Wednesday night is wrestling night. Unfortunately, it's also live music night in my area and I elected to forgo the grappling arts in favor of experiencing some six string magic at a local bar.

However, three nights ago was a historic night, as it's Alberto El Patron's first match in Lucha Underground. He's in Dario Cueto's office, wanting to know who his first opponent will be. The boss offers up Ricky Mandel, who hasn't been seen since Pentagon Jr broke his arm a few weeks ago. El Patron wants Texano. Cueto promises he'll get him but he needs to warm up first, so he offers him a match against Famous B, who hasn't been seen since Pentagon Jr broke his arm a few weeks ago. El Patron reiterates that he wants Texano. Cueto rightly notes that that is a big match and he needs a couple of weeks to promote it. Cueto counter-offers a match with "El Hijo de Havoc". Patron has had enough and throws everything off of Dario Cueto's desk, insisting that he'll be facing Texano tonight. Cueto finally concedes, El Patron thanks him and walks out of the office. Cueto picks up a statue of a bull and gazes at it thoughtfully as we move into the temple proper.

Mariachi El Bronx has been replaced with Amandititita on musical duties. And no, I didn't suffer a seizure while typing her name.

Mils Muertes makes his entrance for the opening match, sans Catrina. He's facing Fenix in the rubber match of their series. Fenix comes out alone as well and Mils Muertes is motioning for him to hurry up as Fenix takes his time coming down the stairs. Muertes grows impatient and exists the ring, coming after him, but Fenix jumps off the stair railing and smashes Muertes face first into the floor via hurricanrana and the bell rings despite Fenix not having made it into the ring yet.

Fenix tries to throw Muertes into the ring but A Thousand Deaths blocks and back elbows Fenix in the mouth. He then kicks him in the head and tries to throw the smaller man back into the ring but Fenix backflips off of the apron and superkicks Muertes into the ring.

Fenix enters the ring with a massive springboard leg drop and goes for the cover but only gets two. Fenix tries to whip Muertes but Muertes holds onto the ropes. Fenix tries again with the same result, so Muertes grabs onto Fenix's arm and pummels him with short arm forearm smashes. Muertes gets a front mount and lays into Fenix with more forearms and punches, then picks him up and spikes him with a picture perfect DDT.

Knife-edge chop turns Fenix inside as the commentators note that Fenix is the only man to hold a one-on-one victory against Muertes. Mils picks Fenix up and drops him with a TKO. No Mark Mero reference from Striker. Fenix kicks out at two, so Muertes locks in a rear chinlock and drives his knee into Fenix's back. Fenix fights back with punches and hits the ropes only to run into a straight right hand from Muertes, who has one of the best looking punches in the business.

Catrina appears at the top of the steps and makes her way to ringside, carrying the stone from the rubble that buried Mils Muertes as a child. Muertes responds by draping Fenix across the middle rope and smashing him into the mat via forearm. Muertes tries to whip Fenix off but Fenix slides between his legs and catches him with a kick to the gut, followed by a running dropkick to the knee. Fenix then lands a running double stomp to the back of a kneeling Muertes, causing Muertes to roll to the floor to catch a breather.

This gives Fenix too much space, however, so he closes it by springboarding off the second rope from the inside, cartwheeling over the top rope onto Mils Muertes. Fenix sells a knee injury, however, and isn't able to capitalize. He climbs back up to the apron but Muertes yanks his feet out from under him, dropping him face first on the edge of the ring. Muertes then grabs him by the head and slams him face first into the apron not once, not twice, not three times, not even four times, but five times, until Fenix crumples to the floor.

Muertes runs as if to dive but Fenix hops up, somersaults into the ring, and catches Muertes with an RKOOUTTANOWHERE. Fast count from the referee who is afraid that Fenix might shit in his bag if he doesn't get the win here, but Muertes still manages to kick out.

