I have recently discovered CMLL Lucha Libre on my local cable and really dig it. No stupid skits, no backstage garbage. Lots of ring action, colorful masks, and insane aerial moves. I do have one question though. Any American wrestling character that is effeminate, or appears to be gay is automatically a heel- eliciting ugly chants and boos. In CMLL there is a babyface named Maximo who is essentially a gay gladiator type character. He is an excellent worker. He is also the most mincing, effeminate nancy boy in the world, and he is wildly cheered by the Mexican fans. Are They more tolerant in Mexico, or is Maximo a special case. Like I said, the little dude can work.

Give it some time!

Men working effiminte ("exotico") gimmicks has been a staple of Mexican wrestling for years, so they are more used to it seeing in the ring.

However, there really hasn't been an exotico in CMLL in some time (they're more a staple of AAA and indy promotions), so Maximo's doing something they know, but maybe haven't seen in a while. Mostly, they cheer him because he's a good guy and he's awesome being Maximo, and that's all that matters.

Let's not forget that Rico worked babyface and gay quite effectively for the last couple of months before the WWE cut him loose. It's weird how they never made any kind of a big deal about it, even though it was the first time a gay babyface character had ever been done in US wrestling as far as I know. (I mean, Goldust has been babyface, but he's less "mincing nancy boy" and more "just weird".) Rico was demonstrating how all of the usual homophobia-baiting comedy spots work just as well (better, I'd say), when used against a heel. And then, for no good reason, he was gone...

I think the only Lucha Libre I saw on telemundo was mostly masked fat men backchopping each other and then MIDGETS! that might have been on Galavision though.

But yeah, what channel did u see this on?

CMLL is (usually) on Saturday mornings/afternoons on Galavision.

CMLL is on cable-only stations Galavision (Saturday and Sunday afternoon weekends) and CAN52MX (603/652 on some Comcast digital systems and pretty much nowhere else - mid Sat/Sun morning and Saturday night there; This is the show the workrate reports are refering to, and I keep track of all the times and matches at one of those links on the bottom of this post.) There's a rumor that lucha appears on Azteca America, but I've never seen it.

There have been a ton of mincing gay faces in American Wrestling. Adrian Street was minicng around Georgia and Alabama as face in the early 80s.

So, my brother's been filling me in on the three faction war going on in CMLL. (He's marking out big every Saturday, and I'm missing out! But I digress)

There's the Technicos led by El Hijo del Santo and Mistico and Ultimo Dragon, and then you have the Guerreros Del Infierno (although Atlantis just turned, so their group name changed), and there's also a group with Damien 666 and Halloween.

Can you help me fill in some holes? Who's in which group, and what the hell was Muta doing there?

Also, if you could measure this in a scope versus American wrestling, how big was Atlantis' turn?

Thanks in advance!

Really? I had no idea Street worked that gimmick as a face. Cool. I stand corrected.

The Galavision show is six months behind what's happening in Mexico, so the Muta stuff (just a cameo - like Liger in TNA) won't be airing till next Thanksgiving. The stuff your brothers is seeing is stuff that happened last Thanksgiving

Lucha libre traditionally has rudos (bad guys) and tecnicos (good guys); all the bad guys get along and all the good guys get along. In recent CMLL, they've been doing a number of running feuds where factions of rudos no longer get along and fight each other - but then they still fight the tecnicos, the same as usual.

One of the rudo factions is a 'cool' group of outsiders, comparble to the nWo (though they're not trying to 'take over' or anything like that.) The group, Perros del Mal (the Dogs of Evil) is named after the leader, Perro Aguayo Jr. The other current* members are Hector Garza, Mr. Aguila (Essa Rios), Damian and Halloween.

The main rudo opposition to them are what's now called Guerreros de Atlantida, named after newest member Atlantis. Atlantis is important to the group, but the leader is Ultimo Guerrero. ("Guerrero" means Warrior in Spanish; the connection to Eddie's family is concidental.) Other members are Rey Bucanero, Olimpico and Tarzan Boy; Tarzan had membership in both groups for a while, and that was a subplot of the fued.

There are many other rudos who are with the Guerreros; they've got their own B-Team called the Guerrero Pandilla and the Dinamita Brothers have long running rivarly with Aguayo family.

There aren't really any factions within the tecnicos; they're all on the same page (unless they're turning to the rudo side.) Mistico is probably the top guy in the company, and he's joined by Dr. Wagner Jr., the Casas family (Negro Casas, Heavy Metal, Felino), Dos Caras Jr. and the former La Parka (LA Park*) among others. Santo's not around that much.

* - what's airing on Galavision TV; there's another, more current show, but it seems like only five of us get it.

Some DVD dealers sell CMLL and AAA stuff, places like www.slambamjam.com

As for more recent Lucha, the CMLL show Cubs mentioned earlier, Guerreros Del Ring, airs on the CANAL52MX station on Comcast cable. It's one hour a week and the footage is only a week old as opposed to six months old on Galavision. If you don't get Canal52, just be happy you live in America and get Lucha on free TV you jerks. All I get is free health care!

Not sure If I'm reading what Cubs wrote incorrectly or not, but Galavision is on DirecTV (channel 404). that's where I first starting watching it back in 99.

For some reason, this past Saturday Galavision showed AAA instead of CMLL in the afternoon timeslot. Didn't like it as well. Six sided ring, talent seemed inferior. However, I thought Maximo was effeminate till I saw "Pimpernela Escarlata" and "Cassandro". LOL Full drag with female tights, make up, the whole bit. One was a rudo and one a technico. I laughed till I cried, these dudes really vamped it up. We need more maked men in Norte American Wrstling.
