The final season of LOST came out on DVD today - and includes the long-hyped eleven minute epilogue The New Man In Charge. It's really little more than exposition, but it provides an absolute ton of definitive answers to a lot of questions I had long given up hope of ever getting answers to - plus it's got a fair amount of Michael Emerson being quietly awesome, who even at one point says he's "there to tie up a few loose ends".

Among those answered questions:

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
*Where the Dharma food drops came from/why they still were happening
*Not necessarily what MADE Walt special, but a pretty solid indication that he's the NEXT next Jacob
*Why Pierre Chang used a series of aliases
*The initial purpose of Room 23
*The fucking polar bears so please shut up about them also Big Bossman raised the fucking briefcase
*The Hurley bird?! No shit.

It's pretty expository and it only features four cast members/recurring characters, but it's completely worth watching and maybe my favorite DVD special feature ever.

After seeing it, it's easy to see why it wasn't included

- there's no point where it would've fit in the finale
- if they tacked in after the finale, it would've felt like they were opening the door to more episodes. The last season of the actual show was an ending, this was more about the adventure continuing.

If you're looking for a different spin on the ending or on the main plot, this is something you can skip. If you were obsessive about the details and would enjoy seeing some loose ends tied up, it's worth seeking out (in one way or another.) It as neat but nonessential as promised.

I'd been waiting to see it and it was cute.

So far, the best extra might be the season ending Doc, including James Burrows and Shawn Ryan talking about ending long-running series.

I was shocked to see that Season 6 on BluRay is already available via NetFlix, but in the disc breakdown, I see no mention of the epilogue ... Is there a separate disc featuring the bonus content (and Disney is personally having NetFlix hold it back to force people to purchase the entire set rather than rent it), or is it "mixed in" with one of the other discs?

It's on disc 5 - the same disc as the finale episode.

This has been online for about two weeks, and that's how I saw it.

I liked seeing those three characters, especially the last one to appear. I thought it was a fine extra for longtime fans.

Just watched it. Thoughts:

Liked the continued gag of each Dharma film being presented in a different format. Is Ben running around with the season 5 dvd set?

Liked Ben sharing a candy bar with Walt. Cute callback to his moment with Hurley while Locke was in the cabin.

So the polar bears WERE for the Orchid station. Felt like this mostly confirmed theories that were posited from the information available on the show as opposed to givinng answers that were never addressed. I will admit it was nice to get confirmation on the pregnancy issues.

The dialog between Ben and the Dharma dudes was a bit too overtly meta (we want answers... we need to watch that again...) for my taste.

NITPICK: Was the Lamppost still paying those guys salaries as well, or were they volunteers?

NITPICK: Walt seemed like he was doing fairly well when Locke visited him. How did he wind up thinking he was crazy and going to Santa Rosa?

Meh. It was a cute epilogue, but none of this matters anymore. How long until we get a comic book about Ben, Walt, and Hurley on the island?

You believe me, don't you?
Please believe what I just said...

I dind't like it. For me, the most frustrating questions weren't Dharma stuff or what happened to certain characters, it was "what the hell is the island all about?" Why can't people get pregnant? Why are the kids born there special? Why does it heal people? What is up with Ben/Sayid coming back from the dead, and how does that change people? What is the light all about - why can certain people find it? How the hell do you just suddenly get super-magic godlike powers? Why are there dead spirits running around? How does it move through time? All of that stuff. I would have liked a bit more on that front.

But they said ...

The unique electromagnetic properties of the island caused complications during early gestation in the animals ... which would include humans.

I'm not real happy that they decided to end things on a "cliffhanger" ... I mean, someone speculated that Walt was being recruited to be the NEXT next Jacob, but I'm not so sure; it seemed more like it was going to be his job to contact all of the dead people/whispers of the island and try to help them find peace (I guess Miles was unavailable). But I guess he didn't do such a good job of that, anyway, since the final scene in the final episode included neither Walt nor his father (tough break, kid).

Maybe they just "less not ready" to move on, even more so than Ben.

Still, they should have made the church scene.

Anyone else watch it? I tuned in for Ian McShane and he didn't disappoint (though obviously, as an NBC show, there's a total absence of him calling people "cocksuckers.")