Fenix drags Muertes over to the corner and kicks him across the chest for good measure, then goes to the top. Muertes is up immediately, however, and stops him short with a big uppercut. Muertes starts to walk away, almost as if he's stunned, but then turns around, runs up the turnbuckles and nails a CODEBREAKER FROM THE TOP ROPE! The match could be over now but Muertes opts to pick Fenix up by the throat and finish him with the flatliner for the easy one, two, three.

Afterward, Muertes motions for Catrina to come into the ring but she stops on the apron. He points to Fenix and orders her administer the lick of death, but she shakes her head no. Muertes grabs her by the throat and drags her over the top rope, shoving her down in the corner. Fenix grabs the stone, which Catrina dropped, and smashes it into Muertes face, stunning him long enough for Fenix to take him out with a spin kick.

Fenix helps Catrina to her feet and holds the ropes for her to leave, but Catrina has something else in mind and walks over to the prone Muertes. She grabs him by the mask but then drops his head and administers the lick of death from his belly button all the way up to his forehead. She then grabs Fenix and kisses him once more. Fenix leaves the ring in a stuper as Catrina stands tall above a fallen Mils Muertes.

After the break, we get an Undertaker quality hype video for Konnan. We see Konnan, walking in the rain, interspersed with quotes from Sun Tzu's Art of War and clips of the attack by Cage. Revenge is coming.

Ivelisse is in Dario Cueto's office, insisting that she should be the #1 contender since she beat Angelico last week. She's flanked by Angelico and Son of Havoc. Cueto points out that beating Angelico doesn't make you #1 contender for anything (except a shot at the King of the Douches title) and that she only won because Son of Havoc got involved. If Ivelisse wants to prove herself, she'll face Angelico again next week. Cueto wants to make sure there's no outside interference, so he's making Havoc the special guest referee. "I hope you can control your woman inside the ring as well as she controls you outside of it." Ivelisse grabs Havoc by the beard and drags him away. Angelico doesn't say a word and still comes off as a massive douche. Dario Cueto yells at him to shut the door on his way out, because he leaves it wide open, like a douche. Angelico would make a great member of The Authority.

Prince Puma is in the bowls of the temple, raining down hell on a heavy bag. Alberto El Patron shows up and tells him he's going to need to unleash that aggression against Cage. He suggests that Puma listen to his "master" because if he keeps the title, El Patron is coming for it next.

Big Ryck (with eye patch & cigar) is already in the ring for his match with Sexy Star where the winner gets a handicap match with The Crew. Great line from Striker: "We could hit you over the head with all this women's lib and equality stuff or you could just watch the wrestling."

The bell rings and Ryck asks Sexy to just lay down. She takes offense and shoves him, then lays in with forearms to the chest that he completely ignores. A kick to the knee finally gets his attention, followed by two more kicks. Dropkick causes Ryck to step back a few feet.

Sexy tries to whip Big Ryck into the ropes but he just stands there with the look of someone tired of dealing with their friend's two year old. He finally has enough and whips her into the corner, but catches a boot to the face when walking over to lecture her. That pisses Ryck off and he flexes his fist before charging the corner, only Sexy evades and goes to the top.

Flying crossbody actually takes Ryck down and Sexy tries a pin but gets thrown off. Sexy rolls out of the ring and Ryck yells at her to stay out, motioning for the crowd to be quiet when they start chanting for her. Sexy waits until 9 but then charges into the ring and bulldogs Ryck with her head in his stomach, then slaps him across the face. She tries to hit the ropes by Ryck grabs her by the hair and lifts her up for the uranage, holding her for quite some time before gently lowering her to the mat, placing his hands on her shoulders, and holding her in place for the pin.

The Crew immediately appear and while Ryck is distracted by Mr Cisco and Bael, Cortez Castro catches him from behind with the kendo stick. The Crew mob onto Big Ryck, stomping him into the corner. Sexy Star goes after Castro but he knees her in the face then slams her onto her back via hairpull. Sexy isn't done yet, though, leaping onto Mr Cisco's back. He throws her over his shoulder, then picks her back up only to be slapped, but as Sexy tries a charge, Cisco & Castro nail her with their 3D/Codebreaker finisher.

