Frankly, if you wouldn't bruise anyone's ego, I'd throw him number two between Prior and Wood, to break up the heat. The change of speeds would be that much more effective, I think.
We still need a viable lead-off hitter.

Either way, the rotation would be among the best in baseball. Even without the addition, the top 4 of the rotation could stand up to pretty much any other top 4.

Houston/Chicago could be an absolute dogfight for the division title and wild card. Despite (if they get Maddux) their pitching staff taking on near-legendary quality, the Cubs still haven't addressed their need of more hitters besides Sosa. Todd Walker and Derrek Lee aren't exactly world-beaters. Patterson will be back, but who knows how he'll play after his major injury.

The Cubs' major problem is their lack of a leadoff hitter. I was really hoping they'd sign Luis Castillo to play second so he could lead off and they wouldn't be forced to shoehorn Patterson into that role. This year we're again looking at Grudz leading off, and we're praying that he can even sniff his numbers from last season. If he dies at the plate, Walker will probably get the AB's, which heavily comprises our defense up the middle. The signing of Derrek Lee was better than you think. Not only does he solidify our infield D (three potential Gold Glovers,) but he is also a young power hitter entering his prime. He topped 30 and 90 last season for the first time, and has the potential for 35-40 homers and 100+ RBI now that he's left the pitcher-friendly Pro Player Stadium (and if he hits towards the middle of the order, I think he may end up hitting second.) I know that Wrigley isn't the homer haven it once was, but it should be friendly to Lee's numbers this season.

If they end up signing Pudge, he'll probably hit second, and Lee will slot into the 5 hole. But I really know nothing.

| #7 Posted on 15.1.04 2319.21 | Instant Rating: 7.00 | Actually, Lee has some speed on the basepaths, too. He wouldn't be your prototypical 1 hitter, but he might be a decent fit. However, if I remember him from AA, he is fairly strikeout-prone... has that gotten any better?

I'm biased, because if you look around these boards I've said before Maddux is the greatest righthander in history. Age has taken it's toll yes, but Maddux has such a style where age doesn't make you drop massivly. Last year there was injuries and other things. Next year....Maddux will be Maddux. Not at the level where Wood and Prior are at, but definitly still great. He'll win 15 in style next year, especially if he goes back to the Cubs. And like it has been said....
Wood: Controlled HEAT
Maddux: Uncanny control with offspeed pitche
Prior: More controlled HEAT
Not a set I'd like to see in a regular season or post season series.

Thems some mighty big words right there. Greg Maddux is one of the finest pitchers ever, but there are a few names like Tom Seaver, Roger Clemens, Walter Johnson, Cy Young that I would rate higher than Greg Maddux if you're talking all-time.
