I wouldn't know if mentioning that Rayo de Jalisco and Canek are among the stars would be a good thing, but boy, this is a very welcome addition to my Saturday afternoons.

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Wrestling/2004/08/28/606874.html

Canadian fans finally have a weekly option on TV other than the WWE, but it's not TNA. It's CMLL, Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, which will begin airing on TLN on September 10th.

The Spanish-language wrestling show will air every week at midnight on Fridays and 4:30 pm Saturday afternoons (all times Eastern). TLN is seen on 3. 7 million Canadian television sets, and available through both Bell ExpressVu and StarChoice, and airs programming in Italian, Spanish and English.

The article is good for

- SLAM - or at least Greg Oliver - being unwilling to write an article about anything without taking multiple shots at the WWE

- the bit about having run a show in Chicago. Either they mean sometime in the not recent past or they did a CMLL show recently, no one told me, and thus, someone must die. (or maybe OMLL?)

It sounds like they're going to be on the same schedule as Galavision to start with (I'll save the minuate proof for the blog if you just believe me on this), but this could help out US people as well: If TLN can pressure Televisa for newer episodes, maybe Galavision can also air them.

Perhaps it sets up a match between Que Monito and the bear from the Labatts commercials, assuming they use that ad campaign domestically in addition to the US. And might Monito be a better spokesperson for Labatts since he is, in fact, blue?

I think the "Chicago" reference was towards the AAA Triplemania show that was held in Chicago back in 1996. They reference the Portland show, and the only lucha I can think of from Portland was the AAA/CWUSA card from 1994, which was notable for Tonya Harding as a manager, and for Col. Debeers and Psicosis being on the same trios team.

I would think they'd reference the Juster lucha shows in Atlanta if they wanted a more recent example.

I'm just giddy about the even the slightest of the slight chance of seeing Porky dance in person.

Greg is actually a solid supporter of WWE. I counted one statement that you're probably confusing to be a "shot" at the WWE. He says that WWE doesn't go out of its way to follow history in its storylines as much as it could? How is that a shot? That's stating a FACT. In the grand scheme of storylines, continuity has been a problem with WWE's product for years now. Only recently has the WWE been slightly following up on rivalries (like Rock vs Coach/La Rez, for example). I think you're taking more of a shot at Greg Oliver than he is at WWE, no?
I agree with the article. CMLL should be a good alternative. Nothing wrong with there being more options for wrestling fans. And I think that's the point being made here. I can't wait to see the likes of Hector Garza, Super Crazy, and Dr. Wagner!

Homer: I'm guessing the Portland show was the one Bryan Alvarez wrestled the Villanos on? Which wasn't really a CMLL show either.

Chill: One instead of two, sorry. Maybe I'm getting a small sample size, but it seems like I've read him make similiar comments in the past.

Masks abound, the rules are different than those in the WWE and history and heritage are key elements of storylines (again, something the WWE never worries about).

To me, the unnecssary parenthetical is the writer sticking out tounge at the WWE for no particular reason. But who cares, I'll agree that it's besides the point.

Reading the article again - Canek is a big US Star? Is this a magazine thing?

I'm certainly going to watch it. It used play on this network about a decade ago, my most lasting memory is seeing Perro Aguayo as he's selling pain during a tag match. Not even pain-cry it was full out baby cry he was doing outside the ring selling a injured arm. Now that's SELLING, most in the E don't even sell a yell pain this guy sold it by sobbing lol... I also remember that during the show they have normal cuts to fans. But I remember them showing the same fan doing the same reaction 2 or 3 times a show (ie get up, point angry, shakes head, sits down, looks to the left, back to action). Don't know if that's the local station who did it or is that the norm watching production from Mexico.

smark/net attack wienerville advisory is raised to ORANGE alert - High (Benoit lost the title to some punk kid named Orton, lets look at the positive at least it's a heel not named HHH who has the title, which allows two fresh faces battling for the World title.. whaat? excuse me? what happened on Raw! well scratch that... Over to Smackdown we wave at Justin Bradshaws title reign, I think I'm getting sea sick)- 8/22

I get like over a hundred worthless channels on my digital cable package yet TLN is in a different package, which has nothing else I would pay for. Damn.

Does anyone know where we could find out which specific show will be shown first? I'm curious what matches we'll see.

And Cubsfan, I understand what you mean. He has said things to that effect before, but yeah, in the grand scheme of things, he's very supportive. His Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Canadians book is extremely well-documented and credits WWE for its part in making certain Canadian stars, but even better, he's writing a HOF book on tag teams (the best of all-time). Anyhoo...

When they used to air it in Canada, we were generally one week behind lucha airdates from Galavision.

So, cross-referencing with cubsfan's lucha times, it might be the show with a main event of Ultimo Guerrero & Rey Bucanero vs. Atlantis & Blue Panther.

Well, RVD would probably be in a different situation if he hadn't gone and gotten himself arrested, and Punk is still pretty new--if he doesn't get the belt somewhere not-too-far down the road with more buildup, THEN there's a complaint there.