Cisco & Bael then slide to the outside and pull Ryck's arms behind him in the corner, yelling for Castro to jam the kendo stick into Ryck's other eye. Big Ryck manages to kick Castro on his way in, however, then yanks Bael & Cisco back into the ring. Double clothesline takes out Cortez Castro & Mr Cisco, while a big right hook sends Bael flying out of the ring. Ryck yanks the eye patch off, screaming in anger. He whips Cisco into the ropes and wants to decapitate him with a clothesline but Cisco holds on and takes a powder. As he's running to rejoin The Crew, Ryck launches the kendo stick after him, cracking it across his back. Ryck continues selling the bad eye as Striker notes he's owed a one-on-three matchup against The Crew.

It's time for the main event. Alberto El Patron is out first. He hops up on the announce desk to celebrate his first Lucha Underground match and we cut to a hype video for the AAA champion, talking about his father, Dos Caras, and the success El Patron has had around the world. He's come to Lucha Underground to conquer America on his own terms. He dares anyone to try to hold back Alberto El Patron.

Texano makes his entrance next, putting to rest my doubts that they would actually go forth with this match. I was half-expecting Mariachi El Loco to come out instead. Vampiro notes that this is the first match between these two on American soil.

Collar & elbow tie up and the muscle each other into the corner. Texano is slow to break but does so clean, as Vampiro notes their fathers did battle throughout their careers and the two kids saw each other in the locker room, though I doubt they spent much time hanging out as El Patron is 7 years older.

Standing side headlock By Texano. El Patron whips him off but Texano drops him with a shoulderblock and spits on him. Leapfrog from El Patron and then a hip toss. He scrambles after Texano, but the longest reigning AAA champion in history rolls out to the floor. (Fun Fact: Texano won the AAA championship from Mils Muertes. The previous longest reigning champion in AAA history was... Jeff Jarrett?)

Texano baits El Patron to the floor but immediately rolls back into the ring from the other side, punting Alberto as he follows. Texano stomps away, then chops the beshirted chest of El Patron. Side suplex drops El Patron but a corner charge is met with a back elbow. El Patron then surprises Texano with a hurricanrana and lands a springboard kick to the chest. Ten punches in the corner, then a snapmare into a basement dropkick gets two.

El Patron wants a back drop but gets kicked in the face instead. He gets the back drop over to the floor, however, then sets sail with a topé suicida into the aisle. Patron tries to whip Texano into the ringside barricade but it's reversed and Texano catches him with a DDT on the rebound.

Texano rolls in to break the count, then smashes El Patron into the ringpost before rolling him back in and cinching in a rear chinlock. Alberto punches out but gets whipped into the corner. Texano runs into a pair of boots to the face but a second rope dive from Patron is met with a dropkick to the gut, which is good for a two count.

Texano chokes El Patron in the ropes. A couple of asshats mistake this for WWE and try to start up a chant for the refree but are summarily ignored by the rest of the audience. Arm bar by Texano but Patron punches out. Texano stops that rally with an eye rake and a leg kick, however. He then slams El Patron shoulder first into the ring post, then wraps his arm around the post.

Texano takes too long climbing to the top, so Alberto regains his feet, runs over, and.. punches him in the ankle. That was weird... but effective. Superplex finally stops Texano's momentum. Boo-Yay punch exchange which Texano puts a stop to with a kick to the knee but El Patron ducks a charge from Texano and drops him with a series of clotheslines and a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. El Patron ducks another clothesline and lands a lungblower for a near fall.

Patron wants his signature kneeling superkick but Texano dodges and flattens Patron with a spinebuster. It's only good for two, however. Texano sets El Patron on the top turnbuckle and lays into him with forearms to the back, then cracks him in the back with a crisp kick. While the referee is busy checking on Patron, Texano takes a moment to remove the top turnbuckle padding on the other side of the ring. While the referee is occupied reattaching the pad, Texano wraps his bullrope around his fist and lays into El Patron with punches to the head.

