Finally. ESPNNews is reporting Maddux will sign a 3 year, 24 million dollar deal pending passing a physical.

About freakin' time. I think this makes the Cubs' pitching staff the scariest in the NL (Prior and Wood are givens, Maddux still has 12-15 wins in the tank and he always pitched well at Wrigley, and he'll help Zambrano/Clement/Cruz along.) I may be partisan, but the Cubs won the Central with less last year and the division looks a bit weaker despite Clemens coming over to the Astros.

EDIT: Yahoo.com says 2 years, 15 mil. Either way, he's a Cub again. Welcome home.

Let's hope its for two years and not for three guaranteed.

Before Kerry Woods becomes a given, could he maybe win at least 15 games in a season?

You forgot that Pettite also went over to the Astro's. It will probably be a fight between the Cubs and Astros for the division and the losing team getting the NL wildcard.

Andy Pettite won't have Yankee Stadium to help hold balls in the park this year. Pettite is going to get rocked at Minute Maid Park, the place is a lot like a soft ball field. He does have big game experience which will mean a lot if they can get to the post season.

I think the Cubs will take the division rather easily this year.

Spoken like a true red sox fan. Pettite will do just fine, his cut fastball runs away from right handed hitters, and wont be pulled over that rediculously short left field fence. I think the thing that will put the cubs over the hump though, is thier manager. Dusty is probably the best in the game over the past few seasons.

I heard Maddux was going to the Yankees as late as yesterday afternoon. Glad to hear the Yanks can't put there claws into yet another player.

Maddux to the Yankees never made any sense. He never wanted to pitch in the American League...

Liberals sometimes claim to believe in personal freedom, but their concept of liberty seems limited to matters related to sex....Yet outside the sexual realm, liberals are downright illiberal. They want to control every aspect of our lives: what we eat, what we smoke, what we drive, how we defend our homes and families, how much of our own money we're allowed to keep.

Jayson Stark said that ten years ago Maddux could've made double what the Braves were offering and go the Yankees, but didn't. Not enough golf courses in the Bronx, I guess.

From what I read, it is 2 year's guaranteed, with the 3rd year becoming gauranteed based on the number of innings pitched in 2005. So, if he starts to tail off, the Cubs are off the hook.

I eventually saw the same thing. I'm glad that it is set up like that. We're in the last year of Moises' deal, so that'll free up at least nine million for the next offseason, maybe we can put in a legit push to get Beltran. Unless of course, the Yankees feel like they need him, too.

The offers I've read claim $28M from the Braves, and $33M from the Yankees, over the same number of years.

Not quite double, by my math.

Also, there was the fact that the Yankees weren't quite at the level they are now in 1992/1993 as opposed to where the Braves were at the time and also Maddux had said that he didn't want to learn a new league's worth of hitters' tendencies.

Oooo, bitter bitter.

Before Pedro Martinez becomes a given, maybe he could pitch, say, a whole season without injuries....

I mean, if we're going to get stupid about it....

So 3 Cy Young awards don't make you a given? And Wood hasn't had an injury-free career himself either.

Not what I meant. Kerry Wood is a "given" as is Pedro. To say either isn't is silly.

The original quote from CubsWoo:"I think this makes the Cubs' pitching staff the scariest in the NL (Prior and Wood are givens, Maddux still has 12-15 wins in the tank and he always pitched well at Wrigley, and he'll help Zambrano/Clement/Cruz along.) "

You don't think batters find Kerry Wood scary to face? Have you ever watched a baseball game?

I didn't say that Wood wasn't scary. I was commenting on your apparent dismissal of Pedro, which you now say wasn't the case. And yes I've watched plenty of baseball games. I love how some people question someones intelligence or experience when they don't share a similar opinion.

IF we use his career as an indicator, that means Woods is a given to win 12-14 games. He's not a Prior (who if he avoids freak plays at second will win 22-24 games), and even at this stage of his career he's not a Maddux, who has been 15 wins no questions asked for 15 years.
As for Martinez, except for '01, he's been over Wood's career high in wins every year for the last decade. Does Kerry have the ability to be dominant? Yes. But before he is written as a given, could he actually put up W's?

Well, until one of them (pedro or wood) win a ring, they arent THAT "given".

At least Maddox has pitched in a few world series games, and going into post season, thats what I would want.

I'll remember that the next time you try to downgrade Brady's accomplishments. Do rings mean more in baseball than in football?

Roy Halladay, AJ Burnett AND BJ Ryan? Damn...if the Blue Jays had any other starters, a halfway-competent bullpen or any offense to speak of, I might consider them a threat to contend in the AL East.
