Now if he can just keep quiet for a few months, this whole thing might blow over. Don't seem likely though, does it?

I never saw anyone get railroaded so bad, in so short a time. The Democrats must be patting themselves and their liberal media friends on the back right this very minute.

It would be far better for the Democrats to have a guy as majority leader who's

a) a political liability and
b) not the President's handpicked guy

You can thank Jr. for this "railroading." He saw an opportunity to get his guy (Bill Frist) in the Majority leader position, and he took it. He's the guy that hung Lott out to dry. Now he has one less obsticle to his agenda. Jr. is not a guy who likes to deal with people that aren't part of his crowd, regardless of ideology.

If only the "media" were actaully as liberal and as powerful as you guys like to pretend. We'd have a lot better government.

See I don't have a problem seeing this as partially the media's fault. Liberals are just idiotic enough to shoot themselves in the foot. "Let's get that conservative stalwart Lott! Hang him out to dry! News coverage all the time, get those racist Republicans! Oops, wait a minute maybe its better if he stays...oh crap they're kicking him out. SON OF A B*ITCH they're putting in a pro-life, beloved conservative Senator/medical doctor as majority leader!" I say the Republicans beat the Dems at their own game here. Frist is a solid guy and I think will be a lot more powerful a leader than Lott.

Yeah, the Democrats let this one blow up on him. I mean, the time to openly come out and publicly "forgive him" was like 2 days ago. For crying out loud, the guy promised to support half of the Democratic issues! Hell, he came out in support of Affirmitive Action!! (well, the Democrats claim he is a racist, and A.A. IS a racist policy, so that is not much of a stretch). It got to the point where I was glad he quit before he completely undermined everything a "Republican" is supposed to support. Now, instead of a weakened leader who "owes" the Democrats, and has promised them the moon, they have a strong, untarnished guy handpicked by Bush.
Yeah, the Demos dropped the ball on this one. It did not blow up as bad as the Wellstone Memorial, but it is just another example of how the Democrats are either really lacking a leader, or really need to get some better political strategists....

Yeah, 'cause Lott probably would've stood by all of his promises to support affirmative action, subscribe to Ebony Magazine, find out who shot Tupac, etc.

Why can't you just admit that your guy fucked up? Because he did and he's paying the price. It wasn't the "liberal media," or Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton who opened Lott's mouth and made him say that dumbassed stuff.

Good riddance, I say.

I find it hilarious how once the feeding frenzy started, everyone went to their normal roles: the Dems demanded he step down while the GOP kept their mouths shut hoping it owuld blow over.

But once everyone began to realize that Lott stepping down would be beneficial for the GOP, then they were the ones forcing Lott to resign, while the Dems did an about face right after muttering a collective "Aw Shit!".

Ah politics. If only the WWE could create something this comical. . . . .

I know the guy made a mistake, but I do not think it was nearly as sinful as what the Democrats and the press were making it out to be. It was bad because it was a dumb, ill-advised, unthought-out comment that was in all likelihood intended to mean something much less political. The guy was trying to be nice, though in a seriously stupid way.
NO, I do not think the guy should have stepped down because of the pressure. I DO think he should have stepped down because unlike a real leader, he was ready to hand over his whole ideology to the Democrats, and cave to everything. You BET he would have stood by his promises to the Demos, because that would have been the only thing that would keep him alive. And, if he had gone back on them, the press and the Demos would have been all over him to the point that it would rip anything the Republicans could have done in the next two years to shreds. The Republicans would have lost all credibility, right up to Bush.
I merely pointed out that for a while, the Democrats were playing a very good game of politics with this. They had it blown WAY out of porportion, the media was hyped and the whole Republican party was having a huge red "R" branded on their forehead. But they took it too far, and instead of having the Republican majority leader (who they played for a sap so welll in the last two weeks) in their pocket, they now have squat, and egg on their face.
I am glad Lott resigned because he is an utter moron who was incapable of defending himself when the heat was on. If he can't even do that, as a leader, how is he supposed to step up for the Republicans in the Senate?

I'll "eat shit and like it" when the Dems stop being hypocrites. Yes...what Lott said was stupid, plain and simple. The mouth moved before the brain thought.

Now...let's put Senator Byrd's feet to the fire too, for all the "white nigger" comments he's been throwing around recently.

In my own opinion, Lott's comments were repulsive, but so were the 16 different sycophantic apologies that he felt compelled to make. It should have been a easy to honestly say..."I was just trying to honor a Senator on his 100th birthday, a landmark achievement for anyone. I am sorry if my comments were taken otherwise, they weren't intended so."

Instead we got..."I've done good things for blacks." and "Some of my best friends are black." I exaggerate...but not by much. The apologies were poorly done, a case of stupidity following more stupidity. But it should not have had to go that far.

But remember that Affirmative Action is ok because bigotry and racism against white guys rules.