Texano wants a superplex of his own but Patron fights back, knocking him down so that Texano is sitting on the second turnbuckle, allowing Patron to land the double stomp to the chest. Patron fires up and yanks off his shirt, signaling for the cross arm breaker. Texano reverses, however, and nails a sit-out powerbomb for two.

El Patron surprises Texano with a codebreaker to the arm, then nails the kneeling superkick, but only gets two. Texano grabs the bullrope and wraps it around his fist. El Patron ducks a punch, however, and hits a tornado DDT. He then spies the bullrope lying in the ring and uses it to whip Texano, drawing a disqualification. The crowd is hot, however, urging El Patron to continue whipping his rival, so he hits him a dozen or so times.

King Cuerno is sitting in Dario Cueto's office, wearing his mask and a full cowboy costume, complete with hat. Cueto informs him that Johnny Mundo is tired of being jumped from behind, so Cueto has granted him a steel cage match next week. Cuerno says that Mundo should be careful what he wishes for, as he's going to defeat him and then mount his head on Cueto's wall.

Thoughts: Nothing outstanding this week, but a solid show throughout. Two very good matches and the "comedy" match was done well. Cuerno vs Mundo in a cage is the exact opposite of what I was expecting but it should be interesting. What the hell happened to Black Lotus, though? I'm all for focusing on different storylines each episode, but a woman being tied up in a trunk isn't the sort of thing you can just wait around for.

Edit: Accidentally hit submit too soon.

That Konnan video almost guarantees that we'll see him in a match at some point. I kinda understand the hate he gets, but I have enjoyed him ever sense he first popped up in WCW. I wished he didn't join the NWO, cause he was having some pretty great matches before all that happened.

I really enjoyed the Alberto match and thought they did a great job at making it feel like an important match. I've missed Alberto.

All in all, a slight let down from last weeks fantastic show, nut still better than the last WWE stuff I watched by a mile.

If you do, it's going to be something along the lines of the Bret Hart/Vince McMahon WrestleMania match. Wouldn't quite fit on that show.

What if all of Mexico shows up to take out Chavo Guerrero, only to find out he already left, so Konnan asks them to kick Cage's ass while they're there?

It's odd that Alberto and his nemesis show up and bump the other LU stories aside for the main event. Certainly Alberto has the stature to be in the upper card immediately, but part of the appeal of LU is that anyone can have that spot for a week. Sexy Star, Pentagon, Son of Havoc -- it's not just Mundo and Puma and Cage. The movement between angles makes that delineation of lower and higher card stories less distinct.

But as Striker said at the start of the match, this main event isn't the usual LU bout. It's much less aerial, much slower. This was like an exhibition match to highlight another style. Usually a lucha match would play this part -- a special attraction -- in a standard wrestling card.

I'd rather we see Alberto or Texano work their way through the LU regulars before getting to each other to make this match mean something. Despite LU's usually great angle sells, it doesn't grab me, partially because it's not the style LU offers.

I don't disagree that it would be nice to see them force the big name to work his way up, but storyline wise Dario Cueto has confessed to being a great admirer of Albert El Patron, so not unwilling to give him special treatment. He did try to start Patron off with a jobber squash, so at least it's being publicly acknowledged that he's getting special treatment. And I wouldn't be surprised if someone didn't take offense to Patron going straight to the main event and didn't turn it into a storyline in the next episode or two. And it was repeatedly stated that the match up was an on going feud that was a huge deal in Mexico. Cueto has stressed time and time again that his main interest is in seeing competition, so overall, I don't think it's too far out of line.

Honestly, it looks to me like all four finalists might make the WWE in some capacity. Then throw in Matt, who already got a developmental deal... Well, anyway, my picks are Jake and Jackie. However, Kenny will also make it; he just won't win TE2.
