll just stick with my Counterstrike and my computer.

So, instead of me rambling, I'll just throw my hat in and say trade it in for a PS2. When Halo 2 comes out, rent it and play it on a friends. :)

Honestly, I can think of exactly one Xbox game that (a) I'd like to play and (b) I can't play (or play something similar) on my PS2 or PC -- Panzer Dragoon Orta. That's it. I have Morrowind on PC, Splinter Cell is on both, and if I really want Shenmue II that badly I'll get it for my Dreamcast.

On the PS2, I have GTA3, GTA: Vice, Virtua Fighter 4, Tekken 4, a major RPG lineup (Kingdom Hearts, Wild Arms 3, Suikoden III, Legaia 2, FF X, Xenosaga, Dark Cloud 2, with Star Ocean 3 coming by end-of-year), Frequency, Rez, the new Tenchu and Stuntman to play, and (AFAIK) only the GTAs are on PC.

I'm not a big fan of the traditional Nintendo franchises (Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Pokemon, Waverace, F-Zero, Smash Bros., Starfox, etc.), I have Skies of Arcadia for the DC and a plethora of Resident Evil games for DC and PS1, so I'm in no hurry to get a GameCube. When the price drops further, I might pick one up for Eternal Darkness. If you feel differently about Nintendo's franchise games, the Cube might be a good option, though Sega pulling the plug on its Cube sports lineup is a very bad sign.

My problem with my X-box isn't the lack of exclusive titles but how many titles that are on the other systems that I can't get.
EA NCAA 2003 for example, why wasn't this released on Xbox?
The FF series?
GTA?
Can someone explain why these non-inhouse titles don't come out for all systems? It would seem like an easy wayt to get more money for the makers.

The X-Box isn't getting Final Fantasy games because they're not in a good enough position with Square, I'd guess. Neither was Nintendo until not too long ago.

Though FFX-2 is still a PS2 exclusive, which in many ways makes me glad I don't have a Cube (for which the only game I'd consider buying is AC, though I'm looking forward to Zelda) or a Cube (no intrest really at the moment).

I really enjoy my X-box. I really hate this news. Good thing there are other games coming out that I am interested in. I really hope Brute Force is good, but it's wait and see right now.

Sony has purchased exclusive console rights to the GTA series and to the main FF series. (The FF game coming to the Cube later this year, FF Crystal Chronicle, is more of an offshoot than a direct descendant. Don't expect to see FF VII, VIII, IX, etc. on the Cube any time soon.)

The reason is obvious; most people make their console-buying decisions based on exclusives, and high-profile titles like that mean money in Sony's pocket and NOT in Microsoft's or Nintendo's. They've spent money up front to win the console war in the long run, and it's hard to argue with success.

I love my little xbox to bits. Sure theres games out on other systems that I'd quite like, but theres easy enough out there to keep me amused at present.

Whenever I go round to a mates who's got a PS2 I cant help but feel that everything just a bit less polished than on the xbox. I guess its just a matter of personal preference. If you would rather have a larger catalogue of games and you aint happy, then you should trade it in tomorrow.

I have all 3 systems, but I use the XBox the most. Why? I'm a hardcore sports gamer, and I love the harddrive to bits, even if the Box has been pissy for the last week, and probably will continue to be until I get some more compressed air.

I'm a big sports gamer too, which is why I got a Xbox in the first place-the hard drive, and Xbox Live. But the damn thing crashed on me FOUR times over the weekend for no apparent reason. Can't Microsoft make ANYTHING that doesn't crash every five minutes?

I assume you're talking about NCAA Basketball. For some strange reason, EA signed that as a PS2 exclusive while keeping all of their other properties available for all systems.

Speaking of EA, since XBox Live has clearly been a success, does anybody know if they're planning on supporting it for their next season of games?

Square's stance has always been to support the platform with the largest user base. That's why they've only supported Playstation and Playstation 2, and probably goes as far as NES and SNES. The only reason why they've decided to develop for the Gamecube is because they want to release their Final Fantasy ports to the Game Boy Advance, but Nintendo wouldn't allow them to unless they developed for the Cube. Square put their games on the Wonderswan but that has a fraction of the user base that GBA had, so Square relented.

I would be reluctant to get rid of any system I have. Even if nothing is out there I want at the moment, I would hold off. I'd say to do a little more research into the existing software lineup. For Xbox, that's over 200 games at this time. A lot of them are cheap now and well worth the money. If you're really fixing for a GTA experience, there is a multiplatform game called True Crimes. It is like a mix of GTA and Shenmue. Gunplay and hand to hand combat with all the freedom of both. Microsoft is doing all it can to score more exclusives, plus dealing with EA to get their games online. EA recently posted losses associated with its huge online infrastructure, so it may be more incentive for them to jump on the Xbox Live bandwagon. If I had broadband right now, I'd now I'd be enjoying online fighting bliss with Capcom vs SNK 2.
