Here's another (lostpedia.com) brightened and annotated version of the map. Sometimes I just have to wonder how much of this stuff can be taken at face value as genuine clues and how much is just the writers/producers throwing us curveballs.

It amazes me how many times I've seen "hic sunt dracones" translated as "there are dragons here" or "here are dragons." The correct translation probably should be "here be dragons," which was (apparently apocryphally) standard nomenclature in medieval cartography for "this is the edge of the world."
